Title: INTERACT BURNLEY SKATEPARK CLOSING
Post by: hunterdubber on May 10, 2008, 11:56 AM
Just got some really bad news from Mark( Betty swallocks )

that Interact is closing

I knew it was on the cards as Sally ( the owner ) has set up another  park in Newcastle
and hasn't seemed to be interested in in the Burnley park
When the shop closed too wasn't a good sign  :(

Anyone else heard any news  ?

Funny the let me renew my feckin Membership last week ,  :knuppel2:

 ;D

Always sad to hear of a park closing down.  I've not been up there yet but everyone seems to like the park. Apart from crazycraig obviously  ;D

Whats the deal, the owners just not bothered, or is it loosing money?

i think there the 3rd or 4th person to run it, what a waste of that bowl

The owners definately not bothered  :yahoo_silent:

Never been accomodating

No cafe run so a major loss of income there

Anybody who's been will tell you the potential was never met

Great Great park , not so great management  :'(

I basically went every week for the past 2 years until recently

It will be missed  :'(

It doesn't look like somebody else will be taking it over ,
as they are removing ramps already  :-\

Post by: QUADROPHENIA on May 10, 2008, 12:20 PM

that bowl was 25k alone, got 2 loads of ply from there for the barn as a mate built it.
Title: Re: INTERACT BURNLEY SKATEPARK CLOSING
Post by: lodge on May 10, 2008, 01:33 PM
Thats a real shame as i think the parks really good especially the bowl. I like the fact all the flat bottom in the park is wood which is more forgiving when you bail.

Mind you i reckon alot of people dont go there purely because of that bint, when i went last weekend there was a young kid in front of me at the hatch, her words to him were "spit it out i'm not a mind reader" hardly surprising if that kid never goes back is it.

Anyone got any info on the newcastle park she's involved with as thats way nearer for me?

I wonder if the lease has just expired and they've decided not to renew?  One things for sure, if her attitude is as stinky as it seems to be then they're always gonna struggle.

Aye....it's sad news alright!!!

But after the shop was closed and when me and Steve Macky was there last week they were fooking about with things so I'm not surprised. But is there any wonder she's never made any money with a fooking attitude like she has, she's a miserable fooking plankton eating gobshite! It's not just her either, there all as fooking stupid. Me and Steve asked for a coffee after we'd been riding and they looked at us like we'd just pinched a loaf off on to some bread and gave them a sh1t sandwich each.

That place could be so much more, it tells you how good it is when I'm prepared to do a 140 mile round trip to ride it and Macky does a 200 mile round trip to ride there so I think that tells you how good the place is. The main bowl is awesome, the street sections good but good be better for bikes as it's a bit tight. But the whole reason the place has never made any money is because it's been run wrong. There's a huge space for the cafe but they do fook all with it, they've no idea. I'll miss the park but there's one thing for sure I won't that fat fooking gobby cnut! I hope she does go up to Newcastle because if she behaves like she normally does the geordies will just tell her to fook off and boil her head!

Daz.  :(

I went up there last year when I really didn't have a clue- thought it was a GREAT park.... just a real shame about the nobs that run it- I've encountered some rude and ignorant people in my life but they were pretty special....

If its available for purchase might be worth while looking into it???

there are quite a few amazing buildings in blackburn/darwen where we could do this shit over 3 or 4 floors. i'm talking 10 story abbandoned mills and they are massive. If this bmx malarky hardly breaks even then more sould be done over several floors to make some brass. a gym. indoor footy, bar, fooking budget clothing outlet, who cares as long as it's a viable business.

Just buy 1 frame per week instead of 10, that should give you about 2 gwand a week to throw down the gizzard of a skatepark  :LolLolLolLol:

I would love a pop at it but unlike the KLF/K foundation, have no desire to burn a shit load of money in a remote and barren wasteland  :D

After todays visit it looks like its coming to an end....  :(

The cafe is now closed, the mini ramp behind the vert wall in the beginners section has gone, rendering that section useless....  :(

Staff say it'll be kept open as long as poss but will close its doors sometime this summer, anyone fancy taking it on the rent/rates are 5.5k per month.....  unsurprisingly its run at a loss since opening!

