Title: Help: how do I clean really old tyres?
Post by: JT71 on May 31, 2008, 08:39 AM
what's the best way. these are just minging from storage, NOS, but really dirty.

there's grime and then there's that white powder that was on them when new and that's gone sticky.

Whenever i get new (old) tyres i fit them to an old rim then blast the white release powder off with my jet wash  :daumenhoch:
works a treat  ;)

I had some tyres recently that had a few whizzes around mk so were dusty. Washed them but that didn't really work, still looked dusty. Found a miracle cure - dashboard shine, made them look brand new and a deep black colour again. Just checked it's name, CarPlan Flash Dash.  Tried it on some 25 year old GT tyres too, worked a treat on the tread for them. ;)

Yeah... like Mark said Dashboard stuff or auto tyre black.
You can re-vitalise skinwalls too with hand cream/moisturiser. Rub it inside and out and the walls will stay nice and supple. Dried up skinwalls can be gradually brought back to life this way too  :daumenhoch:

what about perished tyres as my slightly used comp 3 are cracking around all the treads
