Title: Araya 7x can they be respoked? *now with pics*
Post by: djgivvinup on February 25, 2008, 08:32 PM
Got a set of Survivor Araya 7x ? rims attached to a pair of fairly nice hubs both covered in muck but underneath in very nice survivor condition....Thing is the spokes are rusted to hell..
They're aren't really buckled at all so do i take the time to remove the rust from every spoke? (there is a lot of rust!) or can i get them relaced with nice shiny new spokes?

Any help greatly appreciated   :daumenhoch:

heres some pics of the wheels, i gave the front wheel a quick clean as you can see..

yes, go to your local bike shop for a price or check out Stidd's wheel build guide in the tech sticky section and have a go yourself   :daumenhoch:

Fit new spokes :daumenhoch:

.. but remember, take the freewheel off before you start chopping the old spokes out.

sure thing,

make a note of lace pattern... 3 or 4 cross.

remove freewheel.

strip the wheels down and measure the spoke lenght.

just take them to a bike shop, buy new spokes and get him to do it.

Thanks for all the replies :daumenhoch:  I'm thinking of having a go at it myself, im guessing if i tits it up then i can take the walk of shame to the bike shop & get them to do it.  ;D
Right so what i need to know is..

How do you know what lace pattern it is?
Which tools do i need to strip the wheels down?
When i've removed the freewheel, how do i strip the wheels?

Thanks again  :daumenhoch:

they look like a three cross lace pattern. however it looks like you have a low flange rear hub and high flange front which means each wheels having different length spokes.
so for your first try, prob better taking to the bike shop. you will prob need 185mm for large flange hub and 189/190 for small flange hub. don't quote me though, thats just from memory.

strip them first and save yourself some cash. the right way to remove the spokes is with a spoke key but seeing as they are all rusty it would be easier to cut them with some good pliers. might be an idea to try and keep one front and one back intact for size ref.

then you can give the rims and hubs a good clean before getting them built back up. good luck if you do decide to do yourself. Its not that hard to lace them the truing is the hard part

Wot i did...

Remove rim tape.
Take cog off.
Snip spokes about 2 inches from rim (gives you a little leverage to slide main spoke out of hub)
Nipples and cut offs either fall out or just need poking to free from rust dirt.
Resto/clean hubs and rims - use CIF OXY-WIPES to clear the main cr4p off - Theyre awesome!

Job Done. Ready to do whatever you want to them.  :daumenhoch:
