When all the headset parts/stem and any spacers are set up on the forks there should be a gap of about 4mm from the stem to fork top (forks finishing 4mm below stem) put the top cap on and tighten the top cap bolt first to pull everything together then tighten the stem
 :) DINGO :)

tried that, put a spacer in below the stem, kept the stem loose as i tightened top cap.  smash! smash! smash!
oh well! all too late now!

not sure how chris kings work, but I had to replace my headset a few weeks back, because I had overtightened and killed the bearings :uglystupid2:

you can't get any netter than a Chris King!  fact!  once you've got it set up right, i bet you'll never need to touch it!  i had one on my MTB for 8 years and never needed to touch it once!

DUNIT! thanks guys! what was happening is the star thingy in side the forks was just slipping up,i.e. not gripping. so i took the shite chris king star thingy out and replaced with the one out of the old headset and bobs your uncle, problem solved, dont know why it wouldnt grip and it didnt stay around to find out, flung it down the street, just goes to show, cheap headsets are not always crap, lesson learnt :smitten:

Don't king headsets use a 'double' SFN?

I find it weird one of those slipped, you didn't get it off ebay from China did you???
