if money was no object, what would be the most thought after bmx !!! :smitten:
-
If all things were equal, i.e. rarity factor didnt count, then the Skyway TA would be tops.
-
Yeah ... it would have to be either the Gen1 or a loopy Ripper :daumenhoch:
-
i,m going to be gay,but i like one of those team burners made from reynoulds steel :smitten: :smitten:
-
For Me, It Would Be A Top Spec GT Cruiser, Early 80's, From '81 to about '84

+1

quadangle or ripper... ;)
-
ripper, then quadangle :4_17_5: although any jmc is sweet :daumenhoch:

-
Yep :daumenhoch:
That'll do it. Gen1 with Tuffs. THE freestyle bike. :)
-
im not a fan of them but the greatest bmx of all has to be the TA, it was the originally designed as a race bike and with absolutally nothing tweaked or changed in anyway it also became one of the most respected freestyle bikes that also got new life as a street rider bike in the midschool era when Dirt bro's continued to knock em out, no other frame n forks has come close or has been as widely appreciated and successful as a crossover frame than the TA.
no bias here as im sick of seeing the fookers, but credit where credits due :daumenhoch:
-
agreed, no question , gen 1 freestyler with graphites
-
Gen 1 is awesome, THE freestyle bike.
but the TA is an allrounder isn't?
Race bike that with some tyres and a bolt on platform is just at home doing freestyle.
so the best BMX ever is probably the TA.
but I'm going to say MkII Super Tuff Burner.

I agree, I sold all of mine, but have to say the TA is the best all round BMX ever :)

Barracuda Mojo

Seriously either a Gen 1 or T/A
-
I've never seen a broken TA, it has to be said. Definately an icon.
-
for 'stand-out' design icon you gotta say the PK Ripper Looptail :4_17_5:
-
I've never seen a broken TA, it has to be said. Definately an icon.
well there's always a first...I'm building mine to ride...and you know i'm a fat f***er. lol.
-
Won't be a problem. The length of the thing might be though, they do seem a bit cramped these days. My mate stuck some AD lugs on one and rode it in the 90s (just like Jerry Galley), it was sweet, but twitchy...
-
TA for being an all rounder, timeless design, clean lines etc etc. With Tuff's on, it really is a design classic.
But then a loopy Ripper has the design too, beautiful build/craftsmanship and was years before the TA...
I'm gonna be brave here....Quads just don't cut it - an exercise in "what shall we do to make it different". Unique, but flawed design, IMHO
Don't shoot me :LolLolLolLol:
M
-
TA without a shadow of a doubt. :smitten:
Gen 1 is a stunning looking bike and also the first bike designed for freestyle so it is unique in its own way.
Early US made GT Performers are SO underated!! GT designed its big chunky tubing on the rear stays and the bend in the down tube for freestyle, so they took it to the next level in my eyes. It always stood out in my local bike shop. Always wanted one. :4_17_5:

If you break it , i need a broken one for my next build. :daumenhoch:

I only want to learn that sprocket grind thing that Vic Murphy did, so it should be okay.
down tube might get a few dings. lol.

