I was going through my photos and came across this, Me at Hounslow (85/86) fourth straight, we had this as a big set of doubles until Martin Kemp came up short and re-arranged his face. We was told to fill it in after that, but what a jump, look how long it is and it sent you upwards, great days!
So never mind about the Dolly's of Poole, or Kong of Wigan, I think this was the biggest jump back then.

Mad Mart
-
thats an awesome jump :daumenhoch: a few more like that now without the vertical landings would do me :daumenhoch:
-
super rad, only raced Hounslow a few times, and really can't remember it?
Jumps like that these days, land flat, just think of the shock-waves that'd send through the old bones, need the vertical downside to absorb the impact of landing :daumenhoch:
-
wtf thats a huge jump for bitd track.
-
Thats fooking massive Martin, how did the bike hold up ?
-
Huge air
what a picture.
-
Thays one biiig jump.
Heres one that was always too big for me, cos the landing was higher thn the take off.
Pleasurewood hills track, lowestoft.

A vertical landing is called a wall!!! :LolLolLolLol:
-
i like that dude at Lowestoft, from the angle in the pick, looks like hes heading for one of them hook ups that hurts yer knees takes all the speed and air out of you.
-

A vertical landing is called a wall!!! :LolLolLolLol:
thats how they feel :LolLolLolLol:
-
biggest jumps i recall were the doubles in the pro section at wigan or those big uns at slough.
-
Ones that stick in my mind where Coffins at Brum wheels, more cos lack of speed on take off, Kong at three sisters, dolly at poole.
Don't know why i don't remember the big ones in the london suberbs, i raced there more often than nationals, the only one i really remember was the big one after the first berm at hayes, but thats cos i had a nasty accident that damaged my back for life when my rear skinny exploded upon landing :2gunsfiring_v1:
-
I've posted this before somewhere, but it will give you an idea as to how big the Poole dollies really were....
Step up Gary Llewellyn
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/p191/carpcrazyox/scan0001-2.jpg)
-
I really love that picture, and funny thing is, if thats from the 84? national, i would have been standing practically next to you with my arm in a sling, cos i broke my collar bone on the triples the day before
I'd love to still be able to jump like that. :'( (mind can't say i've tried yet, too many injuries from falling off in straight lines) :LolLolLolLol:
-
It was the Dr Pepper National Mr Magoo. :daumenhoch:
Talking to Jon Moore a while back at B'mouth, he said this was in practice as someone else in the picture wasn't in the same age group racing wise.
-
Yes I seem to remember about three jumping them at the same time in Gary's race, Wayne only in my age group, and bad memory for Superclass Think Andy did, possible Pete Middleton, and not sure but kinda remember maybe Sid Salisbury?
-
I was in Waynes age group aswell. A real tough age group that one. A local B'mouth rider that always did well was Rob Marshall, do you remember him ?????
I've seen another picture of two at a time jumping the dollies with one of the riders getting well squirley over them. Sure one is Pete Middleton but i can't remember the other rider.
-
I didn't get down that way much, bit of a treck for the old mans Lada/allegro.
Did Wimbourne once, Poole once, bournemouth once and another track down that way can't remember the name.
Haven't seen the pic, but think from memory i was sitting on the first berm at Superclass final time, and sure it was Pete that got very very squirly over Dolly, but as always Charlie was the best to watch, different style to Gary, Gary like myself, ducks down, keeps it low, Charlie used his legs like suspension on an mtb hits the lip and launches his whole body weight upward...great to watch.
Any other names from down that way?
-
Great thread .......More pics needed
-
I don't think any Southerners in our age stood out but Anthony Howells ( age below) and Nigel Murphey (2 above) were awsome riders.
I raced with Ant at Solent Spitfires, Bournemouth and we rode a few times together at another track in Southampton called Lordshill.
Aint seen him for years but he posts on BMX Talk occasionally and apparently still has his bikes in the loft. MRD's aswell. :smitten:
Nige rode for Hot Wheels during the 85 Kelloggs Track wars at Birmingham, good results aswell. Tried a comeback a couple of years back at Bournemouth and had a bad smash to one of his legs.
-
Yeah remember Any, big lad for his age, chunky monkey???
yeah my comeback was back in May, now sitting here with a knee thats waiting for surgery :'(
-
Bloody hell mate, that is foookin huge :daumenhoch:
-
Wow, would have loved to have raced some of the BITD tracks :(
-
Have posted these picks a while back, but never get tired of seeing big jumps
big cruiser air ::)

-
yep, thats what i love about BMX, if i go to a track where everythings toooooo big to jump, don't enjoy it, has to be something to get air off :smitten:
-
Yep, loved dirt jumping more than racing, unfortunately the bottle and ability has deserted me :-[
-
yeah, if its more than two bike lengths apart and the lip too knarly its a manual for me
-
Same jump different day.

Martin, is that jump practically identical to the big one on the second straight at the old hayes track, cos from memory looks just like it, and thats basically how i took it, running in front of Simon Hayes, landed a bit back heavy and was using 1 1/8 rims at the time and it just exploded on landing.
-
I was also in Simon Hayes age group BITD, jump was sort of the same but bigger.
-
cool, our paths must have crossed bitd too. you've just kept more skills than me :LolLolLolLol:
-
Cool pics Martin :daumenhoch: , first one looks like the Pro Star ? .
The Pleasurewood Hills last pic , Scorpion rider is Lee Alexander .
I was in yours & Mr Magoo's age group too !
-
some great pics :daumenhoch:
-
The only one I have airing out over Kong at Wigan, tbh it wasnt that big but you had to pedal like f00k to get up to the hill to the take off :LolLolLolLol:
-
would that be simon hayes riding kong behind you (Hutch factory Simon) if so, another from out age group :4_17_5:
-
1st straight doubles at Harrogate (Y&H Regional track) were pretty big, wide and fast
Me and the legendary Neal Wood:
-
thats more how i like 'em wide and fast, like the doubles on the second straight at wigan, spot on :smitten:
-
(http://)(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/o50/priv_2006/oldskool011.jpg)
not a bad hight off a jump so small.
-
Priv,
Is that down at the old Hedleys?
Who else is in the pic?

Good ole' John Walker No. 4 on the inside at Harrogate :daumenhoch:
A useless bit of knowledge is that I printed that top that Neals racing in ::) ......................... see I told you is was useless!
-
Priv,

yes that's the place scott,
from left to right it's neil javens, mathew lydon,me,lydons cousin and dave leonard and woody jumping, the actual pic is a lot clearer i've have to get it scanned at put on here.
woody was the best high jumper ive seen,he could clear some right heights,we once had a comp at the tarmac with some lads from rothwell and he cleared an oil barrel and a couple of car tyres off a tiny jump.
-
When I raced in the 70s (yes, I know that is a long time ago :)) we did not have 'doubles'. We had a different version of big jumps.
If you look in the background of the black & white photo you will see the face of the jump we are going off in the color photo.

Is that Bakersfield Dennis?
-
Those pictures are from Saddleback, Orange County, Calif. The black & white is from 75, the color is 76.
-
Awesome piece of history Dennis! I'd love to see all the shots you have from that era. I wasnt involved quite that far back (i started riding bmx as we know it in 78) but i love all that early early stuff. :smitten:
The colour shot looks just like the sequence in 'on any sunday' about motocross where the riders all come over a drop just like that (maybe its the same place??)
A few years back i rode mtb dh at Mt Wilson with a guy from Burbank called George Pondella who would've been racing bmx around there back in the mid 70's (he'd be around 50 now) maybe you knew him?
-
Come on Mr Dain more pics please :daumenhoch:
-
I do have A LOT of picture of my time and rather than start posting them all over again, I will bring my old thread up front again.
I spent a lot of time posting over a hundred photos on this other thread.
Look for, "Dennis Dain AKA Red Baron has joined us"
-
In the black & white photo how do you get air after climbing that huge hill????
priv
-
Dennis, i guess you'd left Redline by the time i rode for them, the picked me up in late 81 & i left at the end of the 82 season, i did come over & raced in the US in the summer of 82, the guys on the team there then were Stu, Jon Anderson, Greg Grubbs, Denny Davidow (i think), might 've been more but my memory is failing me now!
What years did you ride for them??
-

Priv, if you look in the background of the black & white you are looking at the the first turn, then a downhill sprint to the ledge of the Bomsai drop. When we got to the bottom of Bonsai we were completely spinning a 46 16 gearing. Then we cross the flats and hit the uphill side, a 10 foot rise, fly over 6 feet of flat and land on the side of the hill, all while turning left.
I don't know if you guys over there have heard but there is a documentary of Stu in the works. A lot of the best clips from "Joe Kid on a Sting Ray", the 70s part, are movies that Stu's dad took. I have copies of about 9 hours of racing and riding from the 70s. The same guys that made Joe Kid are making the Documentary. I know there are movies of Bonsai, I don't know if they will be in the movie but we can hope... :)

KDUB, I think I was officially on Redline at the end of 78. The team was David Clinton, Jeff Ruminer, Greg Hill and me. I was on Redline when I officially quit racing in June of 79. (long story short) My dad passed away and I decided it was time to move on and join the real world.
The funny thing about the names you mentioned above, Jon Anderson is my brother-in-law. ;D

Sorry if you frequent the other OS BMX sites, I've posted this a few times..this one me in 1984 on my Profile in Australia:

awesome height, and even more awesome bike :smitten:
-
By no means the BIGGEST but some of the best at the time where these at Illson (the Holmes' and Shooter's Local track)photographed by my old man. Great little track, really quick into them and followed by tight 180 berm straight after!
Pic has Dale Holmes in front during Shenpar JMC days (1 3/8 Rims back then), And Derby's Michael Bates and Leicester's Martin Seddon (thanks to DH.com)
-
Especially for you Mr Magoo, me (same age group as it goes) over the wigan 2nd straight doubles on my only visit, (NBMXA man really)
-
1 3/8, landed the massive jump at hayes when i was 13, overshot and landed on flat, back wheel exploded sent me flying backwards into a floodlight stand without any protective wrapping around it.....that looks like a nice set of doubles dale is taking
2nd straight at Wigan, dip in middle looks too small to be them
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/cc158/neilgrant4478/wigan.jpg)
thats how i remember them, just about to jump them on my JMC, think its '84 latest '85. UKBMX all the way, nothing against Nicky Dalton, but competition was harder in UKBMX
so did we ever meet on track?
-
Looking at my picture again it looks like these doubles are just heading into the pro section, (seems flat in foreground)
Mr Magoo i doubt we did ever race other, only likely chance would be Perry Park Coca Cola sponsored which i think was UKBMX version of the Greyhound stadium NB meetings. The midlands was very much NBMXA really but i did a few UK regionals, i seem to remember Leicester, Norton Canes and Birmingham Wheels, i ended ranked 9th for the year (Not many riders did all the rounds). In NBMXA my home club Derby raced West Midlands first so i was up against the likes of Nick Dalton and Mark O'Connor then Derby went to East Midlands which was probably even harder. Paul Clarkson, Simon Carter, Ian Dixon, Alan Pointing, Rob Males were all in my age group. In 13-15 cruisers i also had Dale to contend with.
Anyway more pictures

Norton Canes UKBMX Regional?

NBMXA west midlands at Solihull?
NBMXA west midlands, Pro section at the Brilliant but slightly mad Wordsley! You got round the first berm clean maybe once every 3 motos
-
Loving that profile bike and pic..:daumenhoch:
-
Martin we used to have some fun old kod's on that stepdown mate! Biggest doubles I can remember were the set at the Euros track in Belguim (87?), pretty mad, big double at the Worlds in Marseille (90/91?) but here I would say Slough third straight and I remember Whitehaven secong straight had a killer set.
I remember getting to Wigan and they revamped it with the pro section starting at the first berm with 3 sets of big doubles before you even got to Kong, that was a scary track!
But still, to this day, one of the raddest things I have ever seen, and i've been around, is Trevor Chapman and Gary Southgate jusmping the coffins at Birmingham Wheels on the Mongoose sidehack......
-
Did the hack survive???
-
Dont know how i used to land these
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/ii49/lee1966/LEEBMX2.jpg)
-
Did the hack survive???
Oh yes Keith mate, silky smooth they were........
-
Trevor Chapman wasnt that smooth when he ploughed into the back of me in the second turn at the Anglo-Am when Harry Leary brake checked us, felt like a double decker bus hitting me!!!!!!! :yahoo_silent:
-

Ah he was a powerful bugger was Trevor, was that on his MCS? On the hack though I think he and Southgate were pretty untouchable, maybe that stupid power was better put to good use pulling a monkey along?!
