Title: 1983 Minigoose narrow pro-class rims - help required!
Post by: Spen69 on November 06, 2007, 06:50 PM
OK, offering myslef up for a fall here, but just bought a Minigoose over the pond from the USA which came with a few odds and sods, including a pair of Pro-class rims.

As I still have my '83 Cali, I notice they are a different size and am assuming they must be either 1-1/8" or 1-3/8" not regular 1.75" rims. The outside diameter is different, so here are my questions:

1 - obviously regular 20x1.5 or 20x1.75 or 20x2.125 tyres don't fit, but do both 20x1-1/8" and 20x1-3/8" tyres fit?

2 - if so, can I put the 1/8th on the back and a 3/8th on the front like we used to ride our 2.125 and 1.75's BITD?

3 - where can I get these tyres from, preferably black gum-walled Compe 3 style?

4 - do I need special inner tubes, if so, where form?

5 - do I need special brakes to fit them, as they are effectively a different diameter?

6 - finally, what length spokes do I need for low flange Suzue hubs to fit these?

Sorry about the numpty questions, but I've never seen a pair before and they will look amazing when I get them built up again  :coolsmiley:

Help me if you can please!

Spencer

I think you can run a 1 3/8 on a 1 1/8 but not vice versa so all depends on what size they are.  You can get 1 1/8- 1 3/8 toobs and I have black tioga comp 3's in both sizes but keep it lit has dib dobs on one set depending on what size rims he fit's on his mini.  Short reach calipers like the weinmann type 500 or shimano ones work good.    Spoke lengths on here near the bottom http://www.bikewebsite.com/spokes.htm

I think 192 for the spoke length but they are pretty hard to get hold of if you have a look on alans website he does them and he was doing a special on tyres as well last time I looked , you also need shorter calipers they are more like the old road bike size not sure what size they are though.

Yep a 1 1/8 Rim will take both a 1 1/8 Tyre and a 1 3/8 Tyre.

Inner tubes in this size are usually available on ebay even with Schraeder Valves.

If people are struggling on spokes there is a guy in the us who does custom lengths up to and beyond 200mm  work out about the same as UK prices if you don't mind the wait and he also does ti ones  :daumenhoch:

Wow!

Cheers guys - this website is such a wealth of knowledge - I feel such a muppet!  :idiot2:

Bodamus - you told me to check Alan's and i forgot - sorry man. As for the caliper, I need to find a pair I think, so I'll have a look on the bay unless you have two?

Sawzall - that mini is awesome! Love the detail in the wheels - where did you end up getting the spokes made then, as I'm not looking forward to the blank expression on my local shop owner's face when I take them in....  :-\

Looks like I need to take the 1-1/8th Compe 3 I found gathering dust in a shop the other day back then, as these badboy Pro-class rims appear to be 1-3/8th's than...... doh!

Cheers again

Just finished building a pair of Ukai's 1 3/8 rims on large flange hubs and used 195mm spokes but i think you have to use
218mm on a small flange hub and lace 3 cross.

Also i can get comp 3's 1 3/8 in blue and possibly red

PM if interested
