Me and Steve Macky have talked about this before.
It was my 40th this year and had you have said to me bitd, or 10 years ago for that matter, I'll still be riding when I'm 40 I'd have laughed at you. There's a guy who rides at Interact who is in his 50's (52 I think). Strangely enough though he didn't ride bitd because at the time he would have been too old for the sport as it was then. He took it up when his son started riding this time round and good on him I say!
So....for those of you us who are in our late 30's and early 40's. Do you still think you'll be riding in 10 years time??

I'm too old and fat to ride now but I do.
My doctor told me to reconsider the sport I do, bearing in mind I'm fat and once a week ont he bike is all the exercise I currently do, because I was a bit old for bmx.
All I can say is, I hope that in ten years i can still ride, even if it's just peg stalls and grinds and maybe some variations, like I'm learning now, that'd be great.

I started riding again last year after a 20 odd year break thanks to my son getting his first bmx... its given us a dad/son hobby and something we do together
I've also turned 40 this year and hopefully i'll still be riding in 10 years, it wouldnt happen but if my son packed it in tomorrow i'd carry on... :daumenhoch:
No 10 foot flairs or barspinning backflips though... i'll just stick with the basics and enjoy... :)

I was 41 last week and had to go out for a roll around on my T1, just basic stuff, but mentally I don't feel a lot different from when I rode BITD. If anyone told us that we'd still be riding kids' bikes at 40+ it would have been hard to believe, but times change and I reckon people are now less happy being pigeonholed into doing activities that are supposedly suitable for their age. I find that the folk I encounter are generally pretty cool about me still riding a 20" at my age, as long as they don't expect me to ride like the young nutters at the skateparks!
Rodga Harvey, the ex-Harrow skater is a good inspiration. When I was still living in Cornwall he would turn up and shred the concrete parks, he's now in his late 40s and still ripping 8)

I can't imagine not riding... :-\ don't know wot I'd do with myself??
Just hope I can still actually manage to ride!!
Dennis McCoy is still riding Amazingly at 42 - 43 yrs old... so there's hope for all!! ;)

Hope to still be riding in 10 years, as long as my body will let me. Hopefully will be driving my sons around and enjoying it with them rather than a spectator on the sidelines. If thats all I can do is watch then so be it, will ride as long as I can. The oldest rider that I know is Humps think he is 56/57 and still gets air on the track :daumenhoch:

I need to get off my ass and ride now instead of just posing around town :LolLolLolLol:...next week end I am spending some time in our carpark doing a fresher course in basic flatland stuff...hope I will still be riding in 10 years..making up for the years wasted with loose women :daumenhoch:

I read an interview a while ago where someone was asked the same question and they said as long as they could manual they would still be riding and I really like the philosiphy behind that.
Also in a recent usa ride mag there was a guy that had lost a leg and was riding with an artificial limb which kind of puts our aches and pains into perspective.

We used to get a guy with a artificial lower leg at the Dagenham race track on a regular basis, also seen a guy at Hayes race track who had a fake limb that was painted to look like a chunk had been taken out :daumenhoch:

There was an article in UK ride about a year ago about a guy with 1 leg who rides, his name's Al and I ride with him at Charlton quite often, gets about 3ft out, jumps the spine, manual rolls and tiretaps.
Bloody inspiring.
Will I be riding in 10 years at 47? I hope so, but I have given up twice before.

Evamedia - I know that guy Alex, I met him at the orginal Cantelows park where we put that big miniramp in. Sometime after that I remember reading about his accident in Ride, then saw him again at Rom a couple of years after that. Such a nice bloke, and an inspiration for sure. Say hello for me the next time you see him.
I agree with the comment that if I can still manual, I'll still ride. That's pretty much my philosophy too. A manual, a tyretap and a grind is all you need to get round a park with a smile on your face and I see no reason why I won't be doing just that when I'm 52 :daumenhoch:

Was 40 this year,went to ROM,pulled myself a 360 out of the halfpipe,[first time ridin' in 10 years]

About 7 or 8 years ago, my bike (MRD as you well know), which I had just had totally customised and spent all my money on, was stolen from my flat.
I then had to save up for nearly a year to buy my Micromachine, so sorry GoGo, but you can F UCK right off with THAT little snidey comment.

Does anyone on here get comments from parents or whatever?
It's quite a small community here and all the parents at my sons school know that i still ride bmx and think it's great :) I get a lot of questions from them about it and they always seem genuinely interested.
The local kids at the park are amazed when you say how old you are...but i'd like to think it crushes peoples perceptions of "being old"...as i remember being a kid and thinking that by the time i was 25 i would be too old for bmxing!
Actually i remember seeing a really old bloke on a bmx here when we first moved to Aus...
He must have easily been in his 60's....was on a mid school bike with 4 pegs....and a seat even higher than mine! Not seen him since though!

if you're a rider that rides and wants to ride a lot, it doesnt take you a year to save for a new bike. you would beg steal or borrow parts to get you up and running. thats just the sign of being lazy, spending money on boozing and holidays.

You definetly would have had a valid point through the eighties and into the nineties when I was still on the scene and competing a lot - beg, borrow or steal was the order of the day to keep riding.
Since then though, I, like many others have been trying to find my way to a career of some kind which naturally means less concentration on riding.
That doesn't mean that I gave up riding. I just did less of it.
I certainly don't have anything to prove (to you or anyone else) as far as bmxing is concerned.
This is just supposed to be a light hearted thread asking if we'll still be on our bikes in 10 years.
I answered honestly and said that I thought I would be.
What exactly is your problem with that?

If my body permits it then yes, When I started riding back in 80's I used to always think how cool it would be for me when I'm a pensioner to grab a kids bike and do a wheel balance on it.
