While working on my rusty GT performer last night thinking 'why the hell am I doing this when I can pick one up for £20 off ebay?' I got to thinking, when does a frame become collectable? we all regret selling our bikes from bitd, but they weren't worth much back then so, what should we be hoarding now? what will be the dogs doodads in 10 years?
-
the expensive stuff? kappa..fbm....etc?
-
Not so sure anything around now will be collectable . We loved our bikes BITD today kids use them as disposable things and couldnt care if they smash them up.

hoard it all
there i bike that not so long ago were "new" but now are collectable
like an early hoffman condor, or a KHE catweasle
-
hoffman condor, evel knievel
mid school haros etc
dont think any will out perform the golden years bikes (late seventies to mid eighties) but i probabley wrong
-
the early to mid 90's was a boom time for great strong well designed bikes
before all manufacturers added 3" to the front end of the frame
collectable, and useable

Not that i disagree with ya mate but here's food for thought....
in late 1991 maybe early 92 i was in a record shop in lewisham and looking for the latest Hardcore you know the score releases and the guy that ran the place was chatting to some other geezer about the fact that the classic house tunes were selling for good money, probably a tenner at the time when you average 12" was going for 3 quid and they were saying that all this stuff that's out now, hardcore, was throw away and would never be worth anything like the classic's were. How wrong they were.

the youngsters now will be 30 one day, and reminise the same as us, i reckon any bikes with signature frames from pro's like my Sergio Layos Fly Pantera - right i need some new stickers! to keep safe for 15 years!!
hey waxing back in the day my dp freestyler, go hammered, was covered in grip tape and was resprayed about 5 times, due to it getting knocked about, dropped down bowls etc, not much different to how modern kids treat their bikes!
-
lol not like me then. i polished mine to death.

You really don't like the current stuff do you?
Everythings collectable. Everythings useable. To the right person.

i reckon some of the early- mid 90's bikes will be collectable as back then BMX was almost dead to most people & there were just a few hardcore rider owned companys producing some quality bikes, Hoffman, Standard, S&M etc
these are the guys that kept it alive & probably got most of us back into it as well :daumenhoch:

i am to short to ride the long bikes :(
what was a "normal" bike is now a short bike
in 97 i could ride pretty much any new freestyle bike
now its all xl.
well maybe not all, but all the newschool bikes pictured on here look like they have a 38" wheelbase
its all trends though
at least the "make the bike really heavy" trend is all but passed
-
also some of the cheap end bikes will be collectable ie the chrome gt banana looking things ,any signature frame as dirty vans says ,and anything that not many was made of and stuff like standard as they are the hutch of new .
-
Mark my words, I will be a tuff wheel millionaire in 20 years :)
-
some of the top end modern is stuff is beautifully engineered and will be collectable for sure
The young kids who i ride with love their bikes and spend all their money on their bikes, just like we did, the reason they make their bikes look ratty and rusty and pieces of poo is so they dont get them robbed!

This is a forum where people collect sh!t like Dp's and Meteorlite's!!!!!!! Of course there will be collectable mid and new school frames and bits....
