Title: GT Powersries cranks makeover!
Post by: generallee on July 23, 2008, 01:01 PM
Check this out - great for a mid school build, if youre not too worried about the threaded pedal insert or left hand drive chainring bolt hole.. which im not...

GT made the Power Series cranks way back, Fusion also made their own version... then roll on a few yeasr and Primo brings out the Powerbite... then Fit Bike Co do a version, then various other companies like blank etc etc .... and Prolite [from cyclesport] do this mirror polish crankset... looks very similar to the power series, more so in fact than the Powerbites or Hollowbites due to the slight different shapes in the arm comtours etc...

Del the decal master made decals up for me from my measurements and design... aiming to obscure the prolite logo whcih is lightly etched into the arm [much better to cover over than a deeply etched carved out primo logo]

so - before

Are these plated or polished?
What I'm getting at is: Would the ProLite logo buff out, or would you take the chrome off with it? I had some scratches polished out of a knife blade once, they weren't that deep, but still...

these are aolloy cranks, and you cant chrome plate alloy - they are mirror polished aluminium... so you could always buff out then re shine... take some doing but defo do-able!

Oh, I thought you anodised the alloy with copper, then plated that!
My ignorance on metallurgy knows no bounds.

you CAN chrome ally, but its a bit of a pain, and you cant chrome all kinds. You do have to put down copper fisrt (or maybe other things can be used too) but I think you plate it, then plate again with chrome

Chrome rims often show the copper plating when they flake
