I had a great day today.  I had been looking forward to racing at Herne Bay for a long time and the track didnt disappoint one little bit.  There was some great racing today, especially the 40+ cruiser b final, well done Mike :4_17_5:

I wish I lived a bit closer as I cant wait to ride that track again

What rocked
The weather
So many Kent riders at a regional, the futures good
Dave Glendower winning a moto, gave it the kitchen sink treatment
Mike Wong winning his final after surviving a lot of carnage around him , couldnt have happened to a nicer bloke!
Zippys crash in the first moto, but he still got up smiling, again couldnt have happened to a ni..... oh i'm sorry
Jazzyje winning a race and riding well all afternoon
The organisation of the afternoon and just how many officials were on hand this afternoon. count the high - vises

What sucked
Not much really, hearing that an official got a bit of verbals in the food queue wasnt nice to hear.
Trying to keep the kids off the track when the track is closed, but I suppose its only because they are keen.
pre race injuries robbing everyone of seeing Mike Pinnock and Dan Whyte in action
Having to leave ... a day I defiateley didnt want to end

What a brilliant day.  Can't think of a nicer place to plant a BMX track, right in the middle of the Great British countryside with the beach only a short drive away as well (we should make a seaside weekend of it for the Southern Champs).

Nice to see my Sheffield bretheren Hudu again.  It's been a while.  You should be proud of that track.  So fast, flowing and fun to ride.  Everyone loves it.

Also some fast and furious racing.  So many good finals don't know where to start.

Old school was a joy to watch today.  Zippy, Paul Coleman and Gary Porter gave it their all and I think the lead changed at every berm.  Great tactics by Gary to sneak the win from Zippy and Paul.

Great to see Russ Parsons christen the new track with an A-final win.  Well deserved for one of the driving forces behind this track happening.  Roy Binks has upped his game as well.  Must be a great feeling to race on a track you guys made happen.

Gotta give props to Dave Glendower for racing two classes and making A-final in old school and getting second in cruiser B final.

Biggest thanks go to Spillers and Bill Stupp for deciding to have a cuddle in the second berm  ;) and to Jason Harvey for deciding the 4th straight was the perfect place to try a back flip.  I've never even won a moto at a regional before so that B-final win will keep me smiling for a long time.  Thanks for the props guys  :daumenhoch:

Wish we could race Herne Bay every week.  Such a good track and peaceful/relaxing setting.

Hope your elbow heals in time for Mansfield, Phil.  40+ wouldn't be the same without the most efficient man in BMX on the gate (we'll work out your secret one day as to how you always place high whilst making it look like you aren't even trying - it's gotta be something to do with those long legs!).

Whar rocked.

Kent finally getting a track to replace the legend that was Buckmore Park.
Hudu, your track building was awesome, not many new tracks that get close to making it good for everyone, but Herne Bay did :4_17_5:

A well oiled, smooth and professional team behind the scenes :daumenhoch:
The burger van poached from BADBMX, his 1/4 pounders rule.
Zippy hitting the dirt (I would say only joking Si, but no >:D)
The awesome action in the berms, so many hi-low moves it was hard to keep track :daumenhoch:
Mike Wongs long overdue final win

What Sucked
Gary72 getting robbed of the OSS A final win
My performance

and the long walk round the outside of the track

Other than that, congratulations guys, today will be remembered for a long time  :4_17_5:  :4_17_5:

What Rocked

what they said....  seriously though what an amazing day - hitting the dirt and bruising my arse isnt going to alter the fact that i had a blast... oh and to gate on a bike that actually had room to move forward did help..  thanks to all the kind words about the build, ill post it in Bike of the month now....  no reason why a bike that gets ridden shouldnt win is there??

Congrats Mike, I think everyone agrees that you deserved that win...  I didnt see all of Billy's races but he seemed to spend most of them sitting down on some part of the track....

What sucked

again pretty much all been said - except i scratched a pedal  :LolLolLolLol: :LolLolLolLol:
the last but one berm that decided it didnt like my front wheel and slid me out and over the bars...

Till Hersden then.... if the weather is like this...   bring it on...

Gary72 getting robbed of the OSS A final win

 :wtf:

Why?

they gave it to Zippy even though everyone seemed to think (including Zippy) gary won it.   all three lino's were adamant...  so no appeal.

how they can judge a line call when they arent even standing in line with the finish line amazes me...

Gary72 getting robbed of the OSS A final win

 :wtf:

Why?

I watched this race like a hawk, 1 of the best of the day and no disrespect to Zippy but Gary had it easily by at least 1/2 a wheel, dont know wtf was going on at the finish but it was clear to everyone including zipps that Gary got the 1st
Title: Re: summer regional round 3 hernebay
Post by: dialledbikes on May 11, 2008, 10:19 PM
That's a shame the old school A-final ended in controversy as that was one of the races of the day for me.  But fair play to Gary for being sporting and not appealing, and to Zippy for acknowledging Gary won it.

I was over the other side of the track and it seemed quite clear Gary took the win.
Title: Re: summer regional round 3 hernebay
Post by: billstup on May 11, 2008, 10:25 PM
Yep I thought that Gary had won it too  :(

Great day again, and although I crashed a couple of times the elbow pads and body armour did their job and I came away unscaved (sp) and I only decided to put it on at the last minute  :idiot2:

Sorry for stacking in front of you though Spillers, but perhaps you shouldn`t have been so close  :2funny:

Racing is full of close or dubious calls, some go against you and some go for you. I've had one go against me and for me this year already. I guess we'll all find ourselves in that position at some point.

Arriving late so no gate practice or laps, walked across the track and looked at it, (still worn 3 MOTO'S and Final ), Traffic on the way home.

Was told by someone, I could not appeal as it was a unanimous decison by all 3 line judges(Yes I know it is a hard job)

Nice one Alan, I know it was a close one, but there was 4 of us watching it at close distance. Not sure why they changed their minds as Gary never raised a complaint.

Alan, can you pm me the OS results please as I forgot to pick them up :daumenhoch:

It was a close call, but Gary definitely crossed the line first.

In fact he rode a blinder coming from back in third place to take the win.  Not bad for someone who just turned up 5 mins before racing started, and didnt even have a practice lap.

Going back to my second home, seeing the crew, seeing it all come together.

Seeing my baby the track - was back to roots - 5 different leaders in one race, moves, swoops, carnage and pure BMX.

Russ taking masters. Great race. Jay Lewis is just so fast.

Seeing all my old classmates - Miles, Warlock, Mike W etc etc

Mikes win. Couldn't happen to a nicer bloke.

Sunshine.

People.

Novices doing what I did nearly 30 years ago and getting on that first gate.

Meeting lots of RADsters.

Getting the race bug again - I'm off to Preston for gates tomorrow.  :uglystupid2:

After crashing in the first race I wasn't sure I would even get to the A final. I had to win the secon race and could then afford to take it easy in the third so as to save energy. :LolLolLolLol:

However the fact remains that was probably one of the best old school races yet in the series to date and three of us were swapping the lead at every corner.

Still buzzing after Sunday's meeting but thought I should add my two-pennorth to what's already been said.  I had serious reservations about holding a Regional so soon after officially opening but because of availability of free dates we had little choice.  That we got through the day is all credit to all the people who pulled together to make it happen.

Firstly the biggest thanks must go to Phil 'Hudu' Charnley who designed and built the track.  It's all been said before on here but he's created a masterpiece to be proud of.  And aiding him has been the local guys primarily Russ Parsons, Olly Small, Steve Bodey and Roy Binks with support from their mates too.  The time and effort that Russ in particular has put into this meeting and the Opening event last week has been huge and without him things would not have gone as smoothly as they did.  The tweaks to the track made on Friday/Saturday might not have been too obvious but made things so much nicer for everyone, young and old, and, that no-one was seriously hurt, despite the carnage, is testiment to those changes working and the track preparation - big shout out to the local Fire Brigade for their help on Friday too.

On the day, the SOUTH Region team were hugely supportive and without them it just couldn't have happened.  Lin 'I'm retired from BMX' Gunner was the hub of a well oiled (sun-cream I hasten to add) Registration Team who dealt with a larger than expected turnout of riders including quite a few new faces.  White Star Medical were on hand to give their support which thankfully wasn't required to any great extent and for which I thank them on the Club's behalf.  GROOVE RACING chose our meeting to be at rather than Mansfield and for that we are grateful to Mark Seaman for making the choice in our favour.

Financially the Club has received funding from Awards for All and local company Pfizer Ltd. and our logo'd high-viz presence was courtesy of Stevehaleimages.com who was trackside with his camera.  And where would we have been without the Herne & Broomfield Parish Council who put their faith in the Club by funding the track build and area redevelopment in association with Deacons Landscaping.  The support we have had from the Parish Council has been nothing short of refreshing after some of the negativity I have experienced in the past at other tracks.

And finally (will I ever finish??) I thank everyone who turned up to race and watch and who have put their thoughts into words in this thread and the others on BMX Talk.  Apart from Ratty moaning about the "long walk" round the track (lose some weight and get into training you ....(censored) ... ) there's been nothing but praise for the track, the meeting and the organisation.  From my point of view all I can say is "Thank you".  Humps

And we thank you Humps.... Top day - Top Job!

I honestly think the track is of National standard - is the team up for it? would it be possible - it would be nice to actually have a southern National!   Im told there is plenty of camp sites in the area....  what would stop it in your mind?

"Thank you" again for building such a great track only an hour away from us  :daumenhoch: and yes, I also thought the day was very well organised.

As said previously, Chloe and Nicholas love the track and are already asking if they can spend some days at the track during the school holidays  :)

Am I right in thinking the track will be open all the time now humps or will the gates be locked when the club isnt there?

Sharon, the track is open 24/7 though the gates to the car park are locked.  You can still park on the approach road though.

Crooch, my standard answer would be "we don't do Nationals" but that's a standing joke on BMX Talk.  No reason why we couldn't do a Nat. as long as we brought in toilet/showers and gained the use of one of the neighbouring fields for additional parking and camping.  Not impossible so watch this space.  Humps

I agree with all above 'top track', contains something for everyone. I would kill for that to practice on...what kind of budget do you need for a track like that ?

As for a national , Humps is right the parking needs a bit of jiggery pokery and the line up to the pens and exit from the finish...but all i think must be 'do-able'.
Also the first 90 degree and certainly the first 180 degree corner may struggle to cope with 8 elite riders going at it but  i would be more than  happy to be proved wrong. :)

Agree with you Keith ref the arguement going on right next to us
i tried to blank it out and just concentrate but it ruined my start
as well, as it was an older rider he should have had more respect
for us.

It annoys me when this happens, when I do call up at Daggers I do try and get them to shut up when on the start hill, its hard work though trying to keep them quiet.
What with you guys, and Flem at Cheddar perhaps the start hill officials should be more aware of this

Think Flem suffered a bit worse than us as his was a final at a national & ours was just a moto at a regional, still shouldnt happen though!!!  >:( >:(

Hi Keith (please check your PMs).

Question to everyone - do you think they should wait until the last person from previous race has crossed the line until they start the next one to stop this happening again in future?

Yes to Mikes question and Keith making the A in our region
in 40+ is prob on par with a National so those motos are
important.

This wasnt related to the time our moto was started in relation to the last one finishing at all.

Starting to get blown up into something it never was though, i'm sure there was no bad intention in it from the person concerned & i'd prefer to just move on from it.

Being a father myself i'd prob shout a bit if i thought something unfair happened to one of my kids on the track.

Gutted i cant make the next national, good luck to everyone.   :)

In an ideal world where racing started early then agree Mike but we had a slight delay and decided to move things along.  It seemed to work and we finished by 5:10 I think, which is acceptable.  Too many riders in too many classes seems to be the problem of the SOUTH Region's current success.  When you consider that at the inter-Regional at Mansfield there were less than 250 riders then dealing with 184 is pushing the limits.  Maybe we should be looking at alternatives although I think a bit of quiet as respect for riders on the gate is not too much to ask although a close finishing previous moto is always going to be a distraction.

The question of the noise at the Start Hill is being looked into and maybe it's a Herne Bay issue we need to address for next time, maybe cordon off the area at the side of the gate to avoid public/spectators/other riders standing too close.  Humps

Its not just a Herne Bay thing Humps, it happens at most tracks, I think the call up person nees to take charge of it, my personal pet hate is riders waiting for their moto getting too close to the guys on the gate. At least you dont have that problem at the Bay.  :daumenhoch:

Perhaps pre registeration might help smooth things along for registeration, as data inputting seems to be the bottle neck at most events :daumenhoch:

Perhaps the solution is whoever is on the mic giving the crowd a "sssshhhhhhhhhhhh" one the sequence has started.
