Todd Anderson's Freestylin' pic at Camarillo quarter. Was 11 feet out, upside down, and 75% x-ed up. If someone could post that I would be eternally grateful!!! :D
Carlo's 13 foot granny air at the 88' Worlds!
Does anybody remember when Graham Marfleet bomb-dropped off the balcony onto the trick ramp at some UKBFA event? I've never screamed so loud in my life. Just retardedly unbelievable!!! I should have listed this first :2funny:
Watching CC do a demo around 85. Taught me what smooth was.
My first 540 :LolLolLolLol:
We all have great memories so share them! Waxing nostalgic FTW :)
-
OOOOHHH...the Plywood Hoods vid when Jones unleashed the hitchhiker! Fug me, that was insane. Jones should still be getting Christmas cards from every flatlander.
Watching Jason Webb go from ok flatter to one of the best ever. Damn I wish I could get ahold of where he is now :( I'd stay at his place every so often and we'd go flatting 'til the sun came up. then eat banana fritters and crash. :LolLolLolLol:
First time I saw Phil Dolan unleash the "Chainsaw" at Leicster Square. Dude just clicked overnight.
The time Andy Brown walked up to me and told me he was going to rip my lungs out of my throat. :uglystupid2: LOL, still don't understand why he would fly off the handle every so often!
Did I mention the Graham Marfleet bomb-drop? Yes? Well here it is again. It was INSANE!!! >:D
EDIT: Dammit it sucks you guys are always sleeping when I'm on! Time zones FTL

Yep....I never understood that either...he had a lot of anger for a small guy. I remember him threaten to beat seven bells out of Jason Ellis at Alfreton, fooking no idea why!

Get yourself a copy of 'Barry on a Grifter' it has Carlo's run on it... and LOADS of comp footage!! :daumenhoch:
-
Carlo was the overseas Hoffman. That kid ruled =)
-
Sitting on top of Carlos vert ramp watching him blast a 540 over 12ft many years ago!
Hoffman coming to the UK for the worlds in 87!
Bestwicks double whip flip!
Hoffmans first flair in Mansfield!
-
Chris Young at Rom doing what we would now call a suicide no hander jump, popping BOTH GRIPS off his bars and getting them both back on before he landed..... I shit you not. Unbelievable.
The first time I watched Headfirst.
Standing open mouthed as Jerry Galley rode Leigh on Sea skatepark and shut the whole place down. No one moved, no skaters, no bladers, no one. Ruler :4_17_5:
My first 540!
Learning flips (sort of) for my 40th birthday.
My last 540!
There's so many, but those listed are the ones that I tell the stories of most often. :)
-
Sitting by the clover at Rom, and seeing CC struggling to get his bars through the door into the skatepark. Then riding straight into the pool and getting about 5ft out, still with his backpack on.
Lee Hook (R.I.P) doing about 8ft in the performance, with only a pair of cut down jeans and vans on :idiot2:
Greg Guillotte doing no hand one footers at our vert ramp in '87, 21 years later he's using the pic I took on this forum!
-
Standing on stage with Pennywise just 2 weeks ago!!! :LolLolLolLol:
-
Bro Hymn!!!!!

Actually DJ, what about the first KOC that Scott Malyon rode where he jumped that box so high, no one in the stands to could see him....
-
jason ellis -nosepick drop-in into the pool at rom. riding rom with ryan evans, jerry, zak etc early 90's. hoffman-mansfield,k.o.v.

Serious Air!!... wish i was able to do that lol
-
So many, it's difficult to pin down one or two.
How about Lee Reynolds' hyperstretched cancan lookbacks at height over the Alfreton ramps?
Carlo's massive air, which I was there to witness but missed because he was already up in the air when I realised something was going on. That comp was pretty harsh on parts, I inherited a Skyway seat from Mike C. ("I'm sure it's fixable." "Here, you fix it then.") After straightening the rails out I ran it for years.
Meeting McCoy again, and seeming to pick up the conversation almost where we'd left off, with the bad crash at the Tizer Worlds.
Being prodded on the shoulder and asked to get a cup o' tea by Chris Moeller, as the queue was horrendous.
Deep introspective conversations with Chase Gouin, who reminded me of myself in a lot of ways but with a MUCH more 'interesting' life.
Chatting with Hoffman at The Rider Cup, imploring him to do a frame for riders who don't do ramps. Within a couple of years I was riding a Big Daddy.
Evenings at South Bank with Aju and Andy Brown. Hanging out with Phil Dolan and James White at Hastings and Southsea.
Seeing Evolution T-shirts on dozens of riders at Southsea, not Vision Street Wear as had been the case the previous year.
Hearing Mike Canning's reaction when he was told he'd be jumping The Chasmer at Hastings: "What??? That big phucker?"
A long hot Summer at the Chingford Midi-Ramp, desperately trying to get out of the top.
Jeez, that sounds like Rutger Hauer's Blade Runner speech. Sorry, I was on a roll, it's all been so good.
-
Bro Hymn!!!!!
Oh yes Rob, bro hymn it was, pure moment of "I love what BMX does to my life"!!!! check the video I did with my phone
http://www.fatbmx.com/modules/news/article.php'storyid=5393
KoC... there are countless amazing memories from that event for me, anytime gerry turned up, jon taylor's crash off the side of the vert ramp, food fight in pizza hut with McCoy, Wingham, Chaos, the list is endless.... shame really.... ah well
My ever lasting influence is a pic I have of Blyther, skying out the bowl @ Pipeline on a red FST, pure blue Cali skies, clean crisp concrete. The 1st magazine I ever picked up, still my ideal of bmx!
-
Also, for me... the first time i ever saw Gerry Galley ride a bfa contest...
think it was St. Albans or Hinkley... just came in, no one knew who he was...
only got like a foot in practice... then in his run, busted out like 12ft airs!!
Blew me away!!
-
some of the best are being there to see zak shaw pull the first ever 360 backflip at crowhurst, being in the wall of death arena while clymer attempted to hack round it with my chain on his bike and s&m pad stuffed in his shoe then his bike got to spend the night at my house! (that means a lot to me) :LolLolLolLol: And when he flipped the chasm!! seeing mirra ride in the flesh for the first time at southsea. Any time watching mike canning ride, so much style.
-
a few for me:
watching Hoffman for the first time at the worlds, jammin salmon and real no handers
winning the regional round and qualifying for BMXBeat which led to many many good times
going to my first contest at the Portland leisure centre in Notts (83 maybe???) first time I saw riders from other places (inspirational)
and enjoying the benefits of being one of the older riders on the scene......... >:D  >:D
-
Meeting Dave Slade at school who was probably the first person to really get me hooked on this thing we call BMX!
Spending long weekends riding at the Hudson's and just generally hanging out with a cool bunch of riders.
Dave Slade's attempted pop out on to the balcony at Holeshot - funny as fook!
Watching Neil Ruffell ride the keyhole bowl at Southsea.....one word....awesome!
Being at the Hudson's to see Jason Ellis go from 6" airs to 7' airs in the same day. Propably one of the quickest progressions I've ever seen in a rider!
Seeing Dave Young ride for the first time at Washington and just thinking to myself...how fooking smooth is he!
Meeting so many people with one common interest at such a young age and traveling all over the country to ride, having loads of laughs on the way.
All this Gaz F without once mentioning Dominguez :LolLolLolLol:
I could go on for ever....
Daz. :daumenhoch:

Good call.... I have so much to tell, so many amazing things thanks to BMX.... the guys I work with are always like "yeah, right!"
Its taken me to places I'd never have gone, met people Id never have met & "forced" me to do things I should never have done :LolLolLolLol: I cant imagine a life without it, popular or unpopular, cool or uncool.....
-
Its taken me to places I'd never have gone, met people Id never have met
Spot on DJ.....that's what I love the most about it!
By the time I was 16 I'd traveled from one end of the country and back again a 100 times and met sh1t loads of great people who are still mates today. Most of my mates at 16 hadn't even been out of their own town! Some of them still now don't go anywhere. I've experienced things and met people which all adds up to make me the person I am today!
We had a riot when we were kids, got away with SO much. My Dad put so much trust in me, going down to London at 13 on the train with my mates, just things like that.
It hard to describe what I mean....
Daz. :daumenhoch:

lot of other memories but can`t remember now
influences for me agu bubu as rode all the time at southbank ,my good friend m mullen who kept riding even when we gave up and allways pushed to get me back on a bike

Seeing Bob Haro ride at the NEC in 83, with a coaster, and realising what freestyle was all about :daumenhoch:
Going on the Skyway European tour in 83 with Andy Patterson, Bob Medano, Chris Young, Dean Scott-Webb and Jason Maloney, in fact that made my whole career :daumenhoch:
Riding with and competeing against Eddie Fiola and Mike Domingez, and riding with the Curb Dogs in 84 :daumenhoch:
Competing with my son in the same comp at the Masters in Germany, and getting joint 6th with him :LolLolLolLol:
Oh and winning the British Championships at Old School this year :LolLolLolLol:

there's been so many great memories from the last 25 years it would be impoosible to list em. glad i had my camcorders to preserve alot of stuff but there was plenty
of things not captured but are instilled in my memory.
same prob goes for us all. for every riding scene there would be defining moments.
seen many friends come and go thru the years . 2 passed away( marc reardon, paul kimpton) good times , bad times but the most amazing thing is i love it as much as i did 25 years ago.
:daumenhoch:
-
My favorite memories of old seem to have been overshadowed by those of more recent times, 03-06 riding with the Dartford posse. Good times :daumenhoch:
-
Seeing Hoffman ride at Mansfeild too.... Incredible!!
changed my view on riding completely.......
I found me ticket in an old shoe box tonight...

i suppose for me my greatest memories was being there at the evolution of bmx in the
uk, being one of the first to ride rom skatepark on a bike, one of the first to air the performance,
the list goes on, i wasn't around in the middle and i certainly wont be around at the end but only a few
can say they was there when it started :)
-
:'(
-
i think that last bit i wrote about not being around at the end reads wrong ;D
what i meant was that after 30 years the sport is really heading to the top so in
another 30 years i'll be six feet under and it will be a national sport, trust me on that ;)

For me it's got to be a UKBFA national at Carlisle in 86.
Firstly.......crazy eric "attempting" a 540 across the canyon, which he obviously wasn't going to make, and breaking the Quarterpipe in the process.
memorable for the comedy value, plus it was the first 540 attempt I'd ever seen...never mind the fact it was across the canyon too!!!! (I also heard it was Carlo's QP he broke?? Can anyone confirm??)
Second was seeing Neil Ruffell air overflat, right over the balcony (9ft +) and blow the pro-class apart with his height and variations. He was absolutely awesome that day.
Somehow he managed to finish third behind Pepi and Craig C which drew boo's from the whole crowd (even from the locals who wanted pepi to win!!)
Could never understand that result!!!
-
cardiff ramp room has some amazing memories. from getting banned by andy reardon for refusing to pick up a tramps turd from under the quarter to watching top pro's from around the
uk riding on my home turf. :daumenhoch:
lee reynolds, greg guillotte, andy brown (semi regular) aju bubu, mike canning, crazy eric, graham marfleet and many more passed thru those doors.
here's a pic of marc reardon on the right, and i think andy brown on the left. synchro airs.

Yeah - I was riding Masterclass that day - couldn't understand the judging either...

Riding at Stevenage and seeing Ollie Matthews ride for the first time, blow away, he was the first really high level person I ever saw ride.
Watching Jerry Galley ride at Leigh on Sea, and witnessing his welded up seatclamp as he kept smashing them. Also seeing Stuart King ride too. They shut the place down as said earlier in the thread.
Riding the really grim old ramp on Canvey Island.
Smashing my face up at Stevenage :(

somehow forgot to put my best memory. went to Koln with my mum, knew about the skatepark, and took my bike on a rack on the back of mums car. Ended up riding Koln briefly and going to Muchen Gladbach with the guys from Busy Ps in Koln. Some of the guys went on to become We The People. So so cool, and a memory that makes me smile even as \I type this!
-
That picture of Todd Anderson is insane!
I rode with him pretty recently.
Yes, Greg I do remember Marfleet's insane bomb drop off the balcony!
Awesome rider, awesome guy.
Graham are you out there? I'd love to get back in touch.
That indian air is nuts Greg!
So many amazing memories; Mon's Ramp Jam, Holeshot, BMX Beat!
Neil Ruffel, Pepi Winder, Scott Carol, Marc Reardon, Mike Canning, Craig Campbell, Stephen Laidlaw, Dave Young, Carlo Griggs, Eric Steele, Billy Stupple, Jess Dyrenforth, Terry Jenkins, Greg Guillotte, Jason Hassell, Simon Tabron, Jason Ellis, John Povah...
Getting to ride on the 1989 Haro summer tour... an amazing time in my life!
I've got some pics here:

I know the bfa judging could be dodgy but Neil (who was my fave rider of that era) did bail on two of his airs and never finished his run that day, i remember it well as i watched Neils run 100's of times as i had it on VHS. His first air was huge but he under rotated it and was thrown from his bike when he landed, his second air was a huge one footed invert, and his third was a one hand one foot which he bailed and slid along the floor.
If you seen his run at the previous national at Killingworth Neil's run was flawless and he took the win by a huge margin.
In those days flat and ramp runs were combined so you could win your ramp run but still not place overall.
-
seeing scott timmins stick the head on ian morris and break his nose, setting fire to jimmy levan's hair, staying at the pow house, being allowed by my folks to travel the length of the uk with strangers in the back of vans, representing SCOTLAND at the 1990 ibmxf world champs in france, BsD parts, the chasm, the frog, charlie reynolds, jim dirt, all the backyard jams, the gary forsyth KOC trip, riding livi when its -2 deg, hanging out with the boys, TEAM SANO, seeing hoffman ride the giant qrtr in OKC, seeing my own frame get built at s+m, getting mad wi it, wow.
-
watching as Ross Sewage jabbed a finger up Mr Pants arse while Mr Pants drank half a pint of Ross' pish.... not sure if thats a memory OR an influence? :LolLolLolLol:
-
Going to the m:zone jam in Croydon... nothing but riders and skaters, plus most of the BMX Action Bike/RAD crew. Rode Nick Philips kermit-green Performer for a bit (hey, I was 14 or so and that bike was famous!). Met so many cool people that day, had a blast, got bruises from the sticker toss and learnt some new tricks.
-
Also, I have to agree with Denny... Marc Reardon was very special!
I had an amazing time riding with you guys in Cardiff.

Good call, thats what we have named "The Prattman Years" down here, everyday that oddball deviant lived here is etched in my memory forever & too think, when he first moved to Portsmouth I got him a room at my Nans!!!!
Tell you what though Grant(?)/Gordon(?)... If I/we could tell more stories like them I reckon we'd get banned from here?!!! :LolLolLolLol:

Silently determining who had true feel/instinct/awareness simply by watching peeps flatlanding at the church square in Chiswick... Our spot was right by the Turnham Green tube station. Whoever went off w/o drawing threatening body language from rush-hour pedestrians obviously emitted instinct, control, and enough stylistic confidence as to keep a straight-laced banker type from questioning his current path and/or lifting his briefcase up to instictively protect his nads. I'm not even semi-joking...guys with obvious control never even conjured any resentment from the home-goers... but sketchy dudes (grems) warranted more than a few disgruntled comments. Still, we all supported each other for the love of riding and went to any lengths to defend any of our crew, talent or not. I kinda feel bad for screaming at all the old ladies on the sidewalks the way I did but hell, I was oblivious to life. Glad they never dropped and clutched ya know?
Hey Lee...do me a favor and find Amber. I've tried but I suck at computers yo. But find Webbie first!!! :daumenhoch: You find Webbster and T3 will live again! Damn you being the only other rider to hit 11 ft at Meanwhile. I was jealous dude, not gonna lie LOL. I helped build that shite and you came along and practiced 'til you ruled. Seriously though, so much respect and love to you especially now that I see you're still the same glowing, generous, and beautiful person you are and always were.
Kids today are spinning double-whip barspin tailtaps without a thought... :wtf:... meh..they got no style though. And no feel. They just pull shite like robots and have no idea where the roots are. I'm convinced that everyone who posts here remembers the roots. Always remember, always feel, always love. Glad I found this site cuz you guys remind me of what riding was always about. We rode for the love of riding and nothing else. That's why we get stoked on old friends and old pics and vids. We rode those old comps not for trophies or (very little) money, but because we loved to hang out and watch others as they watched us. We were in our element. We old school die-hards will always have a common bond. We grew up together in the beginning of it all and we rode because our blood and soul told us to. As we watch the new-new school push themselves for money and fame, we will have the wisdom and experience to recognize the true apprentices of BMX ideaology and be capable of realizing who is here for the short and long term.
And remember. We had to learn it all the hard way =)
Roots, love, soul, instinct, feel, and heart.
Long live the bike

F@CK ME GREG - you're a bleedin' poet as well!

Yeah...maybe I'm looking back at it through nostalgic glasses Steve. I remember the result not going down too well though. Probably because Neil seemed to ride with more energy and passion than anyone else!
If I remember rightly - you won your age class on that day didn't you?
-
We had some great times riding around London...busking in Leicester square with Greg,Lee, Jason etc.....made loads of cash that we spent in Taco Bell!!....also a fun night down in the Crawley Barn?...sleeping cold in the cars over nite..getting breakfast at Gatwick airport...and someone driving their car up the 1/4 pipe which we then set fire too using instant milk powder (the car not the ramp)...!!

I was at Crawley when Canning was fakieing his Escort Estate up that 1/4 , and remember the powdered milk thing. The Jam made the cover of R.A.D , my shoulder and foot did as well I think.
My friend Spike came second in B group, behind Angry Brown.

Julie McDonald anyone....??!! Lovley girl. The last I heard of her she was living with Ross Marshall.
With regards to your comments Greg, I feel BMX is a lifestyle choice now. You get the bike, you dress a certain way, and you align yourself. The world can be a shitty old place so hanging out with like minded people has always been the way. We loved to ride, so we rode with people who also liked to ride. And at some point we all became the architects of these new riders world, and the BMX sub-culture was born (that borrowed quite heavily from Surfing and Skating respectively, while tipping it's hat to motorcross of course). Now it's a more formed sub-culture and everything is more streamlined. Perhaps even their riding styles. Are we missing the nuances of their style, or are we just old farts?
Have to say I like the old rooty styles, but then I don't consider that a sleight against the new riders. It's just the world I rode in at the time, and I recognise it for that.
Culture is far more disposable now, so perhaps they haven't got time for what we percieve as style. Better that there riding though, and not sitting in front of TV's.....
These are just my own thoughts by the way, and are not intended to offend anyone!
Greg, when are you coming over to the UK? I went past meanwhile the other day. Always remembered with fondness.
Hope your well mate.

That was a loong time ago Mr Brown.....we parted ways sometime in the late 80s...
trust you are well

I only just realised who you are, Ross. Bloody Hell, etc.
Think we met a couple of times at comps, probably Alfreton. And/or during trips to Notts with Shaun Allison & Chris Hardy. Never did get one of your Life's A Sandpit shirts, maybe you should do some more.
Last time we spoke was at a Rom Day, early 90s. You said my tyres were too soft for riding the cloverleaf, so I got them up to about 90 at the garage. "Right, now hold on 'cos you're gonna fly around there now." Damn right I did, haven't ridden it since!
Think Slade was there that day filming on the camera he'd loaned from Sheffield college, I'm sure some of it ended up in Smart People In A Car Crash.
It was an amazing day, I'd just started riding (due to living) in London, and I remember being amazed that the folks I'd seen at the local comps were there at Rom. Plus I got to see Jason Ellis airing in the capsule (is that its name?) on a very nice black & red Sport.
Cool, great to make the connection, even though I feel a bit of a doofus for not knowing sooner.

When forced lookdowns suddenly became real lookdowns. Happened on Campbell's backyard ramp.
Every time I watch a BMX segment on Fuel TV.
Learning that Slade directed 30 Days of Night! :4_17_5:
Showing up 2 seconds before every performance at the Circus with Canning.
Seeing Beetlejuice for the first time with most of the circus crew.
Getting drunk for the first time and crying nonsense to Canning, Vicki, and several other peeps who were present.
Hearing Metallica for the first time in Holland.
Seeing Webb pull the first double backwards decade.
First time I seriously hung up my back wheel. More important than you might realize.
Third lay... Don't ask...
Seeing and using a 1/4 pipe for the first time.
Star Wars at 7.
Watching Lee go crazy over a chick named Ellen at the 87' Worlds and thinking :wtf: :2funny:
Watching Chingford locals start using drugs, not understanding, and then waxing hopeless years later praying those guys never went this far.
Stumbling upon myself on YouTube, discovering MySpace, and being sucked back into the only world that doesn't lie.
Remembering again, after 2 decades, what it was always all about.

Yeah, not too shabby. A million miles from where I started out, but it looks the same for most people here. What are you up to these days?
