Title: twin pinch flights.... clicking
Post by: othomas2 on April 15, 2008, 09:57 PM
I wondered if anyone could help... I have a clicking crank on a particular part of the rotation... sealed bearing type.

Anyone know how I may rectify this... ? I wondered is it was because there weren't enough washers so purchased them and it's the same.

No big deal I just get really annoyed by this sorta thing, wondered if there may be an obvious remedy ?

thanks
Owen

Not had a problem with clicking, but creaking. Turned out to be the pedals :idiot2:

Yeah hard to explain the noise... I just think for the money etc... & the fact they're new they should be pretty noiseless..

will try some new pedals to make sure it's not that.

cheers

I had this problem and it did indeed turn out to be the pedals  :idiot2: Normally on the down stroke, see if you can borrow some to test before buying new ones though but its probably the pedals  :daumenhoch:

if they not clicking with the chain off it may be the links catchin the teeth due the float of the freewheel knocking the chain outa line during rotation, does that make sense?

Yeah they have...  I bought them from a fellow radster... but I hear the best place to get them from is US ebay... they'll cost you about £ 70-80.

confirm the bolt is tight that holds the sprocket to the crank arm. if it is a bit loose the sprocket will "adjust" itself during the rotation which can click.

I've tried new pedals... not them.

tightened everything up... given the chain some extra give... not that either

I'm thinkin' possibly it's the freewheel...

In what way is it tightening up?

The rotation of the pedal is tightening the internal nut so it no spinning smoothly... I've experienced the same issues with other pedals in the past... these are Shimano DX.

I've had the socket set out and tightened it up again leaving the bearings to roll freely.

Wouldn't surprise me if it locks up again though.  ::)

I assume you have dismantled the pedals at some point for a spindlectomy. I find it's hard to get the lock nut to lock because you can't hold the cone nut tight. Try loosening the cone nut off 1/4 turn so that there is a small amount of play, then try tightening up the lock nut really tight. Hopefully they will lock together, but the cone nut will probably turn slightly taking up the slack. Yu could also try locktight or similar thread locking compound.

Thanks for that, that's exactly what I did... and it has had a spindlectomy..  :daumenhoch:

With a bit of luck it will stay in place... if not I'll give the locktight a go... :)

thanks you bike doctor... ;)

cheers
