Trying to learn to do a Hang 5 but I can't get the back wheel of the ground. Anyone give me some tips or pointers on how to do this trick?
Thanks

Hope this helps -

Thanks guys, some great help there. I just can't to get the rear to lift up despite leaning forward a lot. I think I am applying the wrong technique. Looking at the videos, it looks like you need to sort of pop or spring the back wheel up. Oh well, more practise :)
-
dont be shy as to dab the front brake till you get the feel its just timing.
-
You need to use your arms. Put your foot on the comfortable peg side, lean forward and push the bike up to your bum. Hang 5's have as much to do with flailing leg balance as they do forearm control.
-
Decided I want to learn these too as its a really nice trick especially when you see someone hang 5ing around the deck of a bowl.
I have found dabbing the front brake really helps to get the rear end up but it means you lose alot of the rolling momentum once up in position.
Are you running a front brake? i certainly wouldnt fancy learning them without one.
-
Yes, running a front brake but so far have tried to do them without using it. In theory you should be able to do them without a front brake as its all to do with finding the balance point. So far I have not had chance to try but I will this week.
-
Had a quick go tonight and still no luck. That video is really helpful so I will try and have another go tomorrow. I think this is going to be one of those tricks thats bloody hard to get to click but once you do, it will be fairly straight forward.

to help as it helped me
go to a large car park or flat area
learning the balance point at slow speed can be harder than at a faster pace.
try turning the bars around and standing on the pegs facing the seat so your at the front of the bike
roll along grab the seat and at a medium pace lift the rear end of the floor by the seat and with one leg hanging use it as your balance.
after a while it will be easy to feel more comfy rolling
you can later swing the frame around and try it the other way even bring the frame right round and your rolling proper.if you can understand all that :daumenhoch:

This might sound like a piss take, but it really isnt
Rob Ridge made a hang 5 training rig. It clamps on your bars and its got a long arm that reaches infront of your bars with a skate (or scooter?) wheel at the front. You use it to gauge the right position of the bike, and the wheel stabalises you a little while you learn. Its not strong enough to take all your weight but it helps as a referance point for the bike position.
Good old Rob :daumenhoch:
-
lol i have a rig alex i used a pair of knackered forks welded some arms just past the tyre
and bolted 2 6" wheels on ,i have a pic somewhere and it 100% works just looks strange
-
What is wrong with you people? Dont you want to land flat on your face while trying to learn hang 5s? :idiot2:
-
Harris, that all made perfect sense and I will give that a go. Thanks for your help.
-
hahah no alex i look after my head nowadays just did 53 pages in photobucket cant find pic
but will look in my photos
-
found the pics looks crap but it is just used then lobbed away
but it works and you can roll on it full weight ,the lean back to take the wheels of the deck
until you get the feel.

-

-
Dan you loon. Thats fantastic!

Just had a go at this. Sort of started to work but still need to work on my balance going backwards with two feet on pegs. When I did get it right, lifting the seat sort of kicked in ok.
-
dont do it to slow get the bus rolling at medium speed and dont put 2 feet on the pegs
one foot on the peg the other is your moving balance so leave it to catch the balance.
-
bugger of a trick, but sooooo cool when you get one right (kinda remember the feeling from about 1987 I think, been a while)
-
haha thats brilliant, dan have you still got it? can i have a go/burrow?
Me too :daumenhoch:
Dan you loon. Thats fantastic!
That is some piece of work Dan, it should be on Super-structures :LolLolLolLol:
-
cheeky bugger ;D
i had one for the rear for manuals but busted it
and was more tricky to use
i should patent it :LolLolLolLol:
-
Can you do Hang 5's after using it?
-
its still tricky ,more the knowing when to lean back before falling forward
it still takes time but forsure after a while you can roll the rear wheel up and coast along before ever touching
the 2 wheels down .
-
Is seat height important when learning these???
-
all your own feel ,i have mine set very high sometimes and that lets the rear end not come up so high
the way to get a feel for what you might like is to set your seat at a height you like ,lean your bike against the wall
and climb aboard leaning against the wall keep your front brake on and get the rear in the air you can let the brake go when you feel your at the balance point
if you dare if you dont like the rear end height lower it or make it higher you will soon feel the right place.

I took your advice Dan and raised my seat a good inch and they felt much more comfortable. :daumenhoch:
Anyway just thought i would share something funny that happened yesterday at Interact skatepark.
I met up with fellow radders Flatcap and Bettyswallocks for a session, I had decided i really wanted to semi nail hang 5's, i had done half a dozen or so and was really feeling i was getting somewhere when on my last attempt i bailed out and jumped off the bike, when i jumped i realised i had snagged some part of my jeans on my bike i heard the tear but didn't know the extent of it, when i turned around Flatcap was folded over on the floor doing what looked like some 80's breakdance move.
The front of my bike seat had somehow gone into my back pocket and when i jumped my jeans stayed with the bike tearing them from me, the rip must of been 20 inches long leaving my boxers and right leg completely exposed it was hilarious.
Anyway thanks to Mark (Bettyswallocks) for the masking tape which allowed me to ride for the rest of the session as it was only about 5 mins in that this happened.
It turned out to be one of the best sessions i've had for a long time but i did leave the hang 5's for another day after the incident.

:LolLolLolLol: magic ,would have loved to see that on a vid :2funny:

I can just imagine Daz rolling around on the floor :2funny:

hahah yep it made me giggle a tad just thinking about the moment
are you looking forward yet at the horizon or down at the ground still
looking where your going makes it a whole lot easier just feels odd
im riding a new bike now and tried some stuff yesterday ,its not happening yet got to adjust a few bits.

Deffo still looking down at my front wheel but confident I'm gonna nail them now, apart from the jeans issue I seem to have learn't how to bail them fairly safely which is to jump and let the bars go through my legs, hope that makes sense.
Strange thing is i can do them rolling backwards and have been able to since bitd having learnt squeakers with one foot on the peg, although this is much easier as you can dab your front brake to bring your rear down as going forwards dabbing your brake brings the rear up.
