Title: Race Tyres.. What do you use?
Post by: Brandy Truffle on January 28, 2008, 08:40 AM
What is the tyre (tire) of choice on a current new school race bike?

Just got myself a superb 2008 'Bubba Harris' Signature Redline Flight Pro XXL i got a seriously good deal on in the USA.Not having owned a "new school" bike before, Am fascinated at the general technological advances made on the various parts and weight saving over any previous "old school" bike i may have had or currently own..

Yet find it odd the Tiogas it came with, apart from no sidewalls now, sport exactly the same tread i raced on 25years ago.  ???

Probably never end up racing the thing, but who knows..its a great rider,i know that much.  :daumenhoch:

Just a side comment here, but looking at this Redline, all alloy frame, reminds me of the early PK Rippers i drooled over BITD.. Just shows how far ahead of the time SE Racing was in the early 80's,eh?

Intense tyres are very popular.  Had the same set on my cruiser for 2 years now.

I think Kenda make the K-Rad tyres.

Not certain though.  Tyres aren't something I pay much attention to  ;)

K-Rad tyres are made by Kenda and come on a lot of completes to keep costs down.

For new school racing i use Maxxis Holly Rollers

FRONT HOLY ROLLER 1.95
REAR SUPER CROSS 1.75
SUPERCROSS HAS LOWER PROFILE TREAD
FOR USE ON MOST TRACKS
TRACKS ARE LOT HARDER AND HAVE TARMAC BERMS
MORE GRIP AROUND CORNERS
COMP 3 DONT SEEM TO LIKE TARMAC CORNERS

While we're on the subject, what's with the all black tyres ans opposed to the skinwall ones from bitd? They look heavier - are they?

I don't know whether tyres these days are heavier, but I expect they're stronger to take into account the very high tyre pressures that racers run now.

I run Intense Halo 1.75 front and rear, pumped up very hard (70 psi).

NOT SURE MATE
STILL WEIGH THE SAME.I DID USE TO PREFER THE SKINWALLS .
THEY LOOK GOOD WHEN YOU FIRST PUT THEM ON.BUT
AFTER A FEW WEEKS RIDING THE SKINWALL TYRES
START TO LOOK A BIT SHITTY THOUGH,
MAYBE ITS FOR LOOKS :daumenhoch: :)

IRC are good quality tires, Gary.

Didn't know you had an Ultrabox.  You should be racing that in Masters instead of the Robbo.  You're easily fast enough.
