Is someone going to explain why some TA's have 'Skyway TA' on the downpipe and others have just 'Skyway'.
-
That is a good question.
I was thinking that the other day.
Who can shed some light?
-
I think it's a year thing, a bit like the curved and straight rear brake bracket tube, they just changed a bit with time.
-
Chrome frames have "SKYWAY"
White frames have "SKYWAY TA"

Hope this helps ;)

Not sure you're right there, but if you are there's a lot of bikes in the museum section with the wrong sticker sets on ???
-
Al ot of the bikes in the museum, including mine, have been re-powder coated and new stickers applied, so they may be the wrong stickers :o
-
he is right about the chrome just having the skway and not the T/A bit on the end.
i've still got the bmx action bike when the T/A was first tested.
and that just has skyway on the frame sticker.
-
Now thats cofussed me even more. ???

Having said that this is Jazzchimps nos T/A
I must admit they do rule! Here's my NOS boxed one for you delectation :daumenhoch:

I think they look much better with the simple Skyway sticker. Rather than having the additional TA part.
Everyone knows what they are so why bother advertisting. Keep it simple.
-
I do remember Biagio listing different stickers for chrome and white before though, just can`t remember which was which :idiot2:
-
lol what about the true temper sticker. where did that go.
i have'nt seen many with that on.
-
I bought my TA decals from Biagio and his description mentioned that "SKYWAY TA" was for white and "SKYWAY" was for chrome
Just checked the Skyway site !!! CLICKETY CLICK !!! (http://people.freenet.de/SKYWAY/SKYWAYindex.html) and found these
(http://people.freenet.de/SKYWAY/TA2.jpg)
"TRUE TEMPER" sticker goes at the bottom of the seat tube
-
I'm thinking alot of sticker changing going on in near future ;D
-
lol got to be era correct and all that :D.
-
Just checked my unmolested chrome TA and there is no True temper sticker, just the one that says "All chome moly tube"
-
lol i think the true temper ones were on the early models.
could be wrong though.
-
there on the 83 model in action bike.
-
how early.
Mine is an 83 number 426 that is quite early.
It has never been restored.
Not yet but it needs a rechrome. Next month it is gonna get a new suit and the stickers will be just as it was before it went in.
-
I have owned my 1983 TA from new and it was originally chrome with the "SKYWAY" downtube decal and the "TRUE TEMPER" seat tube decal
Hopefully I have the correct downtube decal now or I'll have to go shopping again :-\
-
Do you have a pic?
-
Not before I restored it I'm afraid . . . sorry !!!
It's been restored now and I chose white powder instead. A photo is in my 1st reply ;)
-
Nice bike.
But I meant a pic of the true temper sticker.
Mine will be at rom tomorrow if anybody wants to compare. ooooeer missus
-
you can just see it on that white frame set on the other page.
-
This might help

I've just put white Tuffs on mine
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/a217/steve167690/Skyway%20TA/SkywayTA.jpg)
-
Sounds good :)
-
it looks better with the tuffs on steve. finishes it off :daumenhoch:.
-
Well thank you kind sir . . . ;)
-
I SECOND THAT I ALWAYS LIKE A TA WITH TUFFS ON.
NOW I WANNA GET ONE TOO
FROM bodamus.
-
My one's a neglected 84, please note the true temper sticker :4_17_5:

-
I reckon I'll leave my decals as they are. I like 'em like that :)
-
Well, don't want to upset the apple cart here but my original chrome TA clearly has Skyway TA on the decal...and the true temper decal. It's a July 84.
-
And this is mine before I had it stripped an powdered. They were the original decals, and are SKYWAY T/A, as you can see. Seems there's no golden rule for these after all ? ?
-
i'm sure i have read or seen somewhere? that the TA has "skyway" on the sticker and the TA XL has "skyway ta" on the sticker.
there are two sizes of the ta. although the XL version was introduced later than the original.
i can't prove my explanation further.
further debating and investigation may ensue???????
-
Looks like they just put what decals they had to hand at the time then, the XL ones are quite common I`ve got a dozen or so about but I don`t think there anything to go by ???
-
is there any contacts with skyway usa to obtain the truth of this affair?
someone must know, my theory just seemed a logical explanation
-
BITD one of the guys I used to run around with had a white Skyway TA from new. I'm 90% certain that it came with just the plain 'SKYWAY' sticker on the downtube. Believe me I spent alot of time looking at it as I was very jealous at the time :)
-
retrogeezer and gmac are correct, as I know of another NOS chrome 84 with ta downtude decs ;D
-
i still think my length theory holds some weight is anyone going to measure some frames???
-
My NOS TA is untouched (see Billstup's post on page 1) and they are the original stickers. I have a contact at Skyway but by the sounds of things they would probably have started off with 'Skyway' decals then moved on to the 'TA' ones they literally would have slapped on whichever ones thay had lying around - hence the inconsistancies...
but I will ask
-
that's cool, my theory is the skyway tA sticker is for the XL and skyway for the regular. it just seems logical to me
thats why all the early ones got just skyway sticker cuz they are the original length frames
GET MEASURING or i'll need tamazepams by the bucketload :LolLolLolLol:
can't sleep at night thinking about bloody skyway stickers!
has anyone else lost sleep over this ?
-
But XL frames had EXTRA LONG written on the sticker I do belive
I say that they changed in around 84 ish to the TA decal on both chrome and white so most chrome would have SKYWAY , most WHITE would have TA and some would have either
Rich :)
-
See 3rd post on page 1 of this thread :daumenhoch:
-
extra long do have xl on them....
email skyway...they replied to me last time.
-
i'm going with what Bill said, i expect they just used the ones they had to hand i don't think it's an exact art.
The earliest TA's didn't have the true temper they had a black all chromoly tubing sticker, they were K serial numbered and made in Japan.
-
Some answers can be seen on the advert topic here
http://www.radbmx.co.uk/forum/index.php'topic=6964.0
-
I`ve had a look at all of the pics of white T/As from bitd and it looks like they all have the sticker with the T/A on it, but I haven`t got any of chrome T/As as mine was stickerless :o
-
mine had the original stickers but someone had cut around the skyway on the downtube leaving a nice knife line
-
Whats the story with the different size for fork stickers?
i was lucky too get the smaller ones for my old blue ta
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/v605/scary_leary/CopyofPicture2140.jpg)
-
Well i sent hte question to Skyway and go the following reply
Adrian:
Thanks for the email.
Good question. I will check into it and let you know.
I used to race for Skyway and I know there was a difference between the original TA’s and the new versions. The originals of course had the cool tear-drop tubing and the later versions did not.
Stay tuned.
Regards,
Rick
Skyway Wheels
Will let you know what he finds out :)
-
Bart at Skyway had absolutely no idea that the first run were made in Japan and said the K numbered ones were probably fakes till i showed him the pictures of mine and one of the guys from vintage found the original test of the bike which has the details so i doubt you'll have much luck from them.
the smaller fork stickers you had are handle bar stickers Scary
-
the smaller fork stickers you had are handle bar stickers Scary
lol...is that what they are..
theres a few bikes in vintage's musuem with them..Chris Barons is one of them
-
probably the same thing mate, if they ran out of fork stickers that day they stuck bar ones on
-
The answer i got was :
Adrian:
The frames with the Skyway Only are the older version from the early 80’s.
Cheers,
Rick
-
mine had the original stickers but someone had cut around the skyway on the downtube leaving a nice knife line
Ha, I remember pointing that out to you at Slough Bob, must have been 4 years ago.....do you remember??

i do indeed mate ;)

If they later TAs didn't have tear drop tubing would they be TAs? What shape are they?
This thread is getting more questions than answers!! :LolLolLolLol:
-
in a test we dropped both types of frame off the top of a tall building and they both hit the ground at the same time. That's the royal we by the way :uglystupid2:
-
my white TA f&f that i bought new bitd definately had the TA stickers, and i always thought it was only the white ones which di, but seems as though its a bit of a lottery.
-
Well all the evidence does seem to point to the facts. So, even if it wasn't an exact art, they did seem to use different stickers on the white ones to the chrome ones when they could. Interesting stuff, you learn something new every day here on RADBMX. :daumenhoch:
does anyone have that add; race, freestyle or street? i think it has a couple of white ones and a chrome one, does that show the stickers?
-
Just to add to the thread here are a couple of pics both from 1984 showing chrome TA's with "Skyway TA" stickers :) (the 2nd pic is an XL - not sure about the 1st)

lol sorry to bring this back.
but we never did get to the bottom of it ;D.
-
I thought we did, they used whatever they had to hand?
-
i love skyway. i want to marry it.
-
I thought we did, they used whatever they had to hand?

Rich :)
I subscribe to this theory too.
My chrome 84 had the "skyway TA" decal and the smaller fork decals which scary picked up on.
I brough this whole issue up on vintagebmx years ago.
I discovered them guys don't know fvcking sh!t and nor does bart or skyway.
-
perhaps they didnt think people would be picking over it with a microscope twenty years later.
-
I don't mind 'em not knowing, it's the crap they come out with...
-
Mine back in 84 was white and had a Skyway TA decal. ;)
-
I bought my white TA NEW in 83 and still have it. It's a K series serial, curved brake bridge and has TA on the downtube but....
it wasn't an all in one sticker and seems to be made up using a standard downtube decal and a seat tube "TA" decal.
It has no TrueTemper decal, just an "All Chrome Moly Tube" decal in BLACK. The typeface is a lighter weight than the blue versions that come with the Skyway sticker sets kickin around today!
.... and another spanner to throw in too....
It's a white TA but is chrome plated underneath :-\
.... so were all the white TA's chrome underneath or what????
J
-
Maybe yours was painted white by the shop? The two part decals could confirm this. Mine deffo wasnt chrome underneath.
-

cos yours was a burner nick

Possible I guess... but the guy at the shop I bought it from was pretty lame and I can't see him having the patience or skills to go to all that trouble :-\
J
-
I thought the K series curved bridge TA's were the Jap made early ones and they were all chrome?
-

Dunno.... ya got me fella - Im non the wiser to all of this :idiot2:
J
-
it is chrome under the white ???
-
Overstock of the early framesets then as the white TA was released?
Or a bike shop had a few left and painted them up white, afterall white was (and still is) cooler (and I have a chrome one).
-
Ive had loads of original white ones and they definitely didnt have chrome underneath.
I stripped one using Gasket remover and there was no chrome present.
Interesting. I had a NOS chrome one that had the fork decals upside down on one side!
I honestly dont think that there was a perfect logic as to how things were done bitd.
