I've just become the owner of this. Do any of you Hoffman experts have any idea how old the frame may be, what forks they are and what Bars and stem it may be wearing.

The frame is 94. The bars look like haro kneesaver 2's. I can't see the fork dropouts, may help with a pic of them.
-
Is that an early or late model. I don't know anything about these frames to be hnest. :LolLolLolLol:
-
its an early one .not sure about the stamping on the outside of the dropout as mine are inside on the other side
so maybe a ramp room version.
-
That's an early frame. The dropouts look 3/16" thick.
-
I think a brief history lesson is needed here lads.
When did they first come out and how long were they made for.
Pictures would be good as well. :LolLolLolLol:
-
I'll give it a try. The first frames came out in 94 like the one you have pictured. Curved BB gussett and coaster tab on the chainstay. Then the dropout were thickened to 1/4".
In 95, the coaster tab was moved to the seatstay.
Then the gussett was changed from curved to round.
In 96 the dropouts were shortened.
After the last 96 in the pic, which all were US made, they went overseas. Those had 14mm dropouts and HB stamped on the headtube gussett. I could be wrong on some things? but hope this helps. :daumenhoch:
-
That's really helpful Alan. :daumenhoch:
I've looked through the museum and haven't seen another Big Daddy with the coaster tab on the chainstays, so perhaps there's not that many of these over here in the UK.
-
Nice score! Alans the Big Daddy master.
-
Seems to have a good collection of them going on there. :daumenhoch:
-
Yep he has more than Kevin Jones ever did. LOL!
-
We'll have to see if we can sort something out with this one then. :LolLolLolLol:
-
Ya you better order a set of Bykes Big Daddy decals. gotta build it up the way it should be. Actaully that frame could have had the decals that were on the test bike in BMX Plus.

if the droputs are 3/16 thick then it might be an SE made one ?
i did get an e-mail from mark owen at hoffman bikes about when all the changes were made ,but have lost it now :tickedoff: :idiot2:
nice find zippy
-
Were they made by SE as well then?
Which would be the right decals for it then as I take it the one in the picture above is the same frame with the same thickness dropouts as mine.
-
i had a chrome se made big daddy. great geometry but the 3/16 dropouts would fold like paper - and thats just riding flatland.

i think SE made them '93-'94
ramp room '94-'96
tiawan 96-98
so 'cause your has coaster mount on chainstay looks like an early on -also with the two cable guides on the downtube ?
-
It'll be here soon so I'll take soom good close up pictures for you all. :daumenhoch:
-
I don't think you will find those decal that are on the test bike. Better off going with some of Marks repop decals. Unless a person could find a better pic of the test bike and copy those.
-
I'd better start trying to find some close ups of those decals then. :LolLolLolLol:
-
Well it arrived this morning. The chrome is really, really nice, not rust whatsoever. I'll post up some pics of it on Wednesday evening but it's very, very nice indeed.
-
Yes! Lets see more pics.
not sure about the decals like in the test though. Never seen them other than the test and it doesn't show a clear pic of them.
Anyone else have a pic of a big daddy with those decals?
-
I dont know if these are any help. I posted them up a while ago but as they are still in my Photobucket its easier to repost than to find the old thread
And I know I didnt have to include the HAF pages, but why would I do that? ;)

Alex! Great stuff. I saved those for some cool reading. I like reading differnt stuff. All I saved was My BMX plus collectiion. Year of BMX action, RideUS American freestyle etc all gone. Oh! i do have a few years of Snap.
-
Right I'm back from my training course now so I'll take some close up pics of the frame tomorrow at work and post them up. Apart from a few small nicks and a bit of cable rub it's in extremely good condition.
-
Right, here the long awaited pics.

Thats in really nice survior condition Si, now just how much did it cost you >:D
-
Well when you take into account the bank fees the cost of postage and other things it wasn't as cheap as I thought. ;)
The cranks will also need a rechrome and a sticker set, but they're going to go on my Raleigh Aero pro Burner so won't be for sale for a while if at all. They will be show standard though so will be worth the expense. :daumenhoch:
-
what are the forks si 80s forks
the frame looks in great nick but i dont understand the serial number at all.
cranks look sweet also great find :daumenhoch:
-
I don't know how the frame numbers work, but I was surrprissed to see it etched with a '96 as I thought it was a '94. Although all the physical clues point to it being a '94 model so I'm not sure what the story behind that is.
No idea what the forks are. I assumed they were Hoffman but I'm no expert so they may not be and I wouldn't have a clue.
The whole thing was bought because of the cranks. :LolLolLolLol:
-
no not hoffman forks not even similar shape.
the frame is confusing almatreb might be worth another ask
the cranks are the best bit thou :)
-
Nice Si - great find for the cranks alone! Sweeeet.
The forks are definately not Hoffman as Dan says.
The frame is an odd one...by the looks of the welding I would say that it is Ramp Room made, but there shouldn't be a serial number.
Can you have a feel of the downtube? Does it have a flat spot on both sides like the tubing has been pressed into an oval?
-
i was edging towards ramp room as the welds dont quite look good enough to be se made
not that they are bad in any way, just se mde a rearly even job .that looks like my old one.
-
Simon just confirmed that there are the ridges on the downtube...so definately Ramp Room...
SE used pre-formed oval tubing, whereas to save money when Hoffman started manufacturing himself he bought round chrome-moly and then pressed it into an oval using two car jacks and two bits of wood...hence the flat spot on the tubing.
The serial number is still a mystery, but they experimented with so many things during the Ramp Room days that they might have decided that week that they would put serial numbers on. Who knows? I wouldn't have thought the '...96' means 1996, I imagine just a coincidence - but I'm baseing that on a sheer guess and have no facts to back it up...other than the wishbone and a production dateline for that particular type of Big Daddy.
Lovely frame that though Si. Put it with Dan's Ramp Room Taj, and the Ramp Room Condor I sold to YGT Mark and that would be one fine collection. A real piece of history.
