Can anyone post up a pic of a well sprayed bike they've done themselves with rattle can spray paint, and let me know how it's done right, I have seen a couple of proper good examples but it usualy ends up a bit shite when I try it myself, things like runs in the paint or the final laquer looks too thick and doesn't have that shiny paint effect.
Cheers.

not the best picture in the world
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/m147/oldskoolford/100_0348.jpg)
its alllll in the prep
i always start bare metal
ive even polished it before
depending on final colour i use white primer for light colours or grey for dark
i hardly shake the can , i just make sure the can is warm so there isnt any chance of the paint coming out thick , i also always give it a quick spray to make sure there isnt anything in the nozzle
spray away /across the area / then away again . that stops any build up of paint in one area like if you hold the can infront / press / and then move
to start with go for a light " dusting " ie just get a slight haze of paint on it
profesinonals start in difficult areas ie around welds and then do the larger areas in long even strokes
take your time
i always move the can quickly and give lots of short presses as i move over tubes , as the /primer /colour builds up i get a bit of a cloud around the frame that keeps it even
try not to miss areas ie inside of dropouts around brake mounts etc , thats why its best to get the details/hard to reach areas out the way and then move onto the tubes
once primers done i leave it over night , itl " flash " dry in about half an hour but i like it to harden as much as possible before i
get a light scourer ( sprayers have 3m pads for it but household scourers work fine ) evenly rub the blemishes off the frame , i dont use any pressure just glide it over
wipe with kitchen roll and white spirit ( sprayers use panel wipe )
repeat for chosen colour but instead of a scourer give it a light polish to remove " orange peel "
most of all take your time , keep the area clean and make sure nothing will touch it before its dry
itl be dry in a day but wont harden for about a week
ive always crapped laquer so ill leave it for someone else to tell us how to do that :daumenhoch: ( yes thats a laquer run by my seatclamp :-[ )
-
Havn't got a pic but I did it on a mongoose frame.Heres how-
1.Strip frame of all paint and sand smooth.
2.Spray with etch primer- several light coats so it doesn't run.
3.Flat the primer down with wet n dry paper after paint has hardned (at least 7 days).
4.Spray top coats in same way and leave to harden for 14 days.
5.Spray on several coats of clear coat and leave.
6.Flat back the paint with 1800 emery wet n dry.
7.Polish back to super shine with T cut then autoglym and finally wax.Devil is in the detail and prep.
8.Consider powder coat..... :-\

oooh what golds that ?
mines 2 cans of ford arizona gold and then 2 cans of laquer
mines not too durable either lol
theres a lot to be said about powder coat

heres a 50s/60s raleigh i did in rover british racing green with gold touch up for detail
excuse the awful pics :-[ :-[
from memory i didnt laquer this one
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/y165/imperry/100_0195.jpg)
it was found in a hedge and it had been there a while , note the heavy pitting to the chainstays

Thanks for all that info perry and voodoo, and thanks all for the pics some lovely looking bikes especially the candy blue on the decoster (where do you get the translucent paint please?), , now I believe it is possible to get the desired finish I can't wait to try it out again with your advice, I just hope I don't end up attacking my bike with a hammer afterwards if it doesn't work, it's known as the hammerite finish :LolLolLolLol:
Cheers all!
-
go slow and make sure everything clean and youl be fine :daumenhoch:
id say this is wrong , he starts spraying while the can is pointing towards the frame
/>
build up the paint and it wont run
-
Yeah I'm just going to try and be methodical and not rush it this time, can you do the spraying outside? cheers mate.
P.s watched that youtube link, Yeah it looks like he was doing it a little close range, I'll try further away like you said.
-
hers me boys bike i did in nissan green with a hint of gold fleck
i just scotch brited the orange frame did 2 coats of green
and two clear coats .paint has lasted pretty well considering what he's put it thru
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/v340/lazychubs/bikes/angel030.jpg)
-
nice job mate, looks like a factory finish, I haven't got a garage at the moment can you still get a good result outside?
-
i have painted outside but heres no control over keeping birds/dust/small chidren from getting onto the paint
you will be wanting a lot of sun and no wind too
ive seen people paint thick ( there is a technique of wet on wet ) with it at one angle , wait an hour for it to flash off then they move it , place it at another angle and the paint shifts and leaves big runs
that can be avoided by only putting on a light covering a lot of times but itl need plenty of time to dry and with this countrys weather ::)
also if its too cold it can leave a matt finish
wherever you do it expect the area to get covered in your chosen colours dust , well ventilated , itl make you lightly high etc etc lol
edit : lazychubs thats probably the mallest frame ive ever seen , i bet its easy to whip lol
ive heard that the metal flake thats cheap on ebay is good if put in a salt shaker and shaken over wet laquer , aparently extra depth is achieved by putting it between coats of the clear , but i have yet to give it a go myself
-
heres my hoffman condor
just take your time with prep and dont spray too close
this came out superb, but i am an old pro at rattle can spraying
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/g279/spesh1967/100_0570.jpg)

