Title: Head set question
Post by: kevin rettie on February 16, 2008, 08:29 PM
Thinking on getting a new school F&F but not sure how headset/stem arrangement works.

Can someone help me get my head around it? pics would be great.

go to the nearest bicycle shop and have a look. If you have an mountain bike it'll use the same system

Get all the stuff you usually use to fit headsets ... vice, cup press, wooden blocks, large hammer ..... and thow them all away. Then get a hidden headset, just drop in inplace on the forks and frame, and tighten it up at the stem. Then go back to building a 1" bike to remind yourself what a crap system it is!  :2funny:

That clip was great. Thanks for posting it. I must have build 1000s of bikes, 100s of BMXs (I worked in a bike shop for 10 years) but I still watched that all the way through. Really cool.

I watched an on line product Video from Alans BMX a while ago and he said something about there are 2 types of "new" headset. One is the one we all like, that has an angle machined inside the headtube. The other still has push (hammer) in cups, but they sit inside the headtube. Both these systems look the same when the bike is built, but one is just as bad as the old style. Im not going to try to say what they were called cos Im bound to get it the wrong way round, but watch out for it.
