Try and get a machine shop to make a pair up using the 1/2inch ones as a former, mate did that with his triathlon race bike, used the cro-mo spindles to make up a pair of titanium ones :daumenhoch:.
I could get the details for you if you'd like :daumenhoch:

I bought some older suntour bmx pedals, you know the rectangular cage ones, off ebay a while back.
It wasnt till i tried to fit them that i found they were both left hand pedals.
So i got my friendly welder chappy at work to build up the thread with weld, then i machined a r/h thread on the pedal spindle.
Bobs your uncle, one pair of pedals.
Wouldnt be much different to go from 1/2 to 9/16.

I have a set of 9/16 XCII pedals that I bought off here for £20, I thought they were just a bit rough but the cages have been filed down so they are crap and I probably won't do anything with them. You could have the spindles from them and get them rechromed. I had a set done in Manchester, I think he charged me £14.
Here are the results :-
