Title: WHAT IS THIS? IS THIS GENUINE?
Post by: Swivel on January 16, 2008, 12:18 PM
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200190704255&_trksid=p3907.m32&_trkparms=tab%3DWatching (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200190704255&_trksid=p3907.m32&_trkparms=tab%3DWatching)

Looks like a Master that's been stickered up like a Gen 1, but at the same time the drop outs are different and the serial isn't situated in the same place as the Gen 1's i.e. on the drop out. The serial is this: YF40802399

I requested some more photos from the guy that's selling it and he sent some over to me. It really looks like a gen 1 but at the same time his saying its 1985? Makes no sense to me, so what do you guys reckon?

It's a copy....

Copy frame!?  Ok, I thought it maybe the case as I didn't see any brake/coaster jobber on the back. Getting quite high bids for a copy then...  ???

there was a pukka copy on here about 2 yr ago and it went for top money

I love the way he's taken  pictures from every angle apart from the ones you need to make a positive id. The geezer obviously knows what he's selling.

Yeah I thought that. I asked for a photo of the whole frame from the side and he wouldn't send it, so that says it all really. Lots of bids on this already though surprisingly ....

The headtube isn't machined either. Those pics could trick some people though. Still a cool frame, whatever it is.

Noticed that too...
But the non machined headtube says all !

I've got a really nice copy one here....seat tube is longer than it should be (but easy to cut down) and the chainstays meet the BB in a different place.

Would fool a lot of people though.

*edit* Here's a pic - with the seatpost shortened slightly how would you know...even has the machined headtube and coaster tab.

What a con.  Someone should've reported it as he is selling it as a genuine Haro freestyler frame.

just hope no one gets stung and knows what they are buying ,i guess the forks are worth a good bit ,It does look nice, but wouldn't go over £200 myself.

Didn't really read the info on it ,it does say its genuine,Reported, HARO :police: see what happens.
I'm pretty certain that F+F's was for sale a while back ......

Probably a waste of time though , as the auction is about to end...........

So are the Skyway TUFT that he is selling!

He so knows the bars and f+f are not correct! I reckon he is advertising the parts incorrectly so that if it does come on top he can plead ignorance! That way he can get away with getting top money for bits that may trick 'jo average'.

It's nicely welded too....not quite as neat around the gusset but not how it looks in the photo - it's just very shiney and reflecting the light.

Jesus, reading this is frightening, I'm trying hard to get myself an 80's race bike and i'm looking on Ebay all the time. Despite this being a Freestyler i would have had a serious think about it.

I've been out of the sport for twenty years and can only go by what people post about what their selling and i have to take it as gospel.
It also goes to prove that a lot of the guys oh here know their stuff and their are some right dodgy characters around.

Cheers guys.

To be honest Munners, i've done nothing other than read since i've been a member here. I have had some excellent advice from a fair few people, especially on flight cranks.

But when i look at all the bikes in the museum, i'm just blown away by them all and i end up a jibbering wreck. Its getting to a point now where i'm that desperate to rewind my life twenty years that i just want to buy something as soon as possible.

Its a slow process, i'll get there and hopefully i wont get stitched up. How you guys have done it i'll never know.

I just sold a much better Gen1 copy to someone on here for more than 4 times less than that last week (machined head, coaster tab etc)....
I spotted that listing when it was first listed, the forks are worth more than the frame! (at least they look like genuine haro forks)

Hope the buyer doesnt pay up!

I'll let you know what he say's. But in the meantime...does anybody want to buy a Haro Freestyler?????? Cheers again. Jim (£300 down today)

It's a shame that the seller chose to make the bids anonomyous.  You can't warn anyone until it's all over.

I'm sure you can put in a paypal claim anyway if the seller doesn't play ball.  After all if it is a fake, they should be no problem getting your money back.

Welcome Jim, shame you didn't come on here sooner mate... I posted up the thread as I was wary after the guy sent me some pictures but nothing which could be identified as a real Gen 1, just bits and pieces to fool people into thinking it was a real one... sorry to hear that you've paid up, that guy needs a good kick in  :knuppel2:

Best of luck with getting your money back though mate and keep us posted  ;)

I sent him a message via ebay and he got that okay. I think they don't always go through if you put an email or website address on it. I just told him what was being said on RADBMX and he should register on here and take a look.

Hi all,
Thanks for the support yesterday, I thought I'd got the bike I always wanted, but nevermind!
Anyway, day 2 of the Haro Freestyler (copy, fake, rip-off) story, and I have had a reply which I would like anybody who know's Haro bikes to clarify for me if possible.
The serial number has been written incorrectly on Ebay, it is actually YF 840802399. Does this match any Haro frames, let me know if you can.

Thanks again.
Jim

The reply to me...

hi jim, ive spoken to my friend who i was selling this frame for and he assures me that this frame is original. its an 1985 frame with 82-83 decals, and the
serial no is on the bottom bracket because it wasnt made at the torker factory being an 85.

Tell him Haro didn't make a bike in the 80's that didn't have a coaster tab. There are plenty of 85 Haro's in the museum and they are nothing like that. 85's have the flattened 'L shaped' dropouts at the rear.

The guy is talking bollox. i wonder who his friend is that seems to know so much?

82 Freestyler ....

'84 Master, Note the gusset behind the bottom bracket and the front gussett welded all the way around this was the same on all models after the original 82...

Not how all three variants have the machined headtube, ie flaired at top and bottom?. Your copy does not.