-
I can't believe some of these have been done with cans of spraypaint, definately given me inspiration! That hoffman paintwork looks incredible
-
i use the cans you get get from carrs they do all sorts of colours and can even match a certain colour you want
i pay about 15 quid a can
-
A decent finish can be obtained with a most spray cans ... remember the skill is mainly with the prep work :daumenhoch:
A good etch primer is a good starting point and helps improve paint adhesion too
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/a217/steve167690/Haro%20Sport/etchprimer.jpg)
Aerosol paint does have a downside ... it can take weeks to totally cure and it's prone to mark easily when bike building :(
Steve
-
thanks, I have primered it today, it's looking pretty good but I looked closely and although it's even it has a kind of eggshell bumpy texture u know? like not smooth like glass, do i need to use wet wet and dry sandpaper? how long should I wait to sand it?
Cheers
-
depends how hot it was during curing
i always wait an hour or so
then wet sand it
-
i leave mine over night
then get a scotch pad ( scourer the missus uses to do the dishes )
rubbed lightly then white spirit on a kitchen roll
remember though that primer needs a rough finish so the paint adheres to it ;)
-
Ah, is that that sponge thing with one rough green side on it and one sponge? do you wet it?
Cheers.
-

I painted this a few weeks ago ,with a tin of plasticoat
Warmed the frame up a little first ,primed it , 2 tins of yellow paint :daumenhoch:
Its a rider so wasn't too fussed about a fantastic paint job ,but its not too bad at all ;)
What you gonna paint like Fraz ::)
Gary..
-
i like that colour , whats it called ?
ive never wet scotch pads or sand/glass paper , i see it as counter productive as id rather not have water getting under primer
GO LIGHTLY start somewhere hard to see like the inside of a dropout to get a feel for how much pressure is needed
also the sponge on the back helps stop finger shaped ridges in large areas :) ( with just a bit of sand paper all the pressre is where your fingers are so you dont get an even rub over the whole area , if you use a solid block like someone would in the auto trade you would just end up with uneven lines along all the tubes , the spong gives enough rigidity but not too much :) )
if you reallllly want to make sure the primer is even you can use a contrasting colour primer and just lightly cover it so it has a slight haze , as that gets rubbed off it shows high and low spots , but thats only really a concern if you want to make a bonnet look like glass lol
-
That performer looks really nice man, the blue anodized parts go really will with that pale yellow. It's a Fly Spanish Fly I'm spraying, I'll put a pic up of my undercoat I did today, I find it hard to leave it I think that must've been the problem in the past with painting I just want to put the next coat on or sand it, but I'm following the advice and giving it 24 hours, it's going to be candy red I've ordered some off ebay and a silver car spray to go underneath it, and it's gonna have white forks.
Thanks for that about the scourer perry, so just dry and rub it down light and evenly all over.
Cheers.
-
sounds really nice , its hard work keeping away from it lol
yep just rub it down and clean it off after :)
-
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/ii227/firebird4130/flybikes444.jpg)
Here's the undercoat so far
-
looking good so far mate
-
Cheers mate, I'll post pics up through the stages, I just hope it doesn't end up a shameful mess :LolLolLolLol:
-
:daumenhoch:
your doing fine
-
I,m on doing a Diamond back pacer 500
And am going to put clear over the primer ;)
as soon as i put the primer on i thought what a nice colour grey that is
performer colour is just yellow by plasticoat i think
Looking good so far Fraz
I did these forks with white plasticoat
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/i99/poolysheriff/002-14.jpg)
-
Nice forks and spray job mate, yeah I've always liked primer grey as a finish, used to have an s&m dirtbike that came that colour, would like to get another dirtbike sometime. There's a firebird with frame and forks on ebay at the moment, was lookin out for some forks for ya
-
Hey poolysheriff - i'm liking those forks ;) just wondering which plasticoat you used - i'm going for white myslf but a quick google brought up various types (Plastikote for hard surfaces no primer required, Plastikote for metals and kitchen appliances, Plastikote white Hi-Gloss, Plastikote for tiles and smooth surfaces etc.) Help :LolLolLolLol:
Oh and Fraz how are you getting on with yours now ? Any pics ? You sound like your going through all the fears i'll be going through in a few weeks ;D
-
Well I am now the rattle master! 8) But seriously I can do a pretty good job now, sprayed quite a few things recently(frames, forks ,seatposts, bars, the patio, the shed :LolLolLolLol:) , still not too impressed with the stickability of car sprays though it does flake off quite easily like when you're setting up your bike, I've used plastikote since too and it's definately different to car sprays I used the gloss one on some cranks and they look like they've been powdered, I found you don't need to do all the sanding between layers with plastikote but to me it doesn't feel proper dry for a few weeks but sticks much better, whereas car spray seems to feel dry quicker but scratches more easily, but I could be wrong.
Heres the crank arms -
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/ii227/firebird4130/pinkcranks.jpg)
Good luck !

