I raced a National at Peterborough one year(that loose dusty long assed track). There was a guy in the 17s(i think) who was riding a white Grifter with profile cranks etc. He smoked everyone on it. If i remeber right he told me it was a GT rear end he had cobbled onto a grifter front triangle... Maybe Geth raced him?
-
Maybe Gary Morgan?
-
It was definately Gary Morgan, I have a picture somewhere of the bike when it was in BMX Action Bike magazine.
-
I will have to blow the dust off my BMX mags and have a trawl through them... must have been 83 or 84... narrows the trawling down a bit
Thx guys :D
-
The picture is in BMX Action Bike, November 1984 page 11.
-
Yep... thats the bike...thx m8. :santa_afro:

love it!
"grifter forks are always a danger point"
aint that the truth, ruth
-
Great pics guys.... Those forks were made for snapping.
I could never understand any of my mates that bought a grifter over a BMX. :santa_rolleyes:
-
Perhaps because they were bigger & uglier
That goes for the bikes & the guys who bought them !
-
You must be psychic.... They were all chubby farmers boys with grifters and raleigh bombers... I was poor and used to have to blag them for a go.... i had a great time snapping their bikes :santa_evil:
-
just got it bigger-you can read it,, just about

lol nowt wrong with a grifter mine had a pirahna front wheel
and i still managed to jump the fence at rom on it
and could wheelie for ages too lol
altho the forks were cack
-
I remember putting Acorn Magnums on my grifter before I got my first BMX. The didn't last more than a week before they snapped.
-
You were lucky the wheel bearings held up long enough for you to snap them :LolLolLolLol:
-
I put a 5 speed chopper back wheel on mine and created a 10 speed grifter, then smoked everyone on it  sad thing is we smashed up the chopper and threw it in the river, bet it would have been worth a few quid aswell :santa_sad:
-

Do you still have this picture? I would love a copy if possible. He's just become world champ aged 47
-
.... still on his Grifter ... ? :D 8) ...how cool is that to hear that this guy is still smokin 'em :daumenhoch:
-
Yep, 45+ World Champion in NZ :daumenhoch:
-
Awesome!!! :daumenhoch:
-
What a great piece of home engineering. Good idea to cut and shut frames to get the required geometry. Why he stuck with those awful grifter forks is beyond me....
Good story that though, very good that it got documented at the time. :daumenhoch:
-
As I recall they r standard forks ;) But as I did bitd straightened out the rake using a vice and blocks of wood 2 make them straight :daumenhoch:
-
Cool story :daumenhoch:

funny thing is that it doesnt weigh a ton with all the bmx parts on it ,its only the grifter frame thats a bit of a porker ;D

Sick! im sure there was an english black guy used to race a grifter in the 80s too, if his names cropped up already i apologise, i cant remeber it. saw him in a mag years back.
