Come on then fill me in...history, pics, reviews, ads, stickers, colours, recommended parts, etc, etc, etc...
I have Joe's old 1" Holmes coming this week.
I admit it, I am a S&M convert.
I've seen the light.

The Holmes was a longer version of the Dirtbike. Named after John Holmes.
There were 3 one-inch versions of the Holmes:
Mk1 - Same as the mk1 dirtbike. Thin seat and chain stay tubing. No 990 mounts. 2 drop outs stuck together on each side
Mk2 - Funny looped seat stays. Usually without 990 mounts. Usually 2 drop outs stuck together on each side.
Mk3 - Same as the Mk2 dirtbike. Thicker seat and chain stay tubing. Usually with 990 mounts and solid drop outs. The most common 1" Holmes.
Id like to do a photo History but I dont know when I'll get round to it.

as alex said above then followed by the holmes oversized, 1/18th aheadset everything else the same as a mk3 1in holmes inc seatpost size
heres mine

also there was the next generation holmes with major changes, different headtube gusset, bigger dropouts, single tube joining bottom bracket to rear chain stays, 1in seatpost, brake cable routing now makes the cable go around the seatpost tube not through it, the seat and chain stay ends were capped

there was also a holmes with the gussett between the top and down tubes, ive never seen one up close so cant comment on any differences to the other versions, hopefully someone can fill in the details about this version

Thanks guys!
Alex - thanks for the pics...that Mk2 is a weird fella.
Both the yellow and the chrome mark ones are sweet. What were the years manufactured for each generation?
:daumenhoch:
-
Aprox manufacture dates:
Mk1 - 1990 to 1992
Mk2 - 1992 to 1993
Mk3 - 1993 to 1995
-
Is there a way of dating a frame from it's serial number?
-
kinda dave alex had or has a list of all ours to get a ruff idea
-
you cant get month or year from serial dave well dont think you can jusy build numbers
unless ones been sorted
-
I have got a bit of a list of S&M frame numbers. They seem to be ongoing numbers with no date tie in at all.
From my records, DSDs frame was HXL6290 (or maybe HXL6320, I had 2).
All I can do is reference from a mk3 Holmes frame that I got from S&M in April 1994 which is HXL4017.
That makes yours later than a 94. Id say it was one of the last 1" Holmes frames, hence it not selling cos everyone wanted the Oversized ones, and it was still sat in a shop a couple of years ago.

"SCP____" ? Ive not seen that before. Holmes frames are usually "HXL____"
I wonder what thats about?
-
challenger think jjs plopped in an extra teaser pic
-
Oooooops ;D sorry, yes that was a pic of Challenger drop outs. Pic now amended with Holmes drop outs :daumenhoch:

Look at that. The number of JJs Holmes is right in the middle of the two chrome mk3s I had. They were probably in the same batch sent to the UK, even tho they went to different shops.
(Does your challenger have double thick drop outs? In that photo they looked much thicker than my challenger ones are.)
Rory, yours is a right rare one eh? mk3 with no 990 mount. OS legal no less!
