Title: A few from the 80's
Post by: southern andy on December 09, 2007, 03:22 PM
Hi chaps, after finding this site, i thought i would have a dig around for some photos.

Below is my first race bike, 1984 i think. Its a Diamond Back Senior pro bought from Strongs cycles in Bournemouth.  The photos were taken at a meeting at Wimborne track.

The next few are from 1986, a meeting at Poole BMX track, very famous for a while for it's start straight doubles until they decided to revamp them and make them mush smaller.

My bike then was a GJS race bike, very rare at the time, it was also fitted with Redline flight cranks, cant remember if they were 400 or 401's ????. Perhaps someone could tell me. I also wore Jag pants for some reason.

The next photo is of Gary Llewellyn of Mongoose. I raced against his brother Wayne that day in my three moto's and he absolutely whipped my ass.
Here Gary is jumping the Poole doubles, hell of a distance they were. This is either the second or third moto cause he fell off on them in the first one. He and his brother were the only people i ever saw jump them.

I hope you like these.
It breaks my heart now that i sold all my gear in the 89/90 years to fund buying a house, BMXing by then had pretty much ceased really, but one things for sure, i always looked forward to Sundays and race day.
Cheers guys.

Nice, i remember that shirt so well. My mate's mum was the race secretary or something like that. My mate was Benny Metcalfe, cant remember his mums name, i know she still lives in Totton near me.

Still got scars on me from that track, loved the table top, it ended up being Tarmac aswell if i remember correctly. I learned to drive there at the education centre.

Lordshill track, god that was long, one of the longest i ever rode. :D

i remember ben andy last time i saw him he was at the canute rock club near ocean village and had massive hair,i think his mum was myra ??? and he had a sister who i think was called nicole but it was 24 years ago so the memory's not what it used to be,i have a few nice scars from the track too,the surface was really rough apart from the tarmac on the jumps, it liked to remove your skin if you fell off

I raced in the same region as you, but one age group up.  I live in Bristol and raced all over doing regionals and nationals.

Here are some pictures of me:

Ha Ha, Quality but for some reason whenever i raced at Poole i seemed to always wish i lived there. God knows why. Probably something to do with living right next to the track.

Hi Kev, I live in Totton near Southampton. I'm now 37 but very soon will be 38.  :-(

At the moment i'm sort of Mountain biking with my son in the New Forest most weekends, although i have managed to get hold of two BMX's to do up although i wouldn't know where to start really. One is a Huffy i think, no stickers to actually say but a lot of the parts have Huffy on them, the other is a late 90's early 2000 Ruption (very heavy).

Riding again wise, i would love to but i wouldn't know where to start to be honest with you.

Get yourself down Bournemouth track is in same place but
different layout, go oldschool to get back into it, then if you
get hooked go with a Cruiser you would be in the 30-39
age group, check BMX TALK for a decent 2nd hand ride,
beware its addictive and expensive. Trackwise in the
South there is only B/mouth Andover Hayes Dagenham
and Gosport when we get up and running pm me if you
want to know any more. Kev.

Would love that mate, could be distressing for you though seeing a grown man cry. My brother in law works in Ch'ford.

I've just been on Ebay looking for some sort of old school thing to do up, has to be a race bike rather than a freestyler, what a load of crap on there, the likes of GT, Haro and diamond back seem to make tons of them now for what seems like pennies, not like what it used to be back in the old day. These bikes aswell just dont look like some of the fantastic looking bikes in the museum. They dont seem to make them like they used to do they.

Finding this forum has certainly unearthed a huge tub of worms, can see me doing my best in the new year in trying to find an decent bike from the 80's.

EDIT>>>>>> Kev, will certainly PM you when i have got some things sorted, quite fancy a summer series at Bournemouth.  Also what is  BMX Talk, i'm assuming its a magazine like the old Bi-weekly ??

the guy on the MRD 3rd pic down looks like Darren Collins, he used to be a petersfield BMX club member like me and Kev, a few years older than me , but not as old as Kev!

All good old SC tracks I remember well myself, being another old SC rider.

Kev; you going to Andover for gates tomorrow? I have a new recruit coming along. Its Nik the guy I took to Hayes, who now has a brand new MCS Cruiser. Looks like 40+ is getting bigger in the South Region this coming summer. Have another one also who has ordered and is waiting for his Floval to turn up early Jan.

Went over to my mums last night and dug out a photo album or two, you'll have to excuse the shapes as she has cut around the photo to add more of them to a page.
A few more for you browse through here, you may even recognise a few plate numbers.

Below is me on my Diamond Back, sorry i cant remember the track at all.

These next ones are from Poole track in my first years of racing, about 84.

The next few are of my Brother Darren, He was 3 yrs below me. He was born in 1973. His race bikes were a Kuwahara lazerlite and a SRE. These bikes (SRE) seem to be quite rare now, as i dont seem to see any around on this forum ???

Again my Bro, this time at Bournemouth.

As i said, please excuse the prints as they have been scanned from an photo album and not individual prints.