heres my latest rattlecan job inc the front wheel
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/v340/lazychubs/bikes/100_2133.jpg)
-
I bought an old Renault Clio last year that was white apart from one cream door that must have been replaced at some point. Cos the car only cost me £142 I decided to tackle it, cos it wouldnt matter so much if I messed it up.
I did all the prep work, undercoats, paint layers and lacquer coats out in the car park of my office one weekend. Considering the environment (dry weather, bit of dust whipped up by the ligth breeze, flies everywhere etc) I didnt do a half bad job.
This security guard came over to see what I was doing and the fact I was aerosol canning a car door but actually getting a decent finish he thought I was some sort of god. I even newspaper masked off the front end of the car making me look like a proper pro. :D
-
maybe he thought you'd sprayed the whole car and were just finishing it off :LolLolLolLol:
-
Yeah those plastikoted crank arms look good fraz - did ya have to do many coats ? and did you use a primer first ?
-
I sanded down the original black powder coat on the cranks so it was flat and non glossy, 1 coat of primer and two coats of plastikote :daumenhoch:
-
Very nice mate - and may i ask what primer did we choose :-\
-
I just used halfords grey primer just to make sure I'd sanded the surface properly, it's better to see it all as one flat colour than a mix of sanded black powder and bare metal :daumenhoch:
-
i rattle can everything, too poor to powder coat ::)

8) Fluorescent Goose 8)
just sprayed this for the summer, well whats left of it , :LolLolLolLol:
you need shades :coolsmiley: even when its cloudy to ride this goose.
its Plastikote Fluorescent yellow, the finish is great but it wont last more than a few rides ;)
this is the before in the middle

and after :coolsmiley:

Cheers Bob
-
Blinding finish! :LolLolLolLol:
-
Aye, its canny bright like
-
Yeah mate - nice finish ! Think that might be an ammaco rather than a goose though bud ;)
How many coats did ya do ?
-
Mongoose wire wheel i think mate defo Goose forks
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/jj239/bmxbob/wirewheel.jpg)
two coats of plastikote white primer then a full tin of plastikote Fluorescent yellow :coolsmiley:
-
Hmmm..... Gusset looks similar but i've never seen dropouts like that on a goose there's a whole page on goose droput ID here : http://www.vintagemongoose.com/frame/dropouts.php (http://www.vintagemongoose.com/frame/dropouts.php) also behind the bottom bracket is usually box section rather than tube as is usually behind the seat post for a model with that gusset and then there's the rear brake bridge usually flat not tubed .....hmmmm.... I'm startin to wonder what ya got there - any one else that can shed any light i'm stumped ???
Still a quality paint job whatever she is :daumenhoch:
-
they dont show the wire wheel drop outs on the vintage site
but deffo looks like one tho
-
Sorry dude - i still ain't sure she's a goose - maybe a niitaka check it out :
http://bmxmuseum.com/bikes/niitaka_/854 (http://bmxmuseum.com/bikes/niitaka_/854)
Sweet lookin paint job tho 8)
I've looked for some detailed pictures of the mongoose wirewheel and they are a bit thin on the ground - didn't the mongoose wire wheel appear in the ammaco catalogues back in the day rather than the mongoose catalogues ? Had a look through all my mongoose catalogue scans and can't find it hmmmm..... maybe it was a UK only release manufactured outside the US ?? I'm sure there is a mongoose specialist on here that can spill all the beans.............. :D
I'm dyin to find out now ! What does the serial number look like ?
-
Right then - a bit more searchin and research and i think you might be right with the wire wheel ID which is technically an ammaco as it's a european manufactured frame that only appeared in UK ammaco brochures (hence why the drop outs don't appear on the vintagemongoose website) fook me they didn't half copy it with that niikata though ! Wonder if they ever got sued back in the day ? Still be interesting to see what the serial number looks like ;)
-
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/m279/zed2000/rad329.jpg) :)
i did the forks aswell, and i did my 95 kona kilauea, puke colour :LolLolLolLol:

sorry for the delay on the serial number.
here it is, bottom bracket - 7137457
(outside, left) rear drop out - D6 20
brake bridge - 88
-
Yeah deffo not a US mongoose serial number for that era - probs a UK ammaco mongoose - cool :Great_Britain:

Here's my latest bike I've done, I think it's my best so far.A final Polishing with wax really does bring out the shine, I just use one from tescos, and an old t shirt or rag, paint was halfords car spray.

