I'm sure it will be sold.... So many people will be chucking lots of money at him. It will really test him as I'm sure there will be some obscene offers.
-
yep lots of loot will be offered so hope he does do a good job of it if he restores it.
i would offer a pretty packet for it.
-

...was it Fine Fare or Hintons that sold them? ;D
...must admit, never heard of 'em, Haro Master/Torker Freestylist rip off? fill me in please ???
-
I'm sure there wouldn't be such a fuss if Neil was still with us but it is quite a find!
Not sure about the welds though!
-
I'm pretty sure it was Bernie Vincent that made them.
Andy R told me they only made about 150 of them. Neil probably broke a lot of them.
I imagine they would have been as strong (or weak) as the Vincent Air Zone, and there aren't many of them left either.
-
The looptail one is even rarer. ;D
-

There has to more out there, at the back of someone's garage or shed... or tucked away in the attic!! ::)

Has the frame got a gyro tab on one side of the head tube???????
-
Dont Know? Doesnt Look Like It
-
i do hope he doesnt get the sand paper out on it.
-
i do hope he doesnt get the sand paper out on it.
:(
-
Imagine if he removes the decals to give it a proper clean
-
All the the frames i remember had a gyro tab on the right hand side of the headtube also the gap between the top tubes and bottom tube where they meet the headtube is much wider on the frame shown.
I am 99% sure Bernie Vincent made all the Holeshot frames, now his welding was far from great but much neater than on the frame shown.
I dont wanna dampen the enthusiasm for this find but had to highlight these points.

Well, he would have gettin' up to this kinda malarky on it...

that's one rare bike
no matter how rare, one always comes along!!
-
i know it's rare.. but it is/was a really sh!tty frame design-wise!!
-
OK Guys all i know is that lad has had since bitd and he bought it from a friend back in the 80's and he paid quite a lot then. I have mailed him for some more info and ill post what he says. Its been in his dads garage gathering rust for the last 20 years and its out now for some nostalgia and a bit of TLC. Not sure what his plans are past that but he may even turn up on here in a bit, i gave him the link. Just hope he doesnt think im a cnut for posting all his news :LolLolLolLol:
-
I fooking love it, jesus Dom where are you finding all of these treasures  I think that's one very very very very rare bike and its worth a mint that's for sure.... :daumenhoch: wouldn't be surprised if Neil Ruffell has been tipped off about it? Wonder what he'd say if he knew one still existed ::)

It's rarer than a rare thing on a rare day in Raresville!

Its A Terrible Shame Really :( :(. How Did He Pass Away? When Did He Pass Away?

I must admit due to all the hype regarding the rarity of these frames i do feel slightly honoured to have seen this one :daumenhoch:

-
Yep... easy mistake... fooking day I've had... :2gunsfiring_v1:
Holeshot is lovely though :4_17_5:
-
i think you'll find that 'ugly welding' is actually brazing. especially if vincent made them.
-
It's only worth what someone would pay...and if the guy will sell.
No doubt a bidding war will ensue.
£500 for the F&F here.
The bars, tuffs etc will get decent money by themselves.
-
Serious question...how much do we think? £500 wouldnt touch the sides would it? Ive only been on here since December and even I know this is a holey (pun fully intended) grail among BMX's.
I know if I found it and the offers were in excess of £1k i'd bite their hand off.
-
Think it'll reach a grand or more due to it being so rare, again, that's if the dude sells...
-
BUT...would you guys actually pay £1k for just the F&F?
It's one thing saying it, another doing it.
My max would be £500 for the F&F - that is what it's worth to me.
No doubt someone will offer more, but that's cool, it's worth more to them.
-

