some great shots there stumpy. Lovin that hip hanging lookback.
So come on, when you and Andy did the double airs, who went over and who went under?
(I remember Andy and the Banbury/Oxford crew going that day but I couldnt make it)
-
Hey Alex, still kicking myself for not gettin up to the old fools bash the other week, I only live ten mins from Rom! No excuse i know,
Double Airs as i recall Andy went right to left over, an i went left to right under, but we did also try other way.
I've got some pics doing double airs with someone else, but got to scan them.
-
stumpy, you (like me) need to get to rom more often bro.
those old pics are cool, and i watched you last yr at the rom jam thinking....of fook, he aint been here in yrs, hes gonna die, then you pulled a few double smooth airs.....proper old school styley.....

Cheers Daz, thats from bout '84 i think.

The style is just so old school, in fact I'll tell you how good it is, you look like Dominguez (but obviously you turn the other way) and you can't get a much higher a compliment than that mate.
Top draw! :daumenhoch:
-
stumps, quality pics mate, but HOW HIGH IS YOUR SEAT POST ;D :-\
mate i used to run mine as high as well :D
-
:LolLolLolLol:Dan your right , was pretty high back then, but truth be known, i took inspiration from you an pat back in then! You were legends, when i first moved to Chadwell Heath and statred going rom, every one said have you seen Pat an Danny ride! An wow, you boys rocked that park.
Daz, that compliment meant so much as i didn't get much regonition back then, here's another few pics keeping with the flava of the thread, and one to honor the King.. Mike D.

Cheers Steve, have you any pics from Rom?

Stumpy those look backs are superb proper hip hanging stylee, totally different tecnique to the way peeps do them nowa days.
Most people now seem to do them opposite, I wonder if that's why.
I started learning them opposite yesterday, got the bars to about 160 degrees. Shame I didn't try them opposite 20 odd years ago, I might have them by now.
-
Couldn't agree with Steve more Stumpy, I said the first lot were cool but that first pic of the second lot you posted (above the MD pic) is even better. Awesome style fella!
The only things that scares me though is no helmet, no pads at all and shorts in a concrete bowl......but we were indestructible back then weren't we - or so we thought ::)
Daz. :daumenhoch:
-
Cheers Steve, have you any pics from Rom?
Nah only ever rode Rom once bitd I remember it well as it was the day after the Holeshot comp in 84 Sue Jarvis took the whole ammaco team there it was cool to see the racers riding Rom.

Not sure. i wonder if it something to do with the way n/s riders carve there airs as i remember lookbacks being
easier if you allyooped a bit.
Not as clicked as stumpy's and not rom but lookback relevant.

-
Cool pic Steve, I found it eaiser when alleyoop'd. Also rolling cranks back a bit helped to get hung out to the side.
-
It was the same with turn downs, I always thought they were easier if you alleyoop'd them as well, you could get more clicked/further round.
Daz.

-
Billy - that is the 'ORRC' Original Ripping Romford Crew - you lot were the inspiration for Ralph, Tony and me. Love the white wall tires...and Marco has the big knobbly track ties. keen hell...good times.
That last pic of the drop ins....the bloke w/ the ? mark, is that Paul Wright????, looks like him and I heard he used to ride w/ you lot back in the early day and was a bit of a ripper.

superbikedan 83 :)

Dan - that's a corker over the hip :daumenhoch:
-
Wicked air over the hip Dan, lovin that. An Bill, the one of Marco in the same spot, but going the other way, thats a mad line, lovin it. Like Damon said, you guys were the inspiration for me back in the day, made me give up racing, spent every weekend at Rom, plus some evenings, funny how riding home from school always took a detour down upper Rainham Road :daumenhoch:

There is some superb pics and memories in this thread, well done guys. An Stumpy, sort yourself out mate and get riding again. I have spent 2 years trying to convince SBD to ride again and all I managed to get out of him was a lap of Daggers :buck2:
-
Ha ha, will do Ratty, just got so much on at the moment, have almost got my old school rides built, then gonna get me a new school ride.
This is what i've been upto over the winter.

Some amazing pics there.
Stumpy was mental last year at Rom jam. I was sitting next to him on the bank as the highest air comp started. He was telling me the last time he rode there was about 18 years ago. Anyway, we started watching the comp and this bloke started to air it. I said to Stumpy, that guy looks like you. I looked round and he had gone and had entered the comp and I hadn't even realised he went. :LolLolLolLol:
-
Ha ha, Trev i had to do something, if i'd stayed sitting i would've been even more sunburnt!! Only shade i got was when i put that full face lid on. :LolLolLolLol:
-
Any pics Daz?
I haven't mate no.....I've barely got any photos left of me from bitd. I've got a couple of me a Dave Slade at Southsea and some really early ones from Newquay and the Ford Road Shows and that's about it. Some lost at my Mams, loads destroyed in a fire, I'm trying to dig some up from old mates but with little success. I had a message from James Hudson a little while back saying he was gonna dig a load out so they might be some from riding at his place but I'm guessing. I had some good ones from one of the early comps at Alfreton that my brother took but god knows where they are as me and my Bro aren't exactly close.
The days before digital I'm afraid, now you just back everything up and "hey presto". Negatives aren't as easy to save!
By the way...that pic of Lee Hook R.I.P. is one of my all time favourite pics from Rom. My other, which I've not seen since the 80's was a pic off Jess D (I think it was JD) doing a massive bone air in the P Bowl and his back wheel is nearly touching the green lamp post behind the bowl. Love to see that again.
Keep the Performance Bowl pics coming fellas....great pics!
Daz.

I fookin love RoM pics, i can almost smell the pot noodles.
I can feel the sun on my back whilst ridin back to Romford station on those awesome summer............................................... ya know!
Sean. :daumenhoch:
-
Fook me Sean...Billy Chaplin could get some air couldn't he mate!
-
Yeh mate he could, he was one rad mofo indeed.
I have not seen him since i started riding again, i would like to get him back on a bike but its unlikely. He leads a different life to most of us, he has to dissapear sharpish sometimes........if ya know what i mean ;) He's like the scarlet pimpenel..........Mr Elusive!
He once beat one of the local pro's at an improvised height comp, (i remember 9ft being mentioned) but for the life of me i can't remember who :tickedoff:
Hope to see ya soon Daz :daumenhoch:
-
Hope to see ya soon Daz
I'll be down soon dude...
It does tickle me though that he's wearing elbow pads but no fooking helmet! Obviously your elbows are much more important than your head. We've all done it though back them, wouldn't dream of doing it now!
Quality pics then, I love that pic of Lee Hook too, some height there too.
-
Yeh i had the pleasure of riding with Lee a good few times. We lived about 5 miles from each other so we used to bump into each other at various riding spots
In fact i was probably there when that pic was taken cos thats two of my other old pals in the background (Sean and Dave) sitting there in awe!
He had a very individual style did Lee, arms out in a "chicken style" i used to call it ;D He was a good lad, sadly missed. :'(
Try and keep the last couple of saturdays in July (1 or the other) free in your diary mate. ;) All will be revealed at a later date? :-X

That's Ted on the right, he would alternate between rollerskates and boards.