Cheers mate :daumenhoch: Yeah it's one of those things I never thought I could do after a few disasterous attempts so now I just look at them after and think "did I do that?" :LolLolLolLol:

Hey everyone , Dave here , i`m a newbie too ,got a tatty old haro zippo frameset to tart up as i`ve seen some lovley ones done as master reps on bmx museum . Never done any rattlecan work at all and was bricking it , but as i`m on a realyy tight budget and powder / chroming was too expensive , i thought i`d give it a go ,as it wasn`t as if i`d spent hundreds on an old sport or master frameset . Got the idea to use old guitar stands to hold the frame forks and bars whilst painting , used all my old curtains to mask up my little utility room at the back of my house, and it`s turned out good so far , 2 coats of grey primer bought form the local car psares shop , once its painted and stickered i`ll post the results . Thanks all for the top tips i`ve got on here ,couldn`t have done it without all of you guys !! :daumenhoch: heres the berfore ,during ,and up to now pics!! IT`S THE STICKERS I`M REALLY NERVOUS ABOUT :-[

Whoa that looks cool! :daumenhoch: So hows all the masking done do you have templates made or something like that?
-
masking tape m8 ,,,started with a base coloure of white ,then masked off the area that was the next ,and a lot of newspaper to protect the already spayed
areas ,,,and then where the coloures change get some pinstripe(or go faster stripes) from halfords to hide the mask lines :daumenhoch:
p.s i then finished with clear laquer ,,when cured flattend off with some fine wet and dry and then polished it up
-
Good idea with the go faster stripes :daumenhoch:
-
Here`s my zippo retsoration a bit further down the line the sticker application tips on here was a great help ... thanks all !!

Cool :daumenhoch: I tried doing a candy red and put down a silver base coat first then put the red on and it just burned off the undercoat, probably should have used the recommended base coat :idiot2:

Here's my rider - arrived from the USA looking like a proper bag of shite, but like the Millenium Falcon, she's got it where it counts and is a Haro underneath :daumenhoch:
Several hours of prep and a couple of coats of plastic primer and topcoat, here she is :smitten:
Not bad for a $46USD frame chucked in the box with stuff I'd already bought........ :LolLolLolLol:

My brother did it actually - a dab hand with a spray can indeed. I'll be riding this at Creation at the Xmas do, but it's got some black Tuffs on it as the Z's were scary when we were kids, so the extra few stone makes them realllllllly scary!
Oh, the forks are Ammaco, so no need to tell me they're not LG's :2funny:

Couple of little tips which may be useful re: paint compatibility . . .
I've rattle-canned a few frames over the years and found Halfords/Holts car paint to be the best although as mentioned above it does tend to mark easily. Plastikote gives a lovely finish but is pretty soft until cured so needs to be left a good couple of weeks before building. I've found Hammerite pretty similar to Plastikote but having used it on mtb sus forks I found it was affected by grease and oil (paint became very soft) - a compatible lacquer over the top would probably prevent that. Lastly, I found out the hard way this week that Plastikote and Halfords spray are not compatible :'(. Flatted the white powder coat on my newly acquired Dirt Bike frame and gave a couple of coats of pink Plastikote before overspraying with Halfords Volkswagen orange (the intention being to recreate the hot rod orange my mtb). Test patch inside the dropouts was fine but when I came to do the full frame, cue a rather wrinkly paint finish >:( Anyway, thanks to the snow and a couple of days off work (I work in a school - health and safety is great), out came the wet and dry again and a couple of coats later it's looking pretty good (http://mamadirt.fotopic.net/p56244764.html) - ready for lacquer this weekend then an exercise in extreme patience before it's built up.
Edit: Another quick tip - check your lacquer is compatible with your decals before spraying :-\ My headtube decal just decided to shrivel like a dried prune after the thinnest of coats - fortunately I was able to whip it off once it was touch dry, before the final coat.
That Quad looks fantastic - what a finish :4_17_5: Did you use Halfords spray? (I'm guessing so by the cans in the pic)