gen1's and VDC's bring 1k and there 10 a penny :2funny: :2funny:
-
But, they are desirable by many...a Holeshot RF1 may well be rare, but to be honest, it's a badly made POS. It just has sentimental value.
-
:) Regardless of what happens, hope it stays in the UK.
-
:) Regardless of what happens, hope it stays in the UK.
I cant see anyone outside the UK wanting it. Its only the UK guys who have a real attachment to Neil. Does anyone in the US even know about Holeshot bikes?
Rare doesnt always mean its worth loads.
-
:) Regardless of what happens, hope it stays in the UK.
It's bound to, I don't think they even hit the radar in the US.
-
i would have thought the prolite was more sought after, who ever had a RF1? if it was sold now i expect it would go big as the first available, second time it comes up for sale the ass would have fell out of it as it aint something new and would have already been done
-
After all this time a Holeshot appears and................... it wasn't worth waiting for.
Although I am happy that has been with the owner for all these years, kudos to him.
Maybe it will grow on me.
-
Smiling like an idiot, looking at that ;D Whether we like it, love it or not that fussed, we'd all liked to have been the one who brought it to the site. Well found Dom, cheers fella.
-
well thats nice very rare frame the only one ive ever seen and as for the value im hoping we dont find out and that the lad keeps it and restores it and bwecomes a valued member of the site .

,
Well said Greg :daumenhoch: thats a real possibility. He certainly knows what he's got and is keen to restore it.
-
Ive seen 2 Hotshot frames. One was when this advert was shot at Mons ramp. They put me in a Holeshot T-shirt and I stood on the platform for some of the photos but I guess they didnt like those ones. The other frame was one that Banbury local Stan had. When they were shooting this add he had a go on Neils bike and really liked it. A few weeks later he bought his own one. Years later it got stolen out of his shed.
(btw, the person in the middle of the platform is Mon. He still has a skateboard shop in oxford. Last night I went to the local ramp and he was down their skating. Still livin the dream! :daumenhoch:)

... we'd all liked to have been the one who brought it to the site...
Ain't that the truth!
As greg said, I truly hope that the guy who owns it does restore it and becomes a valued member on the site too. It's a cracking bike to start with! If he gets his skates on MK08 is only just around the corner.
It's a great great find and one that RAD members, including myself, has been waiting for since it started.
I'm still excited, but now it's found, what next?
The best thing about this hobby is the thrill of the chase, now it's gone for the fabled RF1. Shame in a way, a bit like the NOS Action Zone bars I got recently - been after a pair for ages, now I have them, what next?
I was speaking to Mark J earlier and he summed it up for me: "I think it was the myth that was worth the money not the bike. Maybe the myth's gone now ones been found and for some a bit of an anti-climax?"
-
I think I only ever saw one other than Neil's and Robert's.
I think Vince Gregory (?) down at Southsea might have had one... Maybe Mark Likely can confirm.
I myself would have had one if they had come as a complete, but as a young kid wouldn't have been able to build one up so opted for a complete Skyway instead. I was a Skyway fan because of Neil, and the RF1 came out just before I bought my first real BMX. If Youngs in Lewisham had them in stock and built one up, that's what I would have ridden without a shadow of a doubt.
The RF1 is indeed my dream frame, and so glad that one has finally surfaced. It this were a few years ago when I was flush, I'm sure I would have offered him enough money to want to sell it to me. :daumenhoch:
Although Neil rode different colour frames almost every comp (and usually with spokes), the absolute dream bike for me would be a red RF1 with white tuffs.

Yeah, although a great find (it had to happen sooner or later), it takes away the mystery of the bike....
You mention 'anti-climax', that in a reason is why I don't think this hobby will last 'forever',....I rememebr the exitement of sourcing Hutch Parts for my Trickstar,...and when i completed it, i thought what now? Hmmm, I built a Looptail Ripper, Looptail Floval and Quadange, plus 2 Torkers...., but the Trickstar was the one I got most pleasure from...
I think it's called the 'law of diminishing returns' ! In the end all bikes will have been built, a there will be a bit of a black hole as far as where we go from there...., most F&F's have been done - I guess it could go down the route of the US Guys, ie: Start Building DG's, Nomura's, GJS's (Radman ! ;) :D) etc...., but how many had those BITD, how much do they relate the the UK scene way back..... ? They're come a time where it'll be 'same old, same old....' :(
Not for a log time soon hopefully ! :)
Thanks for posting those pics BTW Dom, good luck to your mate ! looks fab....hope to see it at MK ! 8) :daumenhoch:
now i'm thinking about Nomura's, and GJS Big Tubes.......... ::) hmmm, if only :LolLolLolLol:
-
Well that is a first for me too. If these were made by Vincent I may try out my local road bike shop as the guy who owns it used to export Vincent stuff to Belgium and also import stuff for Faze 3 bitd - who knows he may have taken some os!!
As for the next big find - I can think of one that Ratty would love an ACE - so keep em peeled boys & girls ;)
-
I thought Ratty found an ACE just before I went away.
-
Ohh I didn't know, I have been offsite quite a bit over the last couple of months whilst getting the house fixed up - I'll do a search and see if I can find it
-
GJS Big Tubes.......... ::) hmmm, if only :LolLolLolLol:
now yer talkin :daumenhoch: :smitten: theres 1 or 2 in bmxmuseum and one went on ebay about 18 months ago for $600ish, awesome f/f fookin awesome :daumenhoch:
-
I think Vince Gregory (?) down at Southsea might have had one...
He sure did Trev, here it is

Cool pic Stumpy. You coming to Rom Jam next month?

Yeah for sure, when is it? Still ain't got a bike though.
-
Yeah for sure, when is it? Still ain't got a bike though.
Sunday 13th July.
Awesome Holeshot RF1, to get the thread back on track..... ;)
-
I'm glad one has finally shown up and I'm so pleased to have seen a pic of one that has survived, but for me "look but dont touch" is as far as I'd go, I dont actually like the look of it and I dont like buying things just because its rare.. I'm sure it would fetch well over £1k in the right situation though... oh and those decals are easy to repro in case any potential restorer wants to strip it ;)
-
so whats next. :LolLolLolLol:
-
i wouldn't be interested in it just because it was rare. i'd be interested because Neil rode one.
The same way I react everytime i see an orange street beat.
-
Vince Gregory, pleased his name came up as i remember he rode a chrome RF1 with black tuffs at several BFA comps, been trying to remember his name for the last few days.
I remember neil running a red, light blue and a orange RF1 all with white rims, they were all good looking bikes for that era IMO.
Robert ran a green one with chrome rims.
-

can whoever buys it please build it up with the correct parts as a tribute to the legend that was, neil ruffell R.I.P.
-
and if it gets parted out before it gets built can i have dib dobs on the handlebars as they are just some cheap jobs but they would suit my bike :-\ ::)
-
..got a green HOLESHOT sticker from the holeshot comp 85/86? ..is that rare?
thought not :idiot2:
nice find and nice frame though, remember seeing neil ride one bitd. What did they retail for back then?
-
If any 1 wants to know the owners of this bike and its history i am the man as head of the display team which 1 of the lads brought it out of the woodwork!!!!!!!!!!!!!! All those years ago when it was new!!!!!!!!!!!! ingylevi my bike is on here to and i rode a prolite craig cambell ...

I saw a bike like very much like that down my local dump about 15 months ago. I thought it was a POS. ???
-
never mind bike of the year ,this would have to go in bike of the decade :4_17_5:
like everybody else can't wait for the one to be have a bit of resto on it and built up :smitten:
-
Is anyone able to recall the full spec Neil Ruffle ran on his RF1??
-
Woody Itson bars, 401's, DX.....chrome layback, white Kashi.....
Or you could just look at the pictures!!

It was, however it was an extremely rare POS.

