u mean like grooves in metal to give u grip?

In handlebar terms it's the "knurled" section that goes under the stem . . . . . . . .  helps with grip, etc :)

i did knurling years ago at college as far as i can remember its done on a lathe at slow speed; you bring work piece to knurler which has wheels with criss cross pattern wheels turn as they touch work piece hey presto job done :santa_afro:
