voodoo cars posted in another thread last week about this so i thought it deserves its own thread and a bit of an udate!
so basically there is a grassy area at the back of the coventry sports center next to the swimming pool, there is now an intention to build a skatepark on this area. £500,000 has been granted to build a skatepark A.S.A.P. coventry city council have been in touch with the BSA (british skate association) who have in turn been in touch with jim the skin (skate legend, owner of ride skate and bmx shop) who is attending a meeting this week for prelimenary talks about the skatepark. after that a focus group will be set up of a few select skaters, and riders, too give opinions! who knows what the park will look like but saffy cost £260,000 and that place rules! it is also hoped that dreamland skatepark builders from the U.S will be involved (built saffy) so we don't get bendcrete ramps like whats in the rest of coventry.
hope it happens!

:knuppel2:

Hope it gets some BMX rider input aswell :)
Good news, hope it happens without half the money being spent on quango's and meetings. Sorry cynical mood tonight.

Good Luck, Leigh-on-sea got twobob's help, then ignored it, and built a right load of shite.

Good news indeed: lets just hope they pull their fingers out this time round, as they buggered about in the 80's & never got anywhere sorted before things quietened down. It beats 'having a go' with security 'jobsworths' outside The Tuns eh Phil?
Billstup: :LolLolLolLol: ...in fact they'll probably throw in Bedworth for that price as well!! ;D

Surely that £500,000 is to buy the whole of Coventry :2funny:
....and you'd still have £499,999 to spend!

wheres the meeting phil ? i went to the holbrooks park meeting + lthe nana's from mercia were there apposing it . jim soon put em in their place !!!
cant help but luv thy jim :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch:
-
i was at the holbrooks meeting! i had a bit to do with it. who are you then?
-
I really hope it happens and soon as well. The problem is that things like this get 'input' from bmxers and skaters then its deemed too dangerous (health + safety) or too expensive. Then their advice is totally ignored because some graduate sh!tkicker wants his or her name on the place and it turns out rubbish. I remember a good bmx track being built in Coventry in the 80's. Yes, it was a little late but the worst thing was that it was in an area called Wood End. Its for 'regeneration' they say. Rubbish. Bandit terratory. If you went, there was a good chance your bike was gonna get dragged from under you as you rode it. Even now there are some bowls at the Alan Higgs centre, which, if you go at the wrong time can be dangerous. I know- I got surrounded by ferral kids and nearly lost my bike...
Lets hope they get it right this time. Make a good park. Charge to get in to keep out the trash. Hopefuly put a roof on it, and finally, hurry up before I'm too old to ride...
-
Yup Voodoo, twas too little too late...
And in Wood End: think it was meant to be used as target practise for the drive-by mob! ;)

i'm fletch ( how'd u guess ? ) was living very near to the park at the time + spoke to jim bout it . he info'd me bout the meet at the unicorn club + thought i'd try + do a bit 4 it . it was just amusing that the chaps at the mercia club were opposing it as being a threat to their park . only trouble was , they were up against the mighty JIM !!!! sod that matey !!!!!!
must admit i did feel a little sorry 4 them. i mean they did'nt have 2 build an indoor park . and it was better than nothing wer'nt it ?
so where is the next meeting phil ?

we need that in this town....a track is a must, not to big but a decent size and a bit of order...paying to get in etc,etc...covs to chaved up with idiots causin greif.....the alan higgs is ok,but to many dookeds...i rode up buy wood end back then and its not the best place in the world, but its gettin better, also a few kids made a really old track buy caludon castle school back in the days.......so come on cov council...sort it...
-
Bit late to this thread, but Coventry once again has a BMX track. It's a small one at the Alan Higgs centre, and was built by Mr Jenks quite recently.
On 20th June, as part of National Bike Week, there's a launch event - more details at:
www.coventry.gov.uk/bmxtra
If anyone is interested, pop along. I'll be there as I'm organising it.
Andy
-
I was down at the alan higgs on friday as i had a day off...no one about...had a little ride on the track..not really suited to my om flyer, but loved it....ill be there on the 20th....
-
Nice one. Cycleactive are coming down and bringing some Bikes for folks to use, so should be good.
Spread the word... I'm not a BMX'er by background so don't have the local contacts you probably have. I work in schools promoting cycling via Sustrans Bike It, hence my involvement in putting on this event as it's a good thing to point the pupils (and their parents) towards.
-
i contacted Sustrans
very helpfull sent me a few routes for me and my boys to cycle
the greenaway by offchurch
and
the old train track by market harborough through the old tunnels they loved it
-
if you have some flyers for the event go and see johnny or jay who works in kong in the city centre....i know they love there bikes....im sure they will help you out and try to spread the word....
-
Any Radsters going on the 20th June? Take some old skool 8)
http://www.coventry.gov.uk/bmxtra
Maybe put up a post in the events section?
-
Cant make it on 20th but will pop down for a look and ride soon
-
£500k is decent money for a large concrete facility these days, but always remember that it doesn't all go on the park itself. These projected budgets seem to have a way of dwindling as the job nears a start.
And I'm sure you will, but stand firm on the polishing issue. Many an ok concrete park has been ruined by over polishing as companies blindly follow the demands of a few skaters instead of listening to the user group as a whole.
Good luck, and I hope it turns out sweet :daumenhoch:
-

I popped into there (via the Vans side of the shop,) they let me drop some flyers on the window with all the others so hope they're helping to spread the word too.
Cheers for the interest all.

Why did they rebuild the place after the blitz ::)
