Title: Black chrome - can it be done?
Post by: the_wheelie_king on March 08, 2008, 11:17 PM
Evening all. I'd like your thoughts please. I've very nearly got all the parts I'm after for a Hutch cruiser build, but I'm left with a small dilemma. The rechromed frameset is almost perfect but it's a bit discoloured around the bottom bracket, so I'm thinking about hiding it with a coloured paint lacquer over the top of the chrome. Superbikedan has got a candy red option but my other idea is to go for translucent black like a Leary Turbo. However, I'm very aware that the black came straight off them with the slightest knock. Has anyone out there painted over chrome? Is it a good idea, or will the chrome be unable to hold the paint? Can it even be done? Or is chrome best left as chrome?

Cheers, Bob  :)

if you key the chrome first paint will stick but i have to say not half as good as a stripped frame

my local powdercoater has a transluscent black which when on looks like black chrome, and unlike paint it doesnt flake off.

my local chrome platers say that to black chrome they have to b.stardised the chrome to get the black effect, ive not had it tried yet, would love to give it a go on a frame though. p.s dont paint on chrome, ive tried, no matter how much you try to key chrome, it will easily scratch off :daumenhoch:
