right thats it ,no more bmx riding for you.
what would you do !!!!
-
peg grind his desk :LolLolLolLol:
-
I'd listen to what he said and consider what the possible consequenses were.
Most doctors don't understand people like us, they deal with couch potato's and normal people. My doctor said I'd never have the full use of my hand after my broken wrist. I was back racing 2 1/2 months later.
However if there's the chance of long term damage and discomfort then I'd just walk away because I want to be fit and active for not only my children but also my grandchildren.
-
id have to ride again, fought too hard to get back on a bike
-
i was more of the feeling,go out all guns blazing than fade into the background.
but thats just a thought i guess, plus i dont ride hard anyway.
-
...start collecting old school BMX's and just look at em ! :LolLolLolLol:
-
20 years ago i'd have told him where to go, lifes for living
but now, its bad enough that i'm doing a job i've been told not to do since back surgery, so wouldn't wanna make myself suffer anymore when i get even older and greyer.
already feel the benefit of many crash's in my teens in cold weather :LolLolLolLol:
-
Dan I would like to say "f*** it, i'm gonna ride still" and in fact have when my doc said:
lose weight or die, which i did then put it back on again, then said when i had a wrist issue "you should reconsider your choice of sports (snowboard and bmx) you're 36 not 26)
however Dan, I suspect this is to do with your hip, and if that's the case it might seem the thing to do now to ignore the doc, but what about in 20 years? when you can't manage the stairs etc?
just a thought, but f*** it, have a beer, have a smoke and ride on. :daumenhoch:
-
I might join a forum or two, possibly even amas a collection of bikes that I sit and tinker with periodically but look at mostly, I may start arguments with fellow forum members for little of no reason which ends in me saying I am leaving said forums...but never do.
What I would do is ignore the fucker like I have done before and double my efforts to ride whenever and wherever I can :daumenhoch:
-
luckily my doctor is a MTB downhill racer and understands that i need to be back on my bike asap
but if he told me never to ride again i'd proberly believe him
best doctor i've ever had no fookin about he sorts it quickly
-
get a second opinoin and if it was the same then id ignore it :daumenhoch:
-
well i did get this conversation yesterday from the surgeon.
my hips are being rejected. my body doesnt like them anymore , so im getting some new ones ???
so do i ride the little i do anyway at the mo i think yes
as i would imagine he will be able to slap me a new set in anyway later in life .
just wanted to know what you lot might do about 50/50 so far.
-
i'd carry on .
i already walk like a grand in practise for if my daughter grows up and has kids :)
-

Dan, since you don't ride too much, and with new hips in, i reckon you should be okay, i don't see how a little riding is all that different from day to day living, so carry on, but not 720s eh?
if in ten years at MK 2018 you are wheel chair bound, then we'll fix it up with some 48's and I'll take my turn pushing your round the track.
-
its a tough one tbh.
not everyone has the same love of riding.
if its going to effect your income for yourself and any family you may have, its deffo serious stuff. however a roll around a few times a month can't be anymore dangerous than playing 5-a-sides with the boys from work or any other popular sports.
remember again, doctors are llike any other profession(plumbers/builders etc), there are good ones and bad ones. if the doc is a quack, he'll just be looking to give himself an easy answer to as why your hips are bothering you.
tell him to ram it.
-
I'd tell him where to go... :)
-
the hip replacement is metal the cup in my pelvis is metal not the plastic ones oldies have.
the friction and what rubs of it on contact is getting into a row with my body.
its a bad fluid build up that will go bad soon and might fook me right up.
so a small op to get shot of that gooo will help then replace the metal cups to the oldies plastic version looks like the route.
work and stuffs always a worry but i just have no control over this body that keep falling to bits.
a tad gutted tbh but sh1te happens i suppose others worse of than me.
i will keep having a go when i can,i started stretching the tendons have well shrunk and doesnt much help .
-
I know where you're coming from Dan. Maybe not as serious but I need to have a 3rd disc replaced in my lower back now and while my Consultant is pretty cool (he's Dutch so he would be cool) I worry mainly about not working and not being able to play with my kids. I've not rode much of late for various reasons but I fully intend to ride more next year when my back is sorted. I get grief off the missus but she also understands that it's part of me, who I am so to speak. It's in my make-up!
However, I think if I was TOLD I couldn't ride anymore I'd be even more determined to prove them wrong, because I'm a stubborn fook like that! If I lost both my legs I'd still ride just to prove that they're talking bollox, even when I know in my own mind I'd just be kidding myself.
Does that make sense?? :-\
Daz.

Well if the opion was to become munners or keep riding I think it's a foregone conclusion in what I'd do. :LolLolLolLol:
-
yep it makes sense,im not a butt head to his decision ,its more the not being able to do something
i have done for so long , no more riding just dont sound right at my age.
-
I'd say keep riding Dan mate, know what your limitations are & just enjoy doing what you do :daumenhoch: I went out tonight to any empty car park with a flatlander & came home feeling a bit gutted I didn't do anything really but I suppose I was out on my BMX rather than sat in front of the tele ;) Just tell yourself it's good exercise :D
Good luck with it dude.
-
thinking about it ,he never rearly asked me what kind of bmx riding i did .
so i wonder if he was thinking of racing as he might have watched shanaze
at the olympics crashout, ???
-
Swap your legs for Tuff2s, Kill two birds with one stone :daumenhoch:

nah, gotta be zedsPaul, more flex
-
I was told at 16 years of age I'd never ride again, never run or play any sort of sport.
What would be the next big decision they ask you to make Dan - no more walking?
If I'm brutally honest, I don't think that riding is damaging you particularly. Compare what damage it may be doing to your happiness and general wellbeing....... throw in a little bit of doctors thoughts of self preservation.......
So.
See you on your bike soon?
-
im hearin you rob
-
Corby tomorrow afternoon Dan?
:daumenhoch:

My bro in law has had one hip done. He hasn't got the plastic type as he in his early 40's, I think it is ceramic.
Dunno if this is something different or how well they stand minor abuse. I do remember him saying he shouldn't bend his leg more than 90 degrees (tricky on a BMX) but I don't know if that was just while they were settling in after the op.
I can find out some more if it's of any help.
-
i had both hips replaced last year, titanium jobbies.
worked well for a while but now things have taken a step backwards
riding was ok but now rearly painfull but i keep plugging away.
-
I would never say "i have given up", even if i haven't ridden / haven't been able to ride since May..
just keep it as part of your life, rollround when you can, do what you can tolerate
i'm happy being able to ride to work at the moment.. I'd love to ride bmx more, but have got to the point of being honest withmyself;
i'm very tall. they're very small, and they don't give.. still love them and i know i'll do some decades when my achilles gets better. and there will always be a miniramp in the next 20 years, they aren't going anywhere...
-
i'm not meant to dan, nor am i meant to box, do aikido or any martial art, football, golf, contact/extreme sports. Does it cause me discomfort, yes, do i give a toss, yes, but it doesn't stop me except when the pain is too much. if i thought i was gonna decintergrate(sp) i might think twice, but as things go right now it's more play in haste repent at leisure. I'm not becoming a victim of my body and the doctor can sling his hook if he thinks he's got a say so, no matter what scary stories he comes out with.
it's one of them, you know your limitations or you learn them. Nobody can tell you how it is. If you have osteoperosis for example, you know your gonna break like a twig and would avoid all of the above, to quote OB1, you must do what you feel is right :LolLolLolLol:
-
i did ride the morales today :police: shhhhhh
-
like was said earlier, even if you only go out for a little 'play' on the bike 4 or 5 times a year as long as you don't overstep the mark and keep yourself resonably fit all should be fine. i was advised to do the same as my knee is jacked but despite pain, popping out of joint etc i don't want surgery. too many knee ops leading to more things going wrong and the welsh sports knee specialist even had doubts about the surgery if he was in my shoes. too many other injuries which affect me from time to time but bmx freestyle is part of me. as long as i 'm somehow involved , whether it riding, videoing, editing ,photography i'm still involved in what i love.
you can take the man out of bmx but you can't take the bmx out of the man!!
-
have you not seen the news...you can now grow your own body parts so fook it man carry on :daumenhoch:
-
so, the stubs are Ti, but the cups are nylon?
I reckon youll be reet when you get the metal cups.
if the nylon ones are chucking out swarf, your bodys bound to have a hard time with it.
-
no fruit i have ti and ti its for the young ones like me
the oldies get the nylon or ceramic
i may have to have my top cup replaced to nylon
if you wear a watch and sweat can give you spots underneath its kinda like a reaction im getting.
-
hmmm...im surprised that they didnt work.
dont get nylon, get zytel.
-
campy graphite :D
-
They told Lance Armstrong he would never race bikes again, they said the same to Alex Zanardi about racing motorcars. The human body has an amazing capacity for recovery mostly to do with mindset, I'd say continue to ride now and make damn sure you try (slowly not all at once) when you get through surgery. I hope it works out for you Dan :daumenhoch:.
-
Every thing in moderation i say mate, if you enjoy it have a roll round. gentle exercise does you good any how :daumenhoch:
-
If you was to give up riding and just sit there eating and drinking you would put on weight then the same Doc would tell you to get some exercise ::)
IMO ride when you can, be smooth and no 8 foot drops to flat :LolLolLolLol:
-
just finished my new bike today :) so it would be bad not to test it out.
-
that's the spirit; get out and ride!
-
I'd have to keep riding i think... even if it meant just rolling about!!
Most Doc's would probably say thay anyway for most injuries... not understanding the mentality of bmx!!
My Doctor is Great... really knows the sport, knows the tricks and how the injuries can occur!!
My old doctor told me to quit years ago for a broken bone in my foot!! ???
Wasn't it Hoffman who said... " can't ya just like stick a bike chain in there " talkin about his knee...
It would have to be something very dangerously serious to make most riders quit i think!!
