It's nice to see so many old school riders rolling round the parks again but who would you most like to see get back on a BMX and get some air. You can only choose one from the UK and one from the US.
Mike Dominguez and Craig Campbell for me. Although it would have to be Niel Ruffell if he was still with us, RIP.
Daz. :daumenhoch:

MY DAD

His Dad :daumenhoch:

Bills Dad :daumenhoch:

Sorry....forgot to mention, you can't choose Billy's Dad ::)

Oh for fcuks sake.......
Chris Young at Rom :daumenhoch:

Sorry....forgot to mention, you can't choose Billy's Dad ::)
;D ;D thank fook for that ;D :daumenhoch:
-
Don't think you're off the hook just yet big fella!! ;D
-
I must be lucky cos I see Billys dad back on a bike last year  Not quite the rad fooker I remember from rOm in 82 but still good to see :daumenhoch:
I would love to see Chris Young back in the saddle, I managed to get him to a couple of old school races last year, but I think he could be a real pleasure to watch if he came back properly!!!!
USA rider would have to be our own Dennis Dain !! The original rad dude and awesome racer :daumenhoch:
-
Neil if he was still with us for sure.
Gotta be Craig and Dominguez. Only because we can't choose SBD. :daumenhoch:
-
I'll throw Dave Curry into the ring too ;)

I thought Dave does still ride...

Probably as much as Craig and Dominguez!!!!! :LolLolLolLol: Maybe even less......
I'd like to see him riding on a regular basis y'know?

Yeah, I'd like to see him back at Charlton sometime. I missed his last visit...

:) Sorry if this causes offence, but those who just collect OS! Nothing wrong with that, but build up something not so rare/valuable and go and enjoy riding!
-
I ride a lot, just have not got a car so you don't see me.
-
I'd like to see Bob Haro back on a Gen 1, to recreate his NEC demo run. As for a UK rider, i'd say Chris Young
Stumpy.
-
stephen hawkins :D
-
Deffo Neil not as dialled as craig but just so exciting to watch, I remember the first time i saw him ride at bmx beat the crowd were taking the piss (He had NHS glasses) he kick turned and blasted a one footed table out of the QP they werent taking the piss after they saw that air. I think there was a photo in actionbike of him doing the same air, chrome ammaco with black tuffs. Legend! RIP

matt baines

Stephen Murray...all the (alive) others it seems could get back on their bikes anytime they wanted :(

But seriously, I've been watching a lot of the old Dominguez stuff lately and he was just nuts. 540 canyons at the Velodrome 4-5 feet out 20 years ago; the guy had serious balls and talent.

I'm a bit out of touch as to who IS and ISN'T riding now, so this is a hard question for me.
I'd like to see my mate Michael Reilly start again so I had someone to ride with!
If I think of some better answers, I'll post again.

I can watch that over and over again - it's awesome!
The scariest part is that first big air....how close to the edge of the pipe was he when he came in to land...I bet the old nipper twitched a bit when he looked down ;D
The 540 canyon (or transfer as it's now known, we came up with canyon first ffs) is insane for it's time, high, smooth, cool as you like!

Er..........Me! :tickedoff:
Then SBD.
No, seriously, Bob H and Mike D would be a treat. As well as a certain Mr Hassel, or does he still ride?
The "R" ;)
-
that mike d run is awesome....he must of been fit at the time too cos he is riding super fast and just keeps going and going.
Does keith treanor still ride? His bit in dirty deeds is still one of my fav bits of bmx video
-
TwoBobRob & Sean2000 :daumenhoch:
Cheers mate :daumenhoch: i'm welling up here! :'(
-
Jesus H Christ. That Dominguez video is nuts.
Not sure I ever saw him rode in person - memory like a seive lol. Was he at any of the Holeshots? Or the Carlisle Worlds?
-
Oh aye, to answer the OP, I've no idea... :LolLolLolLol:
I'd settle for a few of these dead folk just not being, well, deaded. Only started being interested in bmx again in the last few years and the number of riders who are no longer with us is bloody shocking.
-
From the UK this is a real old school blast but I'd like to see Andy Ruffell and Cav Strutt back on bikes, rode with them bitd originally at Harrow and then over at Hollow Ponds, Red Rec and Eastway. Both were instrumental in me getting my first BMX bike and both of them were way ahead of everyone else in terms of ability.
From the US, Bob Haro and Mike D, enough said there ;).

