Title: A nice young lady needs some help
Post by: thebigdog on February 12, 2008, 06:05 PM
Evening radsters  :2funny:

About a month ago a girl called Sophie posted in the shout box that she was trying to find a blue 92 GT Performer.
I sent her a PM and it turned out that she was trying to get one for a surprise present for her boyfriend as he has a big birthday coming up (where do you find women like this, mine just gets me socks  :2funny: )
She told me that he had a GT years ago and still carried a picture round of him on his GT in his wallet (good lad)

She said she would try and get the picture, scan it and send it over and I said I would try and help her find one.

Turns out its not a 92 and it looks more like an 84 (anyone spot something to date it that i am missing??)
She wants to try and get it as close to the bike in the picture as she can, i have pointed out that that is gonna be really hard as you can not see half the stuff on it, she also has limited funds.

She wants to roll this out as a surprise at his birthday party which is in June.

Anyone got a good base to start with?
Can anyone ID any of the stuff on it?
Anyone confirm its an 84?

Cheers
Matt

Yes I remember this in the shoutbox... I think its an 85/86?  ::) Certainly not a 92 that's for sure  ;D At this very moment I wouldn't part with my 83 or 85, so I can't help her out I'm afraid but I'll keep my eye out  ;)

Now why does that picture remind me of ZED  ::)  :2funny:

Apart from the Skyways and what looks like Panaracer freestyle tyres not too sure on the rest  :-\

Izumi Zebra chain perhaps  ???

Just zoomed in on pic and you may be right with the comp 3's and Suntour pedals

Also look like Skyway stunt pegs as they were a different thread to to fit skyway axles  :-\

I have just been busted by my girlfriend who wants the "Sock" line deleted and would like me to tell you all that she tracked down some Araya 48's all on her own when I was putting my 87 GT Team together.  :-X

I also have to write, I am an idiot or i will get no tea.

401`s Coaster Tuffs, look like Fs883 front caliper with potts, poss GT freestyle bars, some parts would have been out of the shiners box a few years ago.

The decals are 85 by the looks. Would have to go with gt chainwheel and powerdisc?? Poss blue comp 3's? White gt freestyle bars, rear brake odyssey or nippon......but i would say deffo 85 frameset and loks like a performer from my house

That's the bollox  :4_17_5:

I'd say it's an '84 frame and fork - in Blue  :shocked:

The reason I think so is the fact there's no cable guide on the fork and the seat stays meet the top tube in the middle - sweeeeet  :smitten:

My bday! :LolLolLolLol:

Defo an 84 IMO.
White Mx1000 brake set up. (Good luck! ;D)
Black mx seat clamp
black Kashimax MX seat!
Suntour xc2's
Redline 401's
comp3's
gt performer bars.
white sugino chainwheel with spider

EXPENSIVE! ;)

For it to be the perfect present she would have to get it spot on.  ;)
If i was you i would pursuade her to just source the f+f and get it powdered. He would be chuffed with that and it would give him the painstaking enjoyment of having to finish it off! >:D

just get an 85 one mate. He wouldnt know the difference. ;)

i think Munners might have something there!  if she gets the right frame and forks and gets it powdered that'll cost a fair bit on it's own!

then she can get him signed up on here and we'll have another one back from the dead!   :daumenhoch:

he will enjoy doing it up in the way he wants and enjoy it soooo much more

That is what I suggested to her, get him the frame and forks and a few packets of NOS bits and then point him in this direction and let him build it. Said half the fun was in the building but she wants to be able to roll it out on his birthday.

Well tell her to have a word with herself in the mirror and listen to the people that know best!

Given by the position of his thumb on the top tube (it's not hidden), I would say it's an 84 frame but it has been re-sprayed as the 84's only came in chrome, white or yellow.

Failing that it was sold to him in 85 as one of the Faze 7 specials (where you could chose the frame and the tuff colours), but using an 84 frame.

Parts - i reckon:

Pedals = Suntour XC-II
Tyres = Copy Comp III's in blue
Bars = GT Performer
Levers = Tech 5
Cranks = Redline Flight
Brakes = MX1000 white
Seat = Kashi MX
Post = ???
Seatpost Clamp = ???
Stem = Who knows, but it's a potts mod
Chainring = Sugino I reckon
Spider = Hmmm could be part of crank if 400's or Sugino if 401's
Wheels = Alloy hub white tuffs
Pegs = Skyway or home made!
Chain = Zebra

Could end up a bit pricey me thinks!

Finished building this the other day and Sophie came and picked it up today. Its the lads birthday this week and she is planning on chaining the bike up next to all the other bikes in a park near her house (she is going to get a mate to watch it). She is then going to tell her boyfriend they are going for a walk and casually walk past it (women are cruel).
I want put any pictures up yet, I said the first picture had to be him doing the same trick  :LolLolLolLol:

hang on, you built it for her? full spec? exactly? obviously her idea of limited funds and mine differ somewhat.

come on, if there's no pics yet you gotta tell us what the damage was.

The frame at least is an 86 onwards, if I'm not mistaken - has a a coaster brake anchor, late 86 models onwards, i think? Quadrophinia should be able to confirm...

The picture on the first page was all I had to work with, I tried blowing it up but the quality went that bad it was still hard to tell exactly what stuff was (Stem, levers, grips?????????)

Her budget was not going to stretch to the list below as this little list is nearly 2 grand by the time stuff has been blasted and painted.

Frame + Forks 84 or 85 GT
Pedals = Suntour XC-II
Tyres =  Comp III's in blue
Bars = GT Performer
Levers = Tech 5
Cranks = Redline Flight
Brakes = MX1000 white
Seat = Kashimax Aero
Post GT
Seatpost Clamp MX
Stem GT
Chainring = Sugino I reckon
Spider = Hmmm could be part of crank if 400's or Sugino if 401's
Wheels = Alloy hub white tuffs
Pegs = Skyway or home made!
Chain = Zebra

Its pretty close, everything but the frame + Forks, bars and stem is NOS. Tuffs are plastic hubbed instead of alloy, brakes are FS, cranks are GT, pedals are XC copies and so on. I aint telling you what it cost her as its a prestent and she is pointing her bloke in the direction of RAD on his birthday so he is bound to read this thread (if you really need to know because its bothering you that much you can't sleep or something PM me and i'll tell you and send you a pic) It was not about making money, it looked like it might be a laugh to do it. I only charged her what it cost in bits, blasting, powder and so on and managed to come in just about on budget. When she came and got it today she gave me a fat drink. I'm happy, she is happy and i guess her bloke is gonna be chuffed as fook!
Dan and Del need a thanks for the deals on the powder and the decals.  :4_17_5:

I got a call on Sunday from one very happy bloke, he was chuffed to bits with his birthday present and was blown away by the effort Sophie had gone to to get it done. Wanted to say thanks to me for building it and the people who found bits for it, painted it and so on. Sophie had made a scrap book thing full of the pics of it as we got it, the ebay links for the parts and the build.
He sounded like one rad birthday boy to, wanted to know if we all rode our bikes or if they sat around looking pretty. I said was up to him and he replied.....
Great, I am going out out on it then!!!!!!

I got some pics of him on it emailed to me today  :2funny:
