These are some pics from an old 80's album of my mum's. Various old names like Ratty, Keith Wilson, Ruffell, Harry leary, Andy Patterson, Chris Young, John Lee, Steve Gilly to name but a few. See if you can spot any others. Maybe yourself, who knows?
Me and my little bruv (Nishiki 14) are in a lot of them (obviously) 'cos they are my mum's.

Cheers Tone, bring back some great memories, especially that poxy crash hat I had to suffer :buck2:
Your mum and dad rocked, took me to so many races bitd, I would never have made most of them without their support. :4_17_5:
Have to have a p1ss up soon and chew the fat :daumenhoch:
-
Excellent pics some top quality shots in there
Especially liking the gate pics and the boy with bike pics, pure retro stylee.

Ratty, that one with you and Ruffell, looks like you now.
Great pics Tone, thanks for sharing :daumenhoch:
-
WOW!!! welcome back Tony, was wondering when you'd appear.
Great pics, fantastic memories, thanks for sharing. Some of them are magazine shots arent they? Def seen some of them before.
Heres what i see,
pic 1, Ruffell leading me & Ratty with Jamie Vince behind Ratty, Southampton 81.
pic 4, Ratty in second at Albury behind Colin Bussy (walthamstow rider)
pic 6, that 'someone else' is GT pro Greg Esser at the Anglo am 2 (1982) i travelled around the US with Greg that year.
pic 19, Tim March with the Dutch no.1 rider Adie Van Der Van who drove to races in a new Porsche 928 at 17!! (Redditch Anglo-Am 1982)
pic 22, Ratty at Redditch, Mark White (no.4 Falcon Kit)
pic 33, Ratty at Southampton in his 'team masons' shirt with your cousin & Sean McDonaugh cheering, who's that in the bmx plus t shirt??
pic 34, Glen Steadman? (prostar) cutting you up at Buckmore.
pic 37, not sure that is me? cant remember wearing goggles (ever) or that white shirt? could be Gary Willats racing Nicky Matthews & Martin jose, he got put in their age group at a race there (he was younger) & just got on with it & beat them!!
-
Brilliant piccies love looking at em :daumenhoch:
-
Of course I knew Bob, I was star struck and got my mum to take a piccie next to Ruffell!. Wasn't keen on Chris Young though.

We met up with Chris recently Tone, a really nice, unassuming guy now, his dad passed away recently :'(
He has a few great memories, has had a real hard time of it lately.
-
Awesome Pic Tone. Thanks for posting them dude.
I love all the plate drilling on your Hot Plates! Early tech panels, sweet!
-
Thanks for that Keith. I couldn't remember some of the names. Knew it was Glen something but couldn't remember the Steadman. Also knew it was Colin but couldn't remember his surname. Thought Gary Willets was in my age group, 'cos I'm sure he raced against the other Tony Wonfor and Sean McDonagh. Ratty is third behind Colin and someone else at Albury. Were you there when Colin's trousers split wide open and we taped him up with a complete roll of tape?. He looked like he had a nappy on ;D ;D ;D Also, I think that was when Chris Wonfor (Uncle, manager of Masons) borrowed his mates camper van to go to Albury and he took it through the width restriction at Wood St. station (Walthamstow)and it wasn't wide enough. What a mess!
Great memories. Seems like only yesterday. Had a look the other day and apparrently they are rebuilding the Birmingham wheels BMX track. That was my favourite track. Remember seeing Pete Middleton crash on the camels towards the end. When he got up he was holding 2 pieces of bike. His pro-class had snapped clean in half. Priceless!
-
Great pics , thanks for posting :4_17_5:
-
Excellent pics.
Makes me wonder how good the likes of Ratty and Nishiki could've been if they hadn't given up racing so soon.
-
Ratty is in front of Jamie Vince in the 1st pic, that should tell you how good he was.
Nishiki was battling for nat no.1 with Sam Jarvis. :daumenhoch:
-
Tony, Gary Willats was in your group but they messed his entry up that day & put him up a year, most people would complain etc he just raced them & won!! Shows how hard your group was with Schofield, Maloney, Stock etc etc!
-

Yeah, pretty amazing. If they'd carried on they could've been as famous (in BMX circles) as Ruffell, Slater, Schofield, Middleton, Matthews, Salisbury, Vince, Maloney and some old geezer named Wilson ;)
Ratty, lay off those tabs, get a K-Dub training programme and give us hell in 40+ next year. I love a good comeback story!
-
Pic 2 i think is either Scott Vogel or Dylan Clayton in the Robinson kit ,and Jamie Staff tucked in the Raleigh uniform
-
Gutted for Sam (or Daniel as he was known then) as he got a number 4 plate at the end of the season. That was the year of the world championships in Japan. Top 3 had all their expenses paid to go and he missed out by a couple of points I think to Louis Mears. Mum and Dad couldn't afford to go. :'( :'( :'( Suppose he'll just have to make up for it now in the old fart's class ;D ;D ;D
-
Also Keith, the only picture that isn't a photo is the first black and white one. I got that off Ruffells own site. The rest are all photos scanned from mum's album.
Wasn't Scott Vogl by the way. He was only about 7 or 8 then. That is Steve Gilly in front and he was about 12 at the time.

ace pix mr 1-4
are these from the much loved photo album & shoe box????
im sure young samuel has shown them to us b4 :coolsmiley:
but loverlee to up them for the rest of the rad community
question?????
where are the shots of Scott Braithwaite
he was also in your age group alongside
Schoffy , Malony , Young , Riviera
scott was on Sixar "Scorpions" shop team
thier race gear was yellow/orange if i recall correct
one more question tony 1-4
did you ever beat Schofield?????
-
Yeah, course I did. When he fell off. ;D ;D ;D
I was very quick out of the gate (something to do with the 27 inch thighs I've got!) but somehow they all came powering past me.
You speak as if we are aquainted. Have I had the pleasure?
-
Pic 2 i think is either Scott Vogel or Dylan Clayton in the Robinson kit ,and Jamie Staff tucked in the Raleigh uniform
Steve Gilley (in pic 2) would've been born in 1970, either same age as Wayne Llewelwyn or one year below, dont think DC or JS are that old?
-
Could the Raleigh bloke be Matt Oakley or am I thinking of a different age group?
-
champion pics im surprised you remembered my name
theres not many people on here who raced at albury , buckmore and wheels with us.
excellent memories.
reece

couldnt agree more
my age group that had schofield, holland, stocky always was crowded before the days of a,b,c finals if my memory serves me right we had to endure 1/16 1/8 1/4 semi's and a final. super fit we all were :LolLolLolLol:

Shame that.
Sam, why'd you pack in racing so young when you were so good?

In picture No 22 the guy on the redline no 1807 is Antony Butt (Butty) Before he rode for Birmingham Wheels.

I raced against Jamie Staff in the late 80s (1973 year of birth); I think Dylan is a couple of years younger.
