Title: Rich Sigur....any info, pics Couple of vids now added
Post by: aerostylie on March 23, 2008, 11:51 PM
Hi folks. :daumenhoch:

After watching one of the BMX Beats, it was either the Cherry or Tizer (and a Blue Peter short on You Tube) I was well impressed by how good Rich Sigur was. However looking on the net, I can't seem to find much about him, even less picture wise, apart from my current avatar from a BMX mag.

Anyone have any info or help at all ::)

Paul :)

Cherry Coke International BMX Beat 86 Winner.
Won it basically because he pulled two 540s in the final and was american.
In my opinion Pepi blew him away on flat and was maybe level on ramps. If Rich did beat Pepi on ramps it wouldn't have been by as many points as what Pepi should have beaten him on flat.
That was back when the UKBFA were desperately trying to get American riders over here to compete and when they did come over, they always seemed to be biased towards them.  Rich Sigur was a great rider, but he didn't come close to Pepi.
When RonW and DMC came over (and of course Hoffman), then yes, I agree they deserved to win.  But I'm sure I remember Josh White placing really high in Pro Flat one year.
I think one comp, RonW came first in Pro and Josh White came second. Eddie Roman won Masterclass and Scott Freeman won flat for his age group.

i'm in touch with rich sigur via email. he contacted me about the youtube vid i put up of him & ron w on blue peter. i still gotta get round to sending him dvd of it & bmx beat sumtime. he said he still has 2 haro sports which he is sorting out and has the odd ride now and again. i did tell him about this site & to join up, maybe he will if i say there is a thread about him. i also mentioned andy shohara was having a reunion for his 40th and left it up to him to contact andy about going. sure he said something came up so he didn't make it.

Cheers for the pic DaveMc :daumenhoch:

Got the Cherry Coke on DVD so will try and figure how to get it onto here, although Trev might (BMX) beat me to it. The crowd (and judges) were just blown away by the 540s (probably don't seem much now but back then :D )

you should listen carefully hen rich sigur is being interviewed by andy ruffell for some classic xenophobic heckling from the crowd.  somebody should point out to carlisle youths that a californian with hispanic (?) features is definitely NOT from Pakistan!!  :D

540's back then were like flairs in the 90's and prob like  flair whips nowadays. if you know what i mean.  :daumenhoch:

i just emailed rich about this thread so hopefully he sees it and joins up.

here's what i posted on youtube of rich.

Ok, managed to film off the TV (soz about film quality) Spidey's runs at one of the Cherry Coke preliminary rounds 1986 (not the final) as I thought these runs were cleaner (even though Rich won in the final). Turn up the volume to hear commentary from Andy Ruffell and the legend that is Gaz Top.

Flatland (2min 3 sec): Almost faultless, just one foot down:
http://media.putfile.com/Rich-Sigur-1986-Cherry-Coke-Flatland

Ramp: (1min 56sec): 540 at end of run:
http://media.putfile.com/Rich-Sigur-1986-Cherry-Coke-Ramp

Hope you like

Paul ;)

ps: If you change the video size in the putfile options to 'Original Window' it should look a bit better

Dont worry I know how good your beat knowledge is, I wasn't sure if you would know what a stupple was as bill was doing em at first Holeshot before you were riding i think, i then recalled they did a bmx beat how-to with bill and said trick, a really nice o/s trick.

yeah, it was before my time. my 1984 bmx beat knowledge isn't too good as i only saw it for the first time about a year ago and only watched it a handful of times compared to the 1000's of times i've watched the others.

You have to upload your pics into Photobucket from your 'My Pictures',

and then copy the image code from Photobucket when its uploaded...

and paste it into your message board when you post a message...

you can preview your message before you post to make sure it works!!  :daumenhoch:

OK, I'm gonna hope that this doesn't rank up there with the 'what's a looptail?' question, but what's a Stupple? I can remember hearing the phrase bitd but I can't remember what it refered to.

close enough. roll back, turn the bars 90° take one hand and one foot off. back foot leans on the coaster brake, the bike then spins around 360° or more.

note: it was called a stupple cos apparently there was nothing else to call it...  ;D

I think they were intended to be 540 rotation, a coaster was best, i learn't them with a free-wheel using them frame stand fiola handle jobbys i used to put my heel on the handle as if i was applying a coaster.

Probably my biggest regret in life is breaking my scaphoid bone in my left wrist the night before that contest during ramp practice. If I just hadn't gone for that Death Plant....
I had soooo many new tricks for that comp - after making an arse of it in the previous Bmx Beat, I was out to win that one.
And I let my team down to, which was a shame, 'cos we would have won......maybe!

Welcome to the site Rich, wish I could've ridden with you that day.....

Well, well - that bmxbeat programme is interesting.I used to ride with Ian Tovey in Coventry many years ago.He was dead lucky- the 1/4 pipe we rode was 50 meters from his house but I had to ride 2 miles to get there! I havn't seen him for years but bumped into another one of the gang last year who says he still rides every now and then.Is he a RAD member?

what's a Stupple? I can remember hearing the phrase bitd but I can't remember what it refered to.

''The Stupple'' BMX Beat 84 :daumenhoch:
When it appears, reduce the size of the screen (the icon between minimize and close) the film quality is better

Old school coaster brake tricks like Billys are just so cool. Since nobody rides a coaster that way anymore, nobody does these tricks any more, which makes them kinda special. Need to try a Stupple on my bike, must be a way of doin' it on a freewheel!

Hello Everybody,
First Off,  I wanted to say thank you for everybody for welcoming me to the site and for posting all the old school pics on this thread. There are so many things I would like to comment on from what I have seen and read but I will try to keep it short for this first few postings until I get the feel for forums.

Well, Let me tell you all what I can remember from the above posted photo from the October 83 Issue of BMX Action.  I was working at a local bike shop at the time unknown and unsponsored. I had stopped bmx racing for about a year before and started riding the local skate park Skate City in Whittier, Ca. I had met Eddie Fiola a few months earlier when he was still riding for Haro, anyway we would ride together at the park with the other locals a few nights a week.  I saw a flyer at the park promoting the contest at Del Mar Skate Ranch which was about two hours drive away. I begged my mom to take me so when that weekend arrived I packed up my stuff and arrived at practice that Friday night. We had some good sessions practicing and when contest time arrived on Saturday I was ready to go.

I was entered in the 16 and under expert class and I knew I had a decent chance of placing, my only competition was another kid from my neighborhood who also made the trip down he was a good rider, I figured if I could just beat him I would be happy. He was also a rider who no one really heard of until a few months before until he scored a cover shot on BMX Action a few months before a 14 year old Michael Dominguez.  The contest went off well and  after it was all said and done Michael had got the win I got second and I went home pissed.  But that is not the whole story, a couple of other interesting things happened...

I was getting ready to practice the morning of the contest so I was all suited up in my brand new first run DYNO leathers and Morales(Bob) Fiola trick team jersey, helmet goggles etc.  I was walking through the arcade / video game section to the pools and this little boy 4 or 5 years old comes running up to me and says "You look like Spiderman! are you Spiderman?!" I said yep that's me I decided to ride my bike today instead of a web. A photographer was standing close by and overheard the conversation....

I was riding a Mongoose Supergoose at the time which was the strongest bike I could think of at the time but for some reason that day people started asking me if I wanted to ride their stuff, a guy game me free elbow pads, another guy gave me all this cool Oakley stuff, someone else gave me about three pairs of Vans tennis shoes, a number plate , stickers, tuff wheels it was crazy did I just hit the lottery? People down here are cool! I was just some kid who worked at a bike shop I could even afford a pair of Vans tennis at the time. So I was pretty pumped when contest time came around....

Between practice runs this long haired surfer looking dude came up and started talking to me asking my questions about where was I from, how have I been riding and all kids of stuff. I was think to myself, "Man this Mutha F%&#er asks a lot of questions what is this a job interview?! " I answered his questions as best I could and when he was finished he gave me a business card and said to give him a call when I got back home. I just tossed it in my helmet bag without reading it and said okay see ya later...