As much as i love the place i wouldnt take it on at that money...  :D

And fook me it was hot in there today.... ive lost half a stone in sweat!

i'm interested...timings all wrong though for my partners in crime.

5.5k might be bullshit..but rates would be at about 35/40p in the pound, but could probably reduce that right down with a few tricks.

so say 3.5k a month in rent, then  another 1.5k in rates...another grand in lectric...

6k a month aint that bad given its size.

could turn it around in 6 months easy, run it for 2/3 years and punt it on for a princely sum.

so without taking any wages, your minimum investment would be about 30k....then rebuild cost and install of shops/stock etc..

another 20k say?

so comfrotably, all you would need is 50k up front, big balls and a few quid to live on until you get some positive cashflow.

p.s dubber, i am not minted, well not yet anyway :D

I reckon if done right it could self fund and maybe even make a small return.

Lets face it, them who run it now are fooking useless. How they have ever expected to make anything is beyond me. Wrong attitude, no business plan, etc. etc. I could go on but I won't.

Fees are too low for a start, £5 for your yearly membership is a waste of time. I'm sure most people would be happy to pay at least £20 for a yearly membership on top of your session fee. I certainly would if that miserable cow wasn't there.

The park is quality, it just needs running right. More events would help too, it could be used for one of the rounds of the Old School Freestyle Series.  ;)

So is anyone gonna go for this......??

that park could be Amazing with the right ppl behind it...

£20 per year membership fee is what most parks charge anyway...

get a decent caff goin in there, a shop...

wasnt there gonna be trails there at one point too...

a change of management is all that gaff needs.....

circumstances are not right..takes a lot of balls...all of your time and significant dollop of dosh.

i could be interested but i am busy with my phone company...

needs to be a business desicsion, not an emotive one....

and if i cant be there, then unless i can find someone with a few quid and a genuine desire to work hard and earn a living, then its not an investment for me. :-\

Post by: TwoBobRob on May 13, 2008, 11:14 PM
If that figure of 5.5k for monthly rent and rates is true and accurate, then don't bother. You simply cannot sell enough visits to make money. Lets say you figure a combined spend of £10 per person  (£5 admission and another £5 in the cafe/shop), then obviously, you need 550 visits per month just to pay the rent and rates.  Based on a 31 day month, thats around 18 visits per day, every day.....

Now, 18 doesn't sound like very much I know, but its actually a massive mean average figure for a skatepark in this country.

Off the top of my head without really thinking about it, I'd say you'd need to either double the amount of visits, or double the spend per capita, or any combination of the two.  That would yeald 11k a month, and from that with everything paid, there might be a wage in it.

Corporate sponsorship or charitable donation is really the only way to keep a park alive in this country.

In answer to Evamedias question - do any parks make money in this country - I'd say that the only one that did without any assistance, sponsorship etc would have been sk8&ride in Bristol.   Now known as Motion, it started life as two businesses with the owners putting equal weight to both sides.  The two sides were the park, and a licensed bar/restaurant.

Midschoolers will tell you, it was a cool place with really nice owners. Some cracking sessions and jams to be had there, along with a beer and a bloody good meal.

It is my belief that it was sold as a going concern, with the two owners moving on in life quite nicely.

Of course, there is another way...

If you're a rich businessman and you need a tax loss, open a park and simply nick the cash out of it.

Is lottery funding not available for this type of scenario.
Title: Re: INTERACT BURNLEY SKATEPARK CLOSING
Post by: TwoBobRob on May 14, 2008, 05:15 PM
There is lottery funding available. It's one of the reasons why there's a good number of skateparks set up as registered charities.

However........

Historically, we ain't the most popular folk with the Lottery bigwigs   :(

The figures we ask for are minute in comparison with funding given to the arts, dance and other worthy causes  ::)   yet we struggle to see a penny.

There used to be a thing called Sportsmatch.  I don't know if it still exsists or not, but it was a govenment funded scheme whereby every pound raised by private fundraising would be matched with another pound from the government.  That was more successful for a fair few parks.

But the real problem remains.  Once you've built your park, you've got to keep the bloody thing open.....