I really can't see why anyone thinks that a Holeshot is any bigger piece of shi@t than a Street Beat or a Haro of the same vintage? Or any other freestyle frame from the mid eighties..??!!
I rode and broke most of them, and believe me, a Holeshot was definetly no worse than many of the big brand names.
They were ALL a piece of shi@t - they cost too much, they flexed to much and they broke too easy.
The only thing I never broke was a Badlander frame, and I hardly ever saw anyone break a Trickstar, but to say that this (RF1) was worse than the rest...??? Give us a break. (No pun intended...)
-
totally agree gary. none of the frames from the 80's were indestructible.
it may not have been the best, but it was definitely not the worst.
neil was busting 10ft airs on his, so it couldn't have been that weak.
-
:daumenhoch: :daumenhoch:
-
too true on frame breaking as any frame will break ,some were worse than other`s like the haro`s that allways went around seat tube section as haro never welded them underneath ,the prolite that always snapped at seat post tube as too long ,trickstar`s went underneath brace support on top tube but they did need a lot of abuse to do that , i think the only frame i saw out of my mates that never broke was the mongoose decade .
-
There was not enough RF1's around bitd for any of us to know whether they broke easily i would say the only person that would have known how strong they were would have been Neil, as has been said he seemed to run a different colour frame at every comp he rode but was this because he broke them????? we may never know. Who cares how strong it is Neil rode one which will always gave it a place in many peoples hearts.
Its an awesome find and should be cherished.

maybe neil did change the frame colour because he snapped them, maybe andy gave him more freedom to change frames whenever he wanted. who knows.
if it was because he snapped them, you would have thought he might have stuck to the same colour to give the impression that his frame was lasting longer than it actually did.
either way, i doubt if you had one now, that you'd give it any sort of abuse or use it as a rider in the same way you probably wouldn't trash a gen 1.

true! :daumenhoch:

I wasnt bein serious at all, I think its a fantastic find and a great frame with a great history behind it.
I love Rebel ffs, as if I can talk...lol
-
And since when did 'how strong' come into it when restoring old bikes. You don't restore them to ride them so what does it matter?
Thats like saying a Ferrari 288GTO is shite because an enzo is faster. Everything has its time in history, like the RF1!
Sean.
-
Its not the best looking bike, dont seem anything special, but its rare as fook and it would be nice to see it fully restored maybe as a ruffel replica
-

This might sound strange, but I think the fact the sticker set was so awful helped keep the RF1 out of the showrooms. I remember we all thought it didn't look that great because of that!
Think of the graphics Haro put on his bikes, how great it made the bikes look and the amount that they sold, and you'll get an idea of what I mean!
I liked the frame, just never got that exicted enough about it to buy one when I was lookin' to buy a new bike. Pity that, or you might be lookin' at a pic of mine...! (I never threw anything away if I could help it!).

Well......that's why I still have an original Condor f&f, 2 pairs of Haro Kneesavers, TA forks, 401's, DX, Haro forks, a few Skyways and a magazine collection to choke a library......

Yeah - but I'll be selling it all once I get my act together in the next few months....
-
and a magazine collection to choke a library......
But we're not counting your porn collection Gaz :D
-
I never threw anything out either. But thanks to the local chav community, both my Skyways and my Piranha have been moved on.
Like I said in a previous post, I so nearly bought an RF1. I just think that if I did have one and that got nicked instead of my Skyways, I would have been even more p*ssed off.
-
That is a very good point about the decal design putting potential customers off buying. Think of the classics like Haro (as you mentioned), Skyway, Kuwahara, Hutch, GT, SE (particularly the Ripper) even Firebird Freestylers graphics looked cool. All sold by the bucket load.
-
What date was the RF1 released? ??? Could the low sales been due to that?
-
Good points, the RF1 frame decals were the same as the Holeshot decals that were given away in there thousands at the Holeshot comps, also the paint on the frames was poor at a time when skyway, Haro etc were putting alot of effort into how there frames looked, twotone ,nice graphics etc.
Holeshot just didn't have the image that the likes of GT, Skyway, Haro, Vincent had. I'm sure this is why they didn't sell many.
Paint and graphics aside the RF1 is not a million miles away from a streetbeat.
-
The biggest problem was that it came out around November / December 1985 time and Neil had stopped riding by June 1986. So they only really had about 6 months to really push it.
During that time, I don't think it was promoted that well. I'm pretty sure that Neil kept himself to himself most of that time too. Craig & Pepi were doing well in comps and riding for Skyway / Vincent and they also done lots of interviews etc.
Also Skyway had Carlo, Damon, TonyMc etc riding for them and Vincent had Dave Young & Paul Hudson, so their frames had a lot more exposure.
I don't think Holeshot sponsored anyone else did they apart from Robert?
And you're right about the decals. I'm sure they were just standard Holeshot stickers which were given out free at comps. I don't think the RF1 ever had it's own decals. The decals are a big part of a frames indentity. I just think the RF1 was rushed to get out before Christmas and not enough thought went into it.
-
Yeah it was the standard sticker on the frames Trev, they didn't even put anything on the head or seat tubes it just had the sticker on the down tube.
In some of the ads they ran the frames didn't have any stickers on.

-
brents bike i guess and he can do what he wants with it ..fair enough i guess
but but but well im gob smacked dont actually know what to say
with out upsetting anyone.
-
Surely if he likes it then its up to him? And he may not have the money to do a mamouth build of it. At least he has tried to get it back in some sort of order. He can always change bits as he goes along but i assume its his first attempt.
Fair play to ya brent
-
I suppose you're right Kenno! I apologise Brent!
-
totally agree just ashame its on such a rare frame set
-
I was going to ask if the stem was stuck in at that height, but it was lower before???
Have you got the same problem with cutting outer cables as Billstup? Tether that bad boy down! It looks like Indi's whip

its magnificent
Adam
PS: rare bmx
-
No one - except for the spoilt little b stards -had any dough bitd , so the way you ve done that is 10/10 for me :smitten: all this bs about you ve gotta have profiles etc is shite , since i ve joined here ive seen freestylers from bitd riding with opc on and suntour stems , the vdc freestyer had a opc on as standard, but now its gotta be bling bling , to me thats how a kid bitd would have had it, tops :daumenhoch:
-
when i were a kid no fokker had three piece cranks and mx1000's.
:LolLolLolLol: :LolLolLolLol: :LolLolLolLol: :LolLolLolLol: :LolLolLolLol:
I put one piece on all my builds.
-
and remember that f/f was nt that special then , so it did nt stand out ,it only stands out now because its so rare and you lot are expecting to see top parts on it, well i think he s done it just perfect
-
well, i'm usually quite diplomatic about stuff as you all know, but i dont see what all the fuss is about..
tis rare, but that doesnt stop it from being shite
just my two penneth :daumenhoch:
-
Apart from bars, tyres and grips thats what he had BITD so i think its spot on and it probably remonds him of why he bought it. At the end of the day its all about old school for me and that is old school down to a tee.
Top job mate

Should sell it to Madall then everybody wins!!!!
Brent gets loads of money.
Madall gets the bike he wants.
The frame will get loads of nice bits attached to it.
Mrs Madall will then pose with the bike which we would all enjoy.
No losers!

OK, The lads dug this out of his garage after a good many years, I for one think its his perogative what he does with it and frankly, i think it looks ok. He's not been influenced by this site, he's just built the bike as he likes it and thats a right result in my book as we are all a lot wiser for being obsessed with BMX arent we :-\
I like it and i can see why brent does too. its not bogged down with opinions and fooking Neil Ruffels epilogue (gasp), its a lad and his fooking bike, where we all started, including Neil........enjoy Brent and welcome to the site, up to you if you want to hang around though mate :-\

It's a great find...
As a avid burner fan it's not about what bike it is... but the aura that it creates.... & this one has definitely caught everyones attention.
O
-
still say 10 out of 10 ,and keep it mate ,it was your bike then and still is now, thats history :daumenhoch:
-
I didn't realise it had been re-posted.... personally it wouldn't have been what I would have done with it... in saying that before visiting here I wouldn't even have clue as to what is was let alone the rarity factor...
Now being involved in the OS scene for a few years... It does look fairly budget IMHO... not that that matters... what is more important is that all the parts are era correct ? perhaps that's something to consider....
detail is important... even if you use the cheaper end parts, used in the right way it can work really well... but at the mo, I don't think you've done it justice....
the total mish mash of parts and colour scheme before hand I prefered.... it looked like it had lived a life which now it doesn't. It's a great project and I hope it's on going.... my first build was a real shambles... truly awful... lol....
It's cleaned up very well though... hope you stick around... ;)
O
-
Bof and I knew a lad who had a similar looking bike to that Holeshot BITD
He was called Mucus :crazy2:
I did this bike to the exact spec as I had in December 1983
This won't be to everyones taste either because of its spec
I had MX1000's and VX 3 piece Shimano DX
and my Mummy and Daddy didn't spoil me :P
(because I saved up for 12 months and lived with my Grandma when I grew up :) )
If you do a build and it makes you happy , that's all that matters and makes it worthwhile ;)

Interesting response.....................
Just like i said not everyones cup of cha but im new to the scene and dont know whats what ?
now if it were a VW i would be a lot more clued up on era and parts but it aint.
so come on give me some advice i know the tyres are very new not sure on what year the bars are or the seat stem and grips but thats about all i changed i just swapped the tuf neck chainwheel for a green one cause it was pink i know i need to trim my brake cable, i too was not a spoilt brat and rode a raleigh burner for the first few years (mid eighties) until this came up for sale for 25quid around 90-91
so if money was no object what would i put on it ?.......... just to confirm this bike is NOT for sale it is to be used and is not a museum piece but if u are willing to donate the parts (for a small fee) i will happily assemble them for you :daumenhoch:
Brent :Great_Britain:

Brent - good on ya, let us know how it rides.

I agree with most of the post's to this thread like ..... rare bike, rubbish holeshot stickers, not my cup of tea,.... etc etc but well done to Brent for doing the restore. :daumenhoch: Maybe the chase isn't over as suggested and the chase now will be for someone else to find one and restore it to how they see fit. I myself would like to see a shiny fully restored "Neil Ruffell" type replica and I was one of the many kids BITD to laugh at the RF1 because it was so boring compared to the Haro's and Street Beats.
and on the spoiled kid theme..... I had flight's and redline bars and all the other shiny good stuff but back then in 86' Id just started work and was being paid £80 odd a week and had nothing better to spend it on.. No cars, no beer no wife no kids etc.etc... So not all of the shiny bike owners were spoiled brats ya know... :LolLolLolLol:

-
thats what i was thinking? ???, do you think theres any of Neil's RF1's about, do you think Andy or Robert might have any?
-
i'm sure andy has the funds to build an accurate replica with help from the members here.he could then auction it for charity perhaps ?
-
Most likely, would love to see a real nice Neil rep, it would be the only one and if i were Andy i'd keep it in rememberence of his brother ;)
-
I've got a nice Holeshot patch that Ruffs gave me in my sticker box.
So did this thing sell?
And gogo was right, that would have been brazed not welded.

-
Guy just stopped all contact after taking out the restraining order ;D I was expecting to see it hit ebay at some point but it never did so he must have decided to keep it and possibly restore. Either way it would be good to get an update on what the story is now. Ill try and find his email address and drop him a line

i appreciate his ebay advert, hes being straight with no bull, the problem is the stuff on the bikes worth a few hundred so it makes the frame and forks well over a grand which is a lot but its a rare thing and hes been straight how hes put it on and if it was mine i'd probably want similar even though i would say its not worth it but its a very rare frameset ,ive never seen one for sale