CRAIG CAMPBELL best UK freestyler of his era :4_17_5:
GREG HILL best World Pro racer of his era :4_17_5:
RON WILKERSON best Freestyler of his era :4_17_5:
( sorry this guy was soooooooooooooooo much better than Dominguez ,no contest !!!! Yes the Minguez had huge balls but didn't have the finesse and perfected style of The Wilko ) no back chats :yahoo_silent:
-
Sorry that was 3 :-[
But the Americans were one from each catergory
Freestyle and Racing ;)

Pah.....Wilkerson wasn't even in the same league as Mike D ::)
Don't get me wrong, Wilkerson was good but I think Dominguez raised the bar more, plus Wilkerson went left to right and we all know bummers go left to right :LolLolLolLol:
CC was class but Ruffell was radder!
If you hadn't have said no back chat I wouldn't have said owt ;)

Wilkerson was amazing. Dominguez was a much better ramp rider though. Wilkerson took it to the next level though. He was probably the first person to start doing technical deck tricks. Also Wilkerson was probably the best all round rider in the world until DMC came along.

Completely agree Trev, Wilkerson's pedal picker drop-ins still amaze me today - quality!

I used to try them on small ramps. Scary as fook. Wilkerson doing them on a 12ft halfpipe was just insane.
Do you also remember his Miami Hopper Backwards Drop Ins? Probably the sickest deck trick ever done in the 80's.
I remember Ron saying that he had to try and push the limits on those sort of tricks because there was a new batch of kids coming through that he couldn't keep up with on the airs. One of them was a young kid called Mat Hoffman (with two T's)

I do mate.....mad as f***......I remember him doing one at Holeshot. I think that was the first and only one I saw live, I remember him setting up and thinking, oh no, he's not, he is you know, wow!
As for pedal pickers, I couldn't even do them on the floor, not my specialist area! ::)

RW was a showman.
-
RW was a showman.
He was Steve but he had and still has some very dodgy facial hair :LolLolLolLol:
Somewhere Dominguez never dared to go ;)
-
I was amazed at the MD vid i never realised he went that high, he's got that powerful style like carlo just bootiful.
I would rather see MD any day of week but to be fair RW was better all round rider, Tons of lip tricks in his bag.
Poole 85/86 Ruff hops hopped right to the edge of the deck stalled on front wheel looked at the crowd and hopped in. Gnarly back then my friends. Only ever saw Andy and Neil ruff do ruff hops but never saw neil pull em (over the bars at slough national 85)
Your not jealous of his "hair" are you (sorry i can't talk)
-
Just recalled that when he did the ruff hops Sam Wood shouted "ANDY RUFFELL EAT YOUR HEART OUT"
-
I remember RW doing Ruff hops to a backwards drop in. Mental...
-
I heard that on that tour RW was asked to tone it down as EF was supposed to be the star of the show.
I remember watching RW doing the 1 hand no footers. That must have been about 1984.

I think John Povah was pulling those around 84/85 at the ramp at Bosie too, although it might have been 85/86 but close :daumenhoch:
-
good thread.
but Ron wilkerson is still riding..
There used to be a Vans skatepark near me before they closed it. . One night a bloke quietly turns up with his bike, gets on the halfpipe and blast a few large airs...
it was ron wilkerson. How cool is that?
I wasn't there that week :( I'd love to have met him.
-
What's a Ruff Hop?
-
I mentioned it in another post about RW still riding, that's what made me think about putting this post up. I was pretty sure he still was.
Sad to here about EF being such a whinger, I thought he was cooler that that Andy.
Daz. :daumenhoch:
-
What's a Ruff Hop?
Front hops on the platform. Basically a nose pick with front hops.
-
They called front hops Ruff Hops?
FFS................ ::)
-
I did a show with EF on the world tour in Nottingham  and, beleive it or not, was getting higher than him on the 1/4 pipes. ::) Now I was never particularly good in the air, but just so happens he was having an off day. It was ace. Remember the whole crowd chanting my name! :smitten: hahahaaa. awesome. that didnt happen very often though :'(
-
They called front hops Ruff Hops?
FFS................ ::)
was probably the most difficult platform trick at the time. andy ruffell first did this in 1985.
-
They called front hops Ruff Hops?
FFS................ ::)
Sounds confusing I know, but AR named the quater pipe trick "Ruff hops" i.e popping out onto front wheel doing front hops and dropping back in off front wheel basically a nose pick with hops, if he was doing front hops on the flat he called them front hops.
-
Whilst most of you know I have no time for him, I've got to say that one of the raddest things I've seen (especially considering the year) was Andy Ruffell front hopping all the way down the slope at Rom, over to the pool, onto the coping, and straight in. Ballsy as fcuk.
1983 probably.
-
i heard last year Mike D was riding some old school thing that Hoffman put together , apart from that its Colin Winkleman all the way ... Dead or not ..

Dont know why its took me so long to answer this one but.... I'd love it if Steve Laidlaw got back on a bike as it'd give me someone to ride vert with again ::)
-
awesome combi that, from times gone by...........
-
i rode with neil ruffell early 80's at what we called the queensway track and tatum park(quarter next to youth club in a park)etc...never knew he died til 2yrs ago.
:(
-
Glynn Lewis, Rode with him a couple of time bitd "Awesome 9ft Airs at the park in Gillingham Kent made to look easy"
-
I bet he's still got his DP lying around at home somewhere. He was still riding in the mid/late 90s, had a couple of sessions with him at Rom and Leigh on Sea.
No idea what he's doing now though.
-
I wanna see the big man above get back on his bike! :daumenhoch:
but not before the doc says so.
might have to see a quack meself, done me knee snowboarding. grrrrrrrrrrrrrr. and it ain't getting any better.

Michael Reilly - Maybe you should have bought him a bmx then G instead of a cruiser....... Just keep pestering him and he'll buy a bike and go riding, He was talking to me lastyear about buying a new bike, He liked the Blackpearl..............
My Choices: UK - Andy Burke (Get yourself fixed Andy) & Craig Campbell.
US - Sir Bob Haro & Eddie Fiola.

Gettin' Mic a CRUISER was supposed to get him ridin' SOMETHING, then hopefully he'd choose a 20 incher himself, but it hasn't happened. (Much like his "snowboarding", he talks a good game , but never delivers....) Gettin a freestyle bike is a personal choice - not somethin someone else can do 4 u.
Andy Burke needs new hips b4 he can get back on a bike - he's buggered them!

I am aware that Andy needs new hips that's why I said (Get yourself fixed Andy) and I also know buying a BMX is a personal thing but no need to take everything so serious Mr F.

Tried them twice, both in 1988 at comps with the adrenaline running high , crashed them both! Hurt my ankle really bad on one at Alfreton, this one I got away with at the Jack Kane Centre in Edinburgh...

i loved pedal pickers. forwards and backwards.
i'd love to have a go a one again. so if anyone has an old school rider with a coaster and is bringing it to MK08, come and find me...
although having never done them for about 18 or so years, i'm sure i will still be able to do a forwards one. the backwards one, although easy enough once you're up there make take a bit more bottle and agility to get into...
-
I would love to see Terry Jenkins back on a bike. I did give him a bit of stick last time I saw him and told him he has to ride again. He has a few old war wounds but I think we can work around them.
Good idea - possibly the most unique style on a quarter pipe!

Don't need a coaster for the forwards one Trev...... although I suppose it does make them a little easier!

I think TJ rode goofy didn't he? he deffo got some good air in the first kellogs on the torker.

yeah we both rode horsefoot :2funny: we thought all the best riders did bitd

Ha,Ha, thats funny I recall one of you said something like you wanted to be just like Fiola at the first kellogs. ;D

I know, but I never tried them with out. Never had a good enough back brake.
In fact the only people I remember doing them with a freewheel were Dave Young & Steve McIntosh.
Dave use to have his cranks levels though. Steve actually had his in the same position as a coaster brake pedal picker. I remember he used to go into in from a cherry picker and have to spin his cranks to get them set. Way cool!
-
Would love to see that Trev. I could never do them properly only a normal cherry picker and I ain't done one of them since I was about 16!
For me, I'd love to see Sir Bob ride again.... :smitten:
Isn't fiola still riding on/off nowadays? ???

I always found pedal pickers easier than cherry pickers. maybe because on cherry pickers i always had brake bolts ripping into my trainers and digging into my foot.

Ok point taken, did you not make the little plastic plate thingy and zip tie it over you brake bolt to save ripping your vans, i remember making one out of a haro no plate :idiot2:

You must have missed me then! Havn't done 'em in a while, but it was a half decade off the pegs onto the pedals. Used to tailwhip out to decade and once did pedalpicker to decade - kinda like a double decade with a pedalpicker in the middle. Possibly the best trick I ever pulled. Only pulled it once mind....

I had thought about it plenty of times, but never really did it. I did use to pull the back wheel as far back as i could so my foot would fit in just below the brake bolt.

Sorry Gary, must have miss that. :(
I did love a pedal picker to decade (in the double decade style). I used to do them a lot. It was the best practice for learning double decades.

I do know for a fact the Eddie fiola was crying like a spoilt brat to Geoff Barraclough that Jess Dyrenforth was going to high and making him look bad on the tour in 85. And I mean crying like a girl tears sobbing the full works saying you guys dont understand all these people are here to see me and I must go the highest. Sad but true.
interesting read