A couple months have now passed and I was still doing my bike shop job and I had been asking for a couple weeks now if the new issue of BMX Action had came yet. The reply for the past couple of weeks was "no" so I wasn't really thinking about it until the shop owners wife came in and told me the new issue was here. I was just hoping for a long shot chance that I might get a small black and white photo in the issue. So I flipped to the center of the mag and got to the contest section and looked through the small black and whites photos looking for a shot of myself. I put the magazine down and went back to work and I said "Nothing this time." She handed back the magazine and said you better look again. She opened up the magazine and I nearly passed out when I saw the two page spread.  I don't know how long it took to come back to earth but when I did she said "oh yeah I think you got one more photo somewhere in the front" I didn't even think to look at the cover. When I saw it I was Holy Shit! My first cover ever I was now famous! I think I took all the copies home but I don't remember how I got there....

I was cleaning out my helmet bag a couple days later getting ready to practice and I dumped all the stuff on the floor and this business card fell out. I had remembered it being the one the surfer dude gave me I picked it up and read it said, " Bob Haro, President Haro Designs" .... Aww Shit I was talking to THE MAN and I didn't even know it!!! I better call this guy back...

And that's how it began...

Spiderman.

Totally agree ,Awsome story,To be honest i had some doubt if you were the real thing, but anyway Welcome........
Great story,I'm just wondering how much you remember form back then,Sorry to ask to tech stuff but i'd love to know some info on that Sport you rode without the platform on the toptube.I was just wondering if the sport was originaly intended for yourself as you look a tall guy in those shots and always wondered if that frame was designed for yourself in mind, but Haro marketed it using the Dominguez signature on the sport, just a theory, could be totally wrong....again sorry for the tech stuff ;D
Keep the stories coming...Brilliant

Hello Everyone,
Its been a busy week so I ahve been away from the board froa while I wanted to answer a few of the questions that have posted overv the past few days:

From Jay, I was just wondering if the sport was originaly intended for yourself as you look a tall guy in those shots and always wondered if that frame was designed for yourself in mind.

You are actually spot on with this question. The single top tube Sport I was riding in the Pipe photo was the first prototype model. I had attemped to ride the original Master Frame Haro sent to me after Del Mar but I was too short for pool riding I asked if they could build me a longer frame and the prototype Sport was what they came up with.  Although I was the first to ride the Sport they decided to market it with the Mike D logo on the rear chain stays (kinda of a slap in the face) or maybe I wasn't as savvy as Mike's people when it came to negotiating my contract. It was a very well balanced frame for both flat and ramps and many top riders made their careers while riding it.

From Trev: Was a bit disappointed you chose "Spiderman" instead of "Spidey" though....  But like Sean says, great to have another legend on board.

Thanks for the warm welcome Trev, regarding my nickname, it was sort of pinned on me after the episode at the Skateranch, Bob Osborn was the photographer who saw the exchange between myself and the young boy at the park. I remember he called me Spiderman from that day on but it did not transcend into print until many months later.

From Munners: Have you got any of your stuff from back in the day?

I do have a fair amount of stuff from back in the day, I have copies of 90% of the magazines I have been in, I have tour posters and schedules, pictures, video, and thanks to Ebay I have a flo panel that I autographed back in 1984 and some old tour shirts etc. Most importanty I still have all my trophies from the King of the Skatepark and AFA wins. I also have my UKBA world championship trophy.

By the way does anyone know how I can get one of those cool t-shirts with my pic " air salute"

Here is another one from the archive.

Wow,Thanks for the reply Rich, very interesting, thought i was right :LolLolLolLol:

But that must have been a bit of a kick in the teeth though, sorry.
Would love to see those KOS trophies though, seeing you guys riding those parks on video and in magizines was a major part of why we rode then and are still involved today,Respect.......
Shame that proto frame isn't still about, those two proto sports(if there was no others)are one of the most sought after frames out there by freestyle collectors.
Do you still own any bikes and still ride?
