Title: I went riding with my boys …. For the first time!
Post by: SaMAlex on February 18, 2008, 10:29 PM
On Sunday I took my boys to a small BMX track that Ive been going to for about 20 years. Its very small, all tarmac. but each of the 4 “jumps” are concrete, and are built so they can be sessioned in their own right. My boys still cant (wont) properly ride their bikes. The stabilisers are off but so are the pedals, and they just scoot along.

They had a great time at the track. They were both rolling down the start hill and over the first jump without putting a foot down. They even had a little spin with their pedals on, and did a few straights and corners, but then wanted to take them off again cos they are more confident with their feet on the floor. I had my bike and I followed them round, pushing them up the jumps that were too big for them to get up, and slowing them down when they got too fast down the start hill (full on speed wobbles).

There were some “Real” BMX kids there; low seat, girls jeans, tattoos, 2 pairs of underwear (? WTF is that one about?). It was well funny when my lads finished a lap, pushed their bikes back to the top of the start hill and “hung” with the tuff guys for a moment, before rolling down the start hill again.

You just can't beat seeing your kids razzing round a BMX track!!

My boys got the Micro Mongoose (12" wheels) cracking little bike.

There's a great little 'starter' track at Admaston, near Telford - my little uns' love it!

It's easy to wish their lives away by buying bigger bikes!!!

I look at the 16" bikes about every 2 months - hoping mine will fit one!!

Love the new Lil' Ripper - not cheap at 235 but the ultimate in 'kid cool'

Not seen that before - looks amazin'

Makes the Lil' Ripper look cheap!! there was a Lil' Ripper on ebay in the States that looked like it had little camo pads on it - pretty cool.

I am going to print this thread out and show it to my boys in 20 years time - see how sad their old man was!!

Great to see other Dads havin' fun.

Alex,  does that track have a miniramp tucked away in the corner somewhere?

Quality that Alex, one of my twin girls is well into it, she's 5 and pesters me all the time to go to the track. She's got a redline micro mini to race on(that she's just a little big for now so I need to spend again on a mini! ) but she wanted something to go on the ramps on the park on. So I've just got her this from Winstanleys, its the 2005 model so it was only £100.

shame none of those other riders knows what a seat is for  ::) ones sat on the top tube and ones on the tyre  :-\

bmx these days is getting more and more like trials  :tickedoff: whatever happened to being in the woods throwing dirt around

that eastern looks good but could you really justify spending 400 ! i dont think my T1 stands me in at that much

i say start them out on something cheap and nasty so they can learn like we did  :)

looks like you all had a great time, how old are your boys?

I just got this Haro 360 for my 6 year old boy at xmas, he's just learning to ride it properly and I thought  it was great value at £130, 3 chromo main tubes and chromo forks.....

Nice one Alex.  The life of a BMX dad starts here!

I remember teaching my little un to ride and he was off the stabilisers 2 weeks after his 4th birthday, then he did his first race at Peckham Fun Day at about 4 years and 2 months old.  It's a great feeling.

My youngest is now 3 and a half and hopefully she will be riding by the time she's 4 in September, ready to start racing in 2009.  She's currently on a 12" Curtis, and there's a 16" Redline pit bike and 18" Redline Micro Mini waiting for her (all hand me downs from her brother).  Got her a wooden "like-a-bike", but ironically, she doesn't "like" it.  She prefers to pedal the Curtis with stabilisers.

There are some nice 16" bikes there. Loads of 16"ers have got really high BBs and top tubes but those look nice and low (the S&M is actually a Berringer sig bike so its more of a pit bike for grownups rather than a kids bike).

My boys are almost 4-and-a-half & 3-and-a-half (there is a year and 2 weeks between them). Im well pleased with them for how they are doing so far. They should be pedaling round the track by the summer. They have already asked if I will take them to MK track (they went there once, last April ... Im amazed they remembered!)

Rob, there used to be a metal mini at that track but its gone now. The track got a 'face lift' about 15 years ago when they rebuilt the jumps and put in the mini. Its just up the rode from a new (small) skatepark so its almost worth a visit now (and they are both round the corner from where I work).

You're right Alex about the standover height of the bar, that is one reason why I went with the Haro, the lad could stand over it which made him feel like it was the right size, even though when the saddle was right down he could only touch down by leaning it over

I built that miniramp Alex.  They did the track facelift first, then called us in for a miniramp.  The council officer who looked after it all for the Vale of White Horse left his job a while later and went to work for Fearless Ramps as a 'consultant' and/or salesman type bloke.

Fcuking useless by all accounts, he's gone now   ;D ;D ;D

Wow, thats rad. I was totally around when they were doing the work to the track and rode on the opening day and all. The mini was nice but I never get on with metal surface ramps. And they are never that good to ride when the metal starts to come up, like it usually does (and did on that one too). I think Bencrete did the rest of the track. Its not that great but better than it was, and worth a visit if your near, and if youve got small kids! haha.

Trivia point for you .... before the facelift, the track had a set of doubles and a set of triples. The jumps were like little bumps on the track that you could easly hop over rather than hit cos they were so small, but were still quite far apart. I remember riding there in the 80s with some of the Banbury/Mons ramp crew. Andy Shohara was jumping the doubles ... on his skateboard!

Bendcrete also did a tiny park down the road somewhere didn't they?   The slipperiest thing known to man as I recall.....  can't remember exactly where it was though...

Doubles on a skateboard.  I'm liking that   :daumenhoch:

Bencrete have done loads of parks, but they are based in Abingdon so they have done quite a few round here. Most of them are very samey; 1/4 and or flat bank each end with a driveway/grind block in the middle. Sometimes with a mini set up too. And yes, they are so so slippy. They did the new Meanwhile bowls, which are OK. I havent been there for ages. Maybe the surface has weathered a little and taken the shine off it.

It's been brought up many many times.  They just overpolish the concrete. Nice to look at for the council types, which is probably why they do it...

Death on a stick to us though eh?   ;D

Great feeling riding with offspring, my 6 1/2 rides a Hoffman Scarab 16. 16 inch bikes are a bit of a minefield I have 3 and they all have different top tube lenths 15.5 inches to 17 inches.

Alex, that is awesome that your kids are into bmx.  What an unbeleivable feeling it is to ride with your kids, it makes my heart smile.  I like to just sit back and watch the progression, how hard they push, and the little corner of the eye look that they give you to see if you were watching them take that next step. :smitten:
