HELLO i'm new on here, i got this website address off someone on Passion Ford.com where we were talking BMX,
i am COZZFATHER on there too, anyway in the 80's i owned 4 DP FIREBIRD FREESTYLERS, in Green and Chrome and a Dayglo Green one and a very rare Bronze one, DP Firebirds were THE bike for me only if wearing a set of SKYWAY TUFF 11'S.
All my Firebirds had Skways, and the last one had a ACS rotor and a coaster brake.
unfortunately in 1993 some tw@t robbed the two i then owned out of my grans back garden where they sat waiting for me to find somewhere for them as i NEVER wanted to part with my babies.
fast forward to present days and i'm the proud owner of a DP RACING FIREBIRD FREESTYLER AGAIN :) (WHAT ELSE WHEN YOUR SCHOOL MATES IN THE 80'S CALLED YOU THE FIREBIRD KID) and early SKYWAY TUFF 11'Sin black but heres the interesting bit.
DP RACING were a North Wales bike manufacturer and i know the place that finished the frames in the 1980'S, how do i know you may ask??? well my mates brother worked there and had a few if you know what i mean :coolsmiley:
anyway a few months ago i went in there and started asking around if anyone remembered the FIREBIRD BMX'S (as there was the Firebird Delta 11 race bike, and after 10 mins a old guy came out and said in the 80'S he did the FRAMES.
I couldn't believe my luck,he started saying how well the things were welded which was nice because even at 13 i knew they were quality, anyway i am getting my FIREBIRD re done in the factory by the geezer who did it in the 80's.
now that as Paul Daniels would say is magic.
my frame number is 2630 and its a late one i think.

cool!!! that's great mate......it goes without saying you asked if they had any old ones knockihng about??
:daumenhoch:
-
Welcome to the club mate :daumenhoch: the DP's are superb. Had mine for 26 years now and just in the process of rebuildind it. Speak to steve (firebird) He is as mad on firebirds as i am. He is starting to build a DP website so would be interested to speak to you.
Cheers
I will PM him your details if u dont mind.
-
By the way mine is '077' nice and early :daumenhoch:
-
thanks chaps :)
just remember though i'm the daddy when it comes to FIREBIRDS, mines gonna RISE FROM THE ASHES >:D
Jeeze i loved the 80's, i used to do about 10 miles a day on me old DP,school paper round etc.
the good old days when a genuine set of DP RACING FIREBIRD FREESTYLER decals cost 1.95
and a set of SKYWAYS were 29.95 each
-
Well lets hope you can fill in some blanks that we have for the site. I have pm'd steve so i am sure he will be in touhc :daumenhoch:
-
Yeh i did ask about any Survivors knocking about but alas in them days everyone wanted or knew someone into bmx's
so they all went, the other thing and the guy said what i was thinking was all DP Firebirds were numbered and it made tracking them easy, my mates mates dad was the gaffer there and we are trying to see if we can find who welded them for DAVE PARKS
or was it DAVE PARRY i get them mixed up,anyway he was DP of DP RACING.
the fella who works there still reckons the frames came from WREXHAM,which is nice as thats where i bought my current DP from
oh and 1 other thing the chrome ones were done somewhere else and i do not know where but i would imagine it would be close.
i am from North Wales and its nice to own a North Wales manufactured Freestyler thats so well regarded :daumenhoch:

I just sold a frameset last week to Spectre and it still had the original bike shop sticker on the seat tube. The bike shop was in Wrexham, Alf Jones if memory serves and it was in Charles Street.
Do you know it Cozzfather. Defo contact Steve (Firebird) Esem top man he wanted mine but I had already done the deal.
Hopefully Spectre hasn't taken the decals off yet and can take a pic off it as it all adds to the history.
-

Welcome and top marks for picking one of the coolest old school freestylers about imo :daumenhoch:
Not all DP's were numbered. I have an early one sitting in my garage which isn't numbered. I know it's genuine cos it's my own one which I bought brand new bitd ;)
-
interesting about the numbers, the guy who works where they were powder coated says they were all numbered, i wonder if where they were welded any got out before stamping?
i'm having trub ( thats a old 80's word :D) finding day glo green powder coat any ideas who sells it???????
my mate has asked the retired old fella who worked in the offices where DP'S were powder coted and he seems to remember stuff coming in from Nottingham , he's is having a think about it, i wonder if the frames were 501 tubed??
-
ive just about finnished this one, full on dayglo pink powder coat.i got the powder from the states and our very own superbike dan did the powdering for me.trouble is me digi camera cant handle the flouresent pink,so its looks lighter than it is in the picture
98% done want to change the seat and i want a white seatpost and a few other bits want changed.

I posted this up in the museum but have moved it to here as i guess it was in the wrong place.
Its a pic of Glyn Lewis riding a green dp during a bmx beat 85 practice session.
-
my brother has bmx beats on video from the 80's, i used to love the music Pepi Winder rode to, i can't remember what it was
called but bmx beat was with Gaz Top weren't it. havn't watched it since about 88 :-\
i nearly bought a pink one,but in the end i got a Dayglo green one, were the dayglo's specials as mine had black and white stickers saying FIREBIRD FREESTYLER??
I really love these old DP pics, i just know i'm gonna end up spending more and more on it to get it right, i started wanting it exactly like i had it in the 80's, then FIREBIRD STEVE, mentioned LADDER BARS to me,and tbh i hadn't thought about Ladder bars for nearly 20 years, now i'm looking out for a set. Don't mention any more goodies,i can't bare it :'(
-
My first chrome DP also did'nt have a frame number, also it came brand new in chrome with just firebird in gold on the frame,a bit like the delta 2 decals .If i remember correctly when they first came out they were all chrome.A mate of mine has a white one and the frame number on that is less than 500? :4_17_5: :Great_Britain:
-
my chrome one had stickers on nearly the same as the DELTA 11, THE FIREBIRD and FREESTYLERwas in bold red, so i went and bought a genuine sticker pack like the repro ones available now and sorted it out.
-
I used to ride for DP in the 80"s with glyn and spent many an hour in the factory while they were being welded etc. and used to help the girls put the stickers on and stuff. great days. I have a "brand new" mid 80"s bike with alloy hubbed skyways on it and I love it too much to ride it.!!!!!!!!!

Yeah - Glynn gave me one of your old DP's and I reckon you'd thrashed it - it lasted less than a week before I snapped the downtube off at the headtube! Nice frames though - light, but not strong enuff....
-
hi
putting stickers on the frame, get in
im putting together a web site on dp racing, and would love to here more about the company if you guys would be interested in helping out.
cheers steve

Oh yeah - bloody good point! I hadn't noticed that that was your first post dude! How the devil are you? Don't think I've seen you since one of the Bmx Beats where you were Gaz Top's stunt double! It was gonna be me, but you had better hair!!! Heehee!

:D GREAT !!!!!!!!!!!
i buy another DP FIREBIRD FREESTYLER,join up to RAD BMX, and on my first post come across fellas as pasionate on DP's as me and then to top it off a DP FACTORY RIDER posts on my thread :coolsmiley:
i am getting the powder coating from america sorted out and Dennis the old boy who powder coated the frames for DP has seen my frame and the first thing he said was "look at the f##king welding on that" in a positive manner of course.
Trevor would you say where exactly the frames were constructed please, mines going back to the factory that powder coated them originally to get re-done but it would be great to see if the company who did the frames maybe did the bars and could re do a few for old times sake.
also i have phoned every bike shop in NORTH WALES,asking about DP RACING and old school stuff and i got absolutely no where, a couple of people remembered them, i even asked the bike shop mentioned earlier ALF JONES in WREXHAM someone has a original DP FIREBIRD with their shop sticker still on but the fella in the shop was a right goon, and i could tell wasn't interested in the slightest.

Hello again Trev! Gary Forsyth here....have you been on RAD for a while (but only started posting?). What bike you got now?
-
:D so the frames were manufactured in the unit in Flint by DP, then went to Chester for powder coating, wonder where the chrome plating was done cos if its local i'll pop down and see if there still going, as when i see one i'm gonna do a chrome one with alloy hubbed black skyways like i used to have.
ALSO regards the powder coating, when finished powder coating the frames were clear laquered to weather proof them and make them more durable, thats from the horses mouth (Dennis @ the powder coating factory)
he also mentioned they had in the 80's a little booth for specials and 1 offs that he remembers some getting done in there.
-
wonder iff any other outside suppliers who did stuff for DP Racing are still trading to day as if they are i'll go round and see if their still going as i live near to Aber parc Flint, i have written to my local paper that goes round deeside to see if anyone remembers DP RACING, but tbh Trevor posting up is great news.
:)
did DP RACING ever sell complete bikes or just f+f and stuff seperatly??
-
F+F's seperately only (+ bars and seatposts)
-
Gaz Top's stunt double - DP factory rider!

Great thread!!
It's awesome to hear such excitement again - I was exactly the same when I re-discovered old-school and tracked down my actual bike from BITD and then re-built it.
Welcome to the site Cozzfather, Trev and Gary. Enjoy.
BTW I've got a great feature interview on DP Racing in an old Action Bike, it has pictures of the factory and an interview with the owner - I'll try and get round to scanning it soon.

CheeRS Dave, i can't wait for ya to get scanning :D

well my letter in the local paper has had a reply from a Firebird fan who is from Chester like me and he seems to really miss his old DP, he mentioned to me a website called "RAD BMX" Where you can find Firebirds :daumenhoch:
my mate who is from Flintshire said there was no letters page in the local paper this week so hopefully it will go in this week,
i'm hoping to get a response seeing as thats where they were made.
my bike this week got NOS f+r green Dia Compe Mx brake cables still new in the bag, and a pair of NOS green Haro freestyle tyres just the same as i used in the 80's, also got a pair of tubes for them.
:D

My chrome one hasnt got a frame number either ,but the 1 i had bitd had it stamped on the rear brake / seat gusset if i remember correctly ?
Does this also mean that the one with no frame number should have the black/gold early decals ?

i would say it would have the black and gold decals, they would have use the same decals sa the firebird and delta2 at that time, my chrome frame has a frame number of 0490 and that had the red decals fitted. i wonder how many where made without the frame numbers stamped on the gusset. could you send me a picture of the frame without the number?
steve
-
Steve, I sent you a pic of my old original Firebird last week, would that have a frame number on it, and if so where?
-
I haven't seen a smoked chrome firebird freestyler in years in fact probably since 1987, i had a bronze one and that was
a very rare bike, i saw some with the dp cut out but mine according to my mate whos brother worked in the powder coating factory was a pre-production trial frame, some other funky colours came out of there one being lemon.
all the frame numbers on firebird freestylers i ever saw were above the rear brake hole.
the chrome firebird freestylers look kinda funny with the early graphics,i always prefered the later ones.
heres a question for ya, is the dp decal on the ladder bars the same as the dp decal on the head tube???????? :D
the black decal looks the same size to me
-

steve
Do you want the whole frame (pic) or just the gusset ;D
If i remember correctly ,i think my chrome 1 from bitd had dp cut out of the gusset as well as the frame # may have been 61## ?
Did they go that high ?
-
Refering to the DP stamp in the platform, I had a GL plus frame a few years ago that had aformentioned cut out in it. It was bare metal when I got it, and was without a frame number. I sold it for £90 on ebay. I think it went to a lad from Cornwall.
Also, there have been a few rumors in the past of a place where there are a load of Freestylers that were never sold, but I dont know where or how many.
I had a NOS frame a while ago, and this has to have come from somewhere!
-
I had two DP Freestylers, a chrome one and a white one. The white one went back to the factory and was redone in pink along with bars & seatpost. At least one was stamped with numbers on the rear brake stay. Both had the DP cutout. IIRC at least one had holes to run the cables through the frame. Sold em both for next to nothing :idiot2:
-
Steve, I sent you a pic of my old original Firebird last week, would that have a frame number on it, and if so where?
which one was that ROX? i have had a few in the past week or so.
i haven't seen a limited edition dp with the dp cut out the gusset yet, all the pics i have seen they just look like standard freestylers.
im sure the handlebar decals would be the same as the head tube decals, they wouldn't make a load of smaller ones just for the bars when they already had some that would fit.
im going to be adding a load of photos to my dp frames page on my web site soon. close ups of the drop outs and gussets. there are also 3 different versions of the firebird frame that i have found.
if you have a dp and its not already in the gallery please fell free to send me a picture over.
steve
-
nice to see s1 on here as he's a fellow passion ford user and iirc the chap who told me about here :D
i have perused my DP LADDER BARS and the 2 DECALS fitted look the same as the frame, mine are 100% original, just put
on at a slight angle, the other one is the same as the seat tube.
here is another DP question for the RAD BMX DP FIREBIRD officianados :P mine has 2 stickers one either side of the lower tube
going into the rear dropout, one says MADE IN GREAT BRITAIN,what does the other side say ?????
made in Great Britain huh :2funny: should have been MADE IN NORTH WALES...
-
when dp first used those made in great britain decals they were made in Woolston, Warrington ::)
-
The stickers on both sides say the same thing "Made in Great Britain" :daumenhoch:
-
approx what year would they have been made in warrington???
going by some of the people i asked and who owned them the numbered frames were shooting up very quick, wonder if
production was doubled so to keep up with demand ????
another question, why doesn't anyone do the made in gb stickers ??
or the stickers for the ladder bars,if you have a fully DP'D DP you need more than what you get off the ebay stuff.
Steve, when did the Ladder bars come out ? i don't remember seeing them very early on
another thing i remember seeing the pink freestylers having all white stickers :P
-
GB Stickers and ladder bar stickers i have here as well as GL silver stickers for the coloured frames :daumenhoch:
-
dp industries ltd were based in warrington, they made the firebirds, delta2 and some of the early freestylers. as the demand grew they moved to a bigger unit in flint , north wales.
the dp ladder bars came out mid 85, they were designed by Glyn Lewis
the pink freestyler had the white decals on and the limited edition freestyler had Glyn Lewis's signature on them too.
-
about 2 years ago there was a limited edition freestyler on ebay. i remember copying the pictures of it but can only find this one now. i think it had chrome forks fitted, i wish i'd bought it now
cheers steve

went up into my Ma's loft the other day looking for photos she may have of my old Firebirds, and i only went and found a unused Firebird Freestyler Radpad set
from circa 85,i thought it couldn't get much better then i found a sticker set for my bike,it made me feel all goose bumpy
i would love to know more about Glyn Lewis and his World Record on a bike like mine,i wonder if Norris Mc Whirter remembers it :P
anyone got anymore pics of Glyn or Trevor ??
also on one of the Firebird Promo's there is referance to Krazy Kevin :D who was he ??
-
would love to see a picture of the rad pad set!
-
the rad pad set is the same pad set as i sell on my site steve
theres photos of trevor on the site too.
what decal set did you have, got any pics
-
The first firebird I had my mate gave it to me and it had a sticker set I don't think I've seen since, the downtube sticker had larger bolder script than most firebird decals, and it was pink, may have faded from red though, the frame was chrome, anyone seen them before?
-
yes, i'll be selling them on my dp web site very soon.
here's dave park's sons bike with them on
and a close up.

-
That's the ones!!!! If I ever decide to get another I'll have a set of them for it. What year were they?
-
they were 0n the 83 freestyler. the very first ones had the firebird decals on. but they were also fitted to delta2 so the must have thought, hand on, we need a new sticker set for this freestyler.
-
one of the ones i had came with the red graphics like above, the pink ones i saw had the later type decals
but all white instead,i havn't yet seen any like that, only bitd.
could Mr DP'S son been Krazy Kev ??
-
where have you seen the name krazy kev before?
-
where have you seen the name krazy kev before?
on your website ;D
"the imput behind our output" advert at the top by the tech drawing, there referance to Krazy Kevin
CRIMEWATCH MODE>>> Who's he, we need to find out :P
-
not sure, one picture has dp so the other maybe another tech drawer for dp

Great thread.
I met a chap the other week who has a great story to tell.
I have asked him to write it all up, and i'll then put it on here.
From what I know so far, (some) Powder was carried out in Bradford, and Chrome in Halifax.
He has told me quite a bit, but it should really come from his hand.

dunno about the bradford bit.
my mates brother worked in the actual factory in CHESTER where the coloured DP'S were done,he had various Firebirds like me
and they 100% guaranteed came from this factory.
I have been into this said factory and spoke eventually to the fella who over 25 years ago did the powder coating for Dave Park.
when he saw my Firebird Freestyler he recognised it straight away, also the guy who was the boss of this factory bitd had a son who seemed to have everything DP did, all the colours and parts and his name was Kevin and my mate reckoned he was a bit hot on freestylin.
could this be Krazy Kevin ???
also if you look very hard on the drawing i mentioned there is some feint writing in pencil on the frame where the gusset around the seatpost is,anyone like to guess what it says, you gotta look hard though :P
-
here you go, its doesn't say anything, its just some lines to show where the gusset bends.
would be good to know if this is the same kevin, it was a popular name in the 80's :LolLolLolLol:
-
So if my frame has no frame # how do i know what decals it should have on ? :-\
-
i would say it the black and gold firebird decals or the red with the thin black out line. is it chrome or white?
on my chrome freestyler you can see where the old decals use to be. so this told me what it had from new.
steve
-
Its this one ;)
Think it may have to be red ones ! ;D
Ive given it a good polish when i 1st bought it and there wasnt any outlines of decals
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/v649/haro_master1985/CIMG0094-1.jpg)
-
ok, its in my gallery too, i would put the red decals on it.
it would be good to find out if the frames with no numbers had the black and gold decals and the frames with the very early number say up to 500 had the red decals
-
I had a white one with no frame number that came with red decals as new.
-
did anyone ever have a freestyler with the black and gold decals fitted? may have been the red ones from the time they went on sale.
-
thinking about decals i just noticed that on some of the firbird freestylers the decals on the forks is on either way, one of mine that is 100% original has the firebird starting with the f at the top of the forks :P
-
hows the dp cominmg on cozz? i think its just down to who was fitting them in the factory, some of the adverts i have you can see they are fitted both ways.
-
My pre frame number chrome dp back in the day had the gold and black decals with just firebird on,then i had a pre frame no white one and that had black and gold ones on too,but my mate had a early chrome one at the same time but that one had the red ones on?? all the frames were brand new at the time.so i have no idea on the change point.if you use bmx action bike as a guide you see that the dp adverts still have the early decals for many months evan though the red decals were fitted to the newew frames(if that makes any sense)
-
hows the dp cominmg on cozz? i think its just down to who was fitting them in the factory, some of the adverts i have you can see they are fitted both ways.
Slowly mate :P i am waiting for some pedals and a nos seat straight outta Texas USA that the seller can't find, my Firebird's gonna look Amazing though when it all comes together :daumenhoch:
-
DINODOG did you and your mate buy the dp's from the same shop? theres no telling what the did or when they changed the decals, if you spoke to 2 different people from the factory now they would both tell you something different.

Yes me and my mates frame sets came from the same bike shop in rugby, but my first one was chrome with early decals, and my mates was chrome with the red decals both bought within three weeks of each other in early 1984?.I snapped my chrome one later that year(by this stage all the dps around my way had the red decals) The frame was sent back to the factory(under warrenty) and it took around two months for a replacement,a white one(they said they couldn`t get any chrome ones???)with the early decals on??'this is how i have made mine look now white with the early decals??any help?

mine is a firebird freestyler, i'm sure i have posted a picture of it on here somewhere. i got
if off an old work mate for £30. it had been in his back garden for 15 years and had to
cut it out of the bush. he got it new from o.t cycles in dartford/kent. it also has the ladder bars.
-
funny how theres been 4 on ebay in about a week :P
i think the gl is a real find though, where else can you find a nos firebird let alone a gl, and if it doesn't need a resto it means the original finish is still going to be there which is nice as i know the bloke who powdered it new.
i saw the gl and it stopped me going for the yellow one but all i really wanted was the frame+ forks and bars, the rest would have been soon got rid of

i was holding this NOS frame set at MK, it does have a few small marks on it, some of the paint has come off on the edges of the drop out. also some marks around top of the forks and the head tube as it hasn't had a head set fitted and the frame has been tied together for a few years.
still a very god frame set, nice to see the cable guides still fitted.

steve you shouldn't have let go :P
i'm amazed there is still one left nos, the last one i remember was in a bike shop on the wirral and yes i have checked to see if it was still there, that one was a pink gl and the bike shop couldn't sell it, i bet it would sell now though :coolsmiley:

i would have liked that frame set, but i have one being repaired which i got very cheap. sounds funny but i was more interested in the cables than i was in the frame.
