Some forks come with a top nut/star washer with a cable hole. Usually the ones with brake mounts.

Once the stem is tight you can take out the star washer to get the cable down there.
(you will need to knock it all the way down cos it wont wanna come up)

or drill a hole down the middle.  or the side.   or buy a headset with a hollow bolt in the middle of the star washer..  all valid.....

Colony forks are threaded internally for the top cap.
then the top cap has a square cut out to take a 3/8" drive socket extension with a slot to one side for the cable to fit in.

what this means is not only can you have a potts mod (which almost all new school bikes with a front brake have) but you can adjust the headset with the cable in. It's very nice.

if your forks aren't threaded inside (like my colony forks) then all you need is one of these puppies!

Dont use a linear cable for your front brake they dont bend too well.