that's fine i don't need those bits of it, now wheres me angle grinder. >:D
-
looptail rippers can't be the best bmx simply coz they werent up to the job of being a bmx, kids used to crack n snap em BITD all the time.
-
I've never seen a broken TA, it has to be said. Definately an icon.
cracked mine to the point of no mending round both chainstays??
-
No one likes a smart alec, chris....... ;D ;D ;D
-
ok i change my mind. for me it would have to be the Haro Gen 1 as it was a bike that changed bmx and freestyle as we know it! as every freestyler from there on had twin top tubes, standers, pegs etc.
for racing it would have to be the loopy pk ripper. the reason is that it changed the world of bmx racing, it was strong, light, easy to race etc. and from there on any top quality racer was just like that :daumenhoch:
-
and again, it's still the TA 24"
-
I'd go with TA.......Just did the lot and looked the nutz without breaking :daumenhoch:
-
ok, so it,s a skyway ta ??? but who on rad has the best one :daumenhoch:
-
Greatest is Skyway T/A for all round abilities!!!
Favourite is still a Quad though!!! :smitten:
-
I'd go with a TA with Gen 1 very very close second. TA is definately more of an all-rounder. Just building one myself at the moment :D
-
hutch judge as so head of it time as the short back end is used on bikes today and strong as hell
-
JMC Andy Patterson for me
but for Looks i'd go with the Loopy Quad - yes they were flawed and Sid used to Break em for fun but they were totally unique
-
Greatest BMX of all time......................why are you just looking at the OS stuff?
I for one am 100% sure that I wish I had my S&M Neal Wood frame in the mid 80's :coolsmiley:
Modern bikes are so much cooler to ride all round, better geometry, stronger and durable.
When I ride any of my OS bikes it baffles me how we rode them BITD! but I guess we didnt know any different.
So my best bike of all time is my S&M Neal Wood, but then again you cant go wrong with any of the S&M race frames! :daumenhoch: whether it be any of the Challengers, RV's or the 38 Specials ;D
:4_17_5:
-
Tell it like it is JJ :daumenhoch:
-
Hell, when the pros in the US loose their sponsors and go private what do they ride? Yep you got it S&M's
Neal even rode an S&M made to look like a DK while rideing for DK :coolsmiley:
-
I think Rippers have a lot going for them because you can basically buy the same front triangle today as you got in the 70's, not many other bikes can say that. But am I confusing BMX Icon with best bike?
Ask Yoda about snapped TA's he's got a skip full ;)
-
like everything modern , it might be better but when you see all the brands lined up they all look the same :( at least with the old school you can tell whats what, they have a personality all there own :) :)
-
i think you all missed off the "S" in front of "TA" for best BMX ever
am i right laz? phil? alex ( ;))?
-
ok, so it,s a skyway ta ??? but who on rad has the best one :daumenhoch:
My total NOS chrome TA. :smitten: Just took the pics especially! ;)

Blue was a factory colour! Why hasn't anyone else done one?? It's beautiful!!

Absolutely Christoff!!
Im no big standard fan but give me an STA over a TA, and day of the week :daumenhoch:
Its not often I pick up 2Bob but Ive seen a stack of broken TAs. I dont get why people make a big deal of them at all
-
like everything modern , it might be better but when you see all the brands lined up they all look the same :( at least with the old school you can tell whats what, they have a personality all there own :) :)
Yes they all had there own personality or gimmik in the way they were built but they ALL had there flaws. Rippers were made of plastiscene alloy, TA's were totally aerodynamic ;D and were prone to snapping, GT's cracked behind the seatube, VDC where more trouble than they were worth, JMC's cracked all over, Hutch headtubes cracked as did the forkdrop outs, most double top tubebikes cracked somewhere....... shall I go on?
The main downfall of OS bikes, other than the above was the dropouts were made wafer thin! Also they were all to small! BMX bikes should have been bigger sooner. Longer top tubes. I remember getting my FreeAgent Limo in 1990 and it was like sleeping in a double bed on you're own! room to stretch out!
At the end of the day most modern bikes use the the same look because it works. Whether it be a BMX or a road bike. Another reason they all look the same is that they come out of the same factory in Tiawan with different dropouts (although they are somewhat thicker now) and different stickers.
Some are made in the US and are considerably more expensive, but hey you get what you pay for. S&M, Standard blah blah blah
-
Nice TA, Nick..I too have chrome one/black Tuffs...but the ultimate one is a white one, with white Tuffs.
Sparky24 is right about modern bikes - too similar. Black frame/black wheels/black tyres/crap seat at weird angle/tiny kids bars off a 3 year olds bike - that will do nicely Sir! :LolLolLolLol:
-
tiny kids bars off a 3 year olds bike
Small bars was sooooo 96. The NS kids all use bars that are as big as 80s bars now
-
Glad you agree on my other points though.. ;)

Like this one? :LolLolLolLol: (Sorry.... i didnt take my bikes to MK so i just gotta ;D)
All NOS apart from Tuffs. I would love NOS white Tuffs! :'(
Got early Skyway brake blocks on now and blue yellow label comp 3's. :smitten:

Glad you agree on my other points though.. ;)
Yeah, you got me on the black, but my NS bike does have a real seat WITH a seatpost showing!
Colours are well in on NS bikes tho. Look around and its like the pastel 80s bikes all over again. It all comes round.
-
Thats more like it, Nick. maybe ditch the platform, if i was being picky ;) [Only cos it hides the nice lines of the frame]
Otherwise, parts wise its spot on. I like Comp 3's on a freestyler, despite purists saying you should have smooth freestyle tyres...
And Alex,
I will be keeping my eye out more for NS bikes, to see if they have come round to realising colours are better...I like 2 mins from Skaterham, so I'm surprised i haven't seen more...
-
:wtf: is this thread all about :uglystupid2:
GT
end of.................next question
-
just something different, :-[ just nice to get peeps thoughts , sun shining and the birds are singing :daumenhoch:
-
It must be the pk ripper aluminum great looking and the name alone is just :coolsmiley:
Debate over ;D
-
Unfortunately the argument for the TA is just too strong.
Race - Freestyle - Street and it bridges the decades :daumenhoch:
-
Its not often I pick up 2Bob but Ive seen a stack of broken TAs. I dont get why people make a big deal of them at all
I'll bow to your superior knowledge buddy, but I maintain I've never seen a broken one or even heard of a broken one until tonight.... Oh what a sheltered life I've led. I'm assuming they didnt hold up too well later on in the 80s. I was all done and retired by 84 remember. I'm proper old, me :-[
I've seen pretty much everything else broken though.... perhaps with the exception of an STA. Didn't Stuart King set out to deliberately break one at some point in the 90s though? Or was that just a vicious rumour :D
-
You are all mistaken..................................Robby pro by far is the best race bike I have ever riden. :4_17_5:
Must confess though, I have riden alot of bikes in my time but never a TA so I dont know about that one ???
-
looptail rippers can't be the best bmx simply coz they werent up to the job of being a bmx, kids used to crack n snap em BITD all the time.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^WORD^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
so many kids bitd in tears coz of snappage..
"JMC's are the Ferrari of bmx world".............. sir Radkecks 'O7............. he has spoken
TA's... :smitten:
Ade :crazy2:
-
T/A`s and Gen 1`s get my vote, even Matt Hofman rode a T/A though so they do have some pedegree (sp) :daumenhoch:
-
I dont think the TA was ever a freestyle frame. The way I see it is the tuff wheel took over freestyle (cos it was awful to race on) so skyway put together a freestyle team riding the only frame they had ... a race frame! Did any skyway freestylers ride a TA once the streetbeat was out? (Thats a real question, I dont know if they did?)
TA ... Aero Pro ... aero anything ... all the same really.
(this has nothing to do with how anyone "feels" about the TA, but I dont think they are all that!)
-
i guess the skyway riders weren't "allowed" to ride a TA after the streetbeat (which was chud when you look back on it) was released..
anyway i think greatest is a misnomer.. iconic?? that's probably more apt seeing as EVERY SINGLE OLD SCHOOL BMX WAS A WEAK PIECE OF TIN!!
-
gotta be skyway ta ,pk ripper, quadangle followed by the burner as the most iconic of all
-
Rippers were being used as all rounders before the TA was on the scene.RL used to use one and PK used to race one. They might be fragile but i love them.I raced a TA at MK07 (as well as every one else it seemed) and i liked that to,but the PK is the daddy.
:daumenhoch:
-
TA= an old, brittle, rubber band... Iconic, yes. The Greatest, no thanks... I'd take a PL20 over a TA any day of the week ;)
Haro Freestyler? ...could be... it split BMX, it gave the rider a choice... Race? or Freestyle?
...who knows? Limo, Condor, Dirt Bike etc etc... this is too hard, go and ride your bike :D
-
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/g243/gashead69/Revamp010.jpg)
dad came second on best of british with this at mk08!
so.................
i now like it!! :daumenhoch:
-
Weak/strong doesnt really come into it.
At the time the TA was a great frame, it may have been surpassed by newer frames but thats evolution for you.
The balls Skyway must have had to produce and market a frameset from quite radical tubing.
Greatest must account for iconic/desirable/cool/rideable.
Ultimately its all opinion...
-
a nice shiney black torker cruiser :smitten:
-
Did any skyway freestylers ride a TA once the streetbeat was out? (Thats a real question, I dont know if they did?)
Yep, Matt Hofman did because the Streetbeat was too short for him :daumenhoch:
-

I knew you were going to say that Bill >:(
Yeah, and his TAs soon ended up under the ramp with the rest of the broken frames :daumenhoch:
-
He did go rather high though ::)
I think most bikes get broken in slams anyway, I know most if not all of the damage done to my bikes is when I bail off of them to save myself :crazy2:
