Hello all,
Trying to find some information on a set of rims that i have (mavic ttm4)
These are on my 20 inch bmx, the only thing i have found out about mavic is that they do a lot of mountain bike stuff >:D
So my question is, what is the quality of these rims like?
Any help would be much appreciated, as i have no idea in regards to mavic
Cheers

The Mavic BMX wheelsets (race wheels) were only made for 1 or 2 years in the early 2000s. Pretty good quality from what I recall (as one would expect from Mavic).

These are TTM4's got them on a MCS that is awaiting some love in my garage. Lovely wheels from what I remember... cant remember how we came about them though, would have been a lot earlier than 2000 though nearer 1988-1990

Yeah Si, those are completely different Mavic rims to the ones I was thinking of.
A pic in the original post would have been helpful.

The TTM4 rims were standard on top of the range MBK bikes, MX 400 i.e.
They were first introduced in 84 and later on the TTM4CD (hard anno, same dark grey color as the pro class)
Fine rims, not as sought after as japanese brands, but good stuff for sure.

That's a massive understatement my French friend, Mavic rims were amazingly strong and very light; very under-rated in BMX terms that's for sure :daumenhoch:

never known Mavic to make anything that's not great :-\

Mine are the same as the ones in Crooch's pic, so i am guessing mid to late '80's then

Cheers Guys,
I know nothing about them, not very common on our shores.....can we roughly date these....
Pics to follow,

I think the ones you are thinking of were black and called xx or xxx or something like that Mike. I had a set around 2000 built onto black shimano dx hubs. and they were strong and extremely light. I wish I knew where they were now.
-
Yeah, those sound like the ones Kuwahero. Snuck under a lot of people's radar but by all accounts they were an ace BMX racing wheelset.
I wish Mavic would make some more BMX rims as I nearly always use their MTB rims.
DT Swiss is supposed to be releasing a race wheelset soon which should be good if their MTB wheelsets are anything to go by.

I have a set of these on my old JMC Shadow that I raced from '83 to '86ish. They are the same colour as yours and I only knew one other person that raced on a set at the same time and that was Mongoose sponsored Jon Greaves. Very strong, very light and an all round excellent rim. Did you ever sell them?

Nah, WAY earlier than that, the TTM4's were available in about 84/85 and were Mavic's first foray into BMX. Mavic are better known for their Road Rims, they also make some very high class and top end components inlcuding the now defunct Mavic Zapp Systeme which comprised an electronically driven gear change.
High quality and rare; a very good race wheel IMHO :daumenhoch:
