I managed to put the cranks on without the tool but do I need it to take them off. If so where can I get one from.

i use a socket and bar to remove mine

big hammer, and bolt wot screws into spindle.... sandro ses this works, knocks it through the bearings...

If it were me I would just buy the tool, it makes it alot easier
Or be like me and have a good mate like Dingo who does it all for you

You can just bye a longer bolt than the standard one. just remove the crank arm bolt, fit the longer one, tighten it up & TAP it with a soft face hammer.
But for £14 I brought the correct tool, all it does is knock the spindle through.

I think you may have misunderstood something in the past. The bolt that screws into the spindle that I referred to is in fact the correct removal tool. It is just a beefy bolt which has a shoulder that sits on the end of the spindle, thus not putting stress on the threads.

that tool was wot i meant anyway...was just describing it as a big bolt...
