I Am very interested in the history of the HIGHEST bunny hop , i know that Dave Sanderson in the UK done the highest bunny hop back in the 80s maybe 1979 and that he broke the record i was wondering if anyone has the magazine that he was in back in the early days cheers or any info on dave inself

Dave was the first i am sure of it and if i remember he was in the bmx weekly magazine

If he was it wouldn't have been in BMX Weekly in 1979 don't think that went into production until about 80/81. Pretty sure Ruffell set a new record at some point, it might have been at Olympia or Picketts Lock around 82/83.
I thought one of the MTB trials guys broke the record a few years back too but can't remember his name.

Yep Andy Ruffell Picketts lock 1983 it was a world record at the time 39" :daumenhoch:

Top North east guy who gave Ruffel a run for his money bunny hpping back in 83-84 time was a mate of mine 'Gary Prosser' BMX Action Bike featured him hopping over a park bench way back. Think Ive got the mag somewhere.........just dug it out the garage and finally confronted my scanner.....bear with me ???

fantastic memories there with the magazine i so remember that like it was yesterday . but it is really starting to bug me now ?!! i am so sure Dave Sanderson was the record holder maybe he was but in a different magazine and that it was before 1980 does anyone remember Dave Sanderson back then someone must have an old really old magazine

I remember that pic of Gary Prosser. He came up to one of the Scottish Nationals at Danderhall bitd when he was riding for Jos Conway.

They were taken outside of the Herlingshaw center in Eston (which to you and me is Middlesborough) they used to have an indoor race series which ran throughout the winters around 82-83 I think. I remember Ruffel was there on that day and Gary and him went head to head in a bunnyhopping contest over upside down bikes. I think theres a pic of Ruffel in the mag which I'll scan and post later. Bmx trivia that even Trev probs aint heard of..... :daumenhoch:

i remember prosser BITD and i was convinced that i could beat him in a bunny hop contest, oh how those days have gone, Kev Oconner was gonna try n set one up the next time he came to hartlepool but it never happened.
there was a class pic of some dude bunnyhopping a motorbike in one of the BMX mags at the time 83/84 maybe and im sure that was 46", 2 more than my recorded best

I notice alot of n/s riders seem to be able to bunnyhop higher when they twist i.e 180 over something, do you think its easier to bunnyhop higher if you twist??

bit rainy and with a crap gravel take off! the kids loved it though and i got a trophy! it was a very special moment for me!

think it was about 83 when gary prosser went for the record
in sunderland but when it came to the big day he got a bit
stage fright sh*t e but never mind he was still a top rider.

36" thats impressive, I have no idea how high I or anyone else I rode with BITD could hop as we only ever used bricks with a stick on top as measurement so it was like yeah such and such can do 12 bricks! I remember always thinking I could hop higher if I had some form of visual kicker such as a gap in the pavement flags or even a sweet wrapper, must of been in my head but it did seem to help.
