Title: My finished S&M Mad Dog
Post by: SaMAlex on August 06, 2008, 02:13 PM

Since the show and shine is all over, and this bike was totally overlooked, I might as well post up some pics of it.

I was looking for one of these frames for a long time and got one (with much help from some of the RAD guys) on ebay last year. I kinda sat on it for ages till a set of forks came up (thanks again Rory). At first it was going to be built using mostly stuff from my shed but as the build went on, it got nicer and nicer so I had to get new stuff and clean up things I already had (I have NEVER cleaned a set of tuffs or tyres before, and I wont do it again!).

Im pretty happy with out its come out but I might change a few parts on it. I only wish I wasn’t so totally knackered by the end of MK weekend cos I wanted to take it for a spin on the track.

Frame: S&M Mad Dog (1989ish)
Forks: First S&M forks, (aka Mad Dog)
Bars: Itsons (VDCs … no Hutch … no VDC ….)
Wheels: Skyway Tuff II ally hub
Tyres: Comp III
Cranks: GT Power Series
Stem: DK Square back
Post: Elf Zipback
Seat: GT
Clamp: GT
Pedals: Tripple trap
Chainring: PPP
Power Disk: GT (that I got from Moeller in 1991)
Brake: Putbull / DC 182
Grips: Jive

that is a beauty indeed. is it rare?

is Generallee building one too?

i only ask cos he had one of those seats off me, and a pitbull and he's looking for 9/16" Triple traps.

coincidence? mmmmmmmmmmmm.

anyway, that's a wicked build Alex, now onto the frame Ray gave you.  :LolLolLolLol: :LolLolLolLol:

Ive not seen one at all since the early 90s, and apart from a few of the VBMX guys I dont know of anyone who has one.

Umm...  are you kidding me?  This bike is so ridiculous!  It's like 1989 Moeller time traveled to 2008 and forgot to take his bike back with him.

I'm all types of jealous.  Nice bike, Alex.

why was it 3 days late though Alex?

or couldn't you fit anymore in the car at the weekend?  :LolLolLolLol: :LolLolLolLol: :LolLolLolLol: :LolLolLolLol: :LolLolLolLol:

two HAF frames to lug your petrol bill must have been massive.  :LolLolLolLol:

(ps any chance of some close ups and spec run down on your HAF  :daumenhoch: )

Alex that bike is awesome  :daumenhoch: . The bike is really understated in it's looks which is probably why it was missed at the weekend but I think it's great that's how I had my bikes in the early 90's black and chrome with no scary colours. TOP build  :daumenhoch:

3 days late? It was at MK, just got drowned out by all the cracking bikes there.

Check in the Museum, I think I put a parts list on my HAF in there

one of those frames is the frame we see here today, I think.  :daumenhoch:

I have been looking hard for about 3 years, and kept my eyes open for ages before that. I have seen 2 up for sale, both on USA Ebay. One was a very early one with the strange double brake bridge, the other was this one.

before this one, Ive not seen one in the flesh for more than 15 years

if you put "s&m mad dog" into one of these ebay early warning systems you'll get an email when one if posted for sale. you might get some notifications of some dodgy DVDs too, which in my opinion, is all good.

 :daumenhoch:

If I have one criticism of the show and shine its that the bikes were squeezed in a bit and it was easy to miss things.

Looking at the pics people have posted, there are bikes I didnt see there.

It was a bit sensory overload though

You already know what I think of the MD Alex, but if you think it got overlooked I reckon it's because it's just a no nonsense build, no extras, just true to the spirit of the DDHT. The fact that it's a super-rare frame isn't immediately obvious, it's more a bike that appeals to the aficionado...

One of the nicest bikes on this site  :daumenhoch:

There have been 35 to 40 different S&M frames made, and you are now starting to like the first one they did.  :LolLolLolLol:

Hey, its all good. Not many BMX companies that have been going 20+ years are still run by the same person and still making some of the best frames around.

Not only great to see a Mad Dog built up, but one built up that looks right out of that era!

Fantastic job Alex! Awesome to see a 3 year search have an end result like this! And the white pad set!!! Simply perfect!

All your 1" S&M's are true eye candy, but this one is the tops!

Going back to stare at the pictures some more :)

Well done!!!

Thats 3 Ive seen for sale now (one was a real early one that might not have been a mad dog at all)

If it makes you feel better it wasnt cheap, $370. Then you'd have to add postage to the UK (which the seller wouldnt do) and the chance of import tax.

If you are looking for an S&M bargain you probably dont wanna be looking for a Mad Dog.
You probably dont wanna be looking at any 1" S&M really. Its some of the 1 1/8th ones that are real give aways.
