hey i was reading some old posts from people on here
about the joe kid dvd-a dvd which i really enjoyed, but
there are MASSIVE holes in it,especially from the late
80's onwards,i rode right through all the way, started
mid 80's and kept going,i saw all the changes and re
developements, but the one thing i thought was totally
rushed was all the stuff from 88 to present day-made
me really angry-they didnt care about the most important
days the days when no one rode-well a few rode, thats
when everything was revolutionised and grew into
something that progressed into what it is now,
anyway too much but just wandered if any one else thought
this or even rode through this??if someone was going to
do a uk version, you would have to focus heavily on these
dark days, cause they were so important.
-
amen
-
i thought that as well.
-
sorry lads, but joe kid is absolute shite.ive never been so bored.
and yes i think the reason was it never really bothered with the important years (popular times)
big thums down from me!
-
its a wicked film
-
I think it's great!
You have to bear in mind it is US history, not the UK (thats why it's not called Joe Kid on a Grifter/Chopper) and it was cool to see all the backgound and stuff that happened before it hit the UK shores.
Yes, it misses the UK and a lot from the 80's but we have that to look forward to in the next instalment (hopefully!)
-
bring on the uk version.
for sale joe kid dvd £13 inc postage.
-
im not talking about the uk-read the first post for more info
88 onwards is bullshit uk or no uk...sorry i dont mean to be
offensive.
i really enjoyed the early stuff too, what i am saying is....they
shouldnt have bothered with the later stuff and spent more
time on the 80's...and not called it the history of bmx.

Dead right! More important stuff happened between 90 and 95 than most people know, and i'm not just talking UK you had the most commited riders pushing the sport for little or (most of the time) no money, the level of riding we see today was started in that time period and the Rider Owned Company (Standard, S&M) took the BMX bike to amazing levels of quality and strength (a lot of o/s frames died in this period too :( ) All I know is that I was there and witnessed the true birth of BMX.
-
fookin too right, and do listen to bill hicks.

I hear what you are saying - and I guess they did rush through the last bit but hopefully thats coz it will be in another movie??
I'm sure the promos used to say history of bmx part 1??
Maybe someone should email Ride magazine and ask them when they are finishing their history of bmx series.....it started about 4 yrs ago, then stopped at 1980 with nothing else ever mentioned!

I have spoken to Tim March about this and he recons it was eventually published, and we can have the artical for the site :daumenhoch:
-
Really Billy?? I carried on subscribing for about 2 years then gave up!

Yeah, I asked him about it when Ride had the premier of Joe Kid in Bournemouth and he said it was published, and that we could use it on the site, but I think I need to remind him :daumenhoch:

dont remember seeing that before and i have most of them from last 10 years, any idea which one it was?
-
for all the stuff that joe kid missed out on you could buy the dorkin box set. that will just about cover it or if you cant spare the time i think it was dorking 10 that was a sort of collection of al the best bits of dorkin. any way that will just about set you up for the bits they missed out.
-
Totally agree a 10 second clip does not represent the years of
racing from 80-85 when it was in its heyday.
-
and why not
-
i think it was brillant best dvd ever made on bmx brillant oldschool stuff. but i think they should make joe the kid 2 with the rest
of the footage or now make a british version.they can only do so much with the time and money they had all my mates are hard co motocross lads who had bmx then and they can not get a nuff of it .they are getting bmxs again they were are heroes them days it rules. :yahoo_silent:
-
kellogs 84 wacked school to be there most of them riders were there. i am now 36 and its still one off the best days of my life.
them riders were some of the legands of bmx. i would not change thing that dvd is just right.it really dose bring a tear to my japs eye
-
36 stone lad??? :Aresehole:

I think it's very easy to critique the finished thing; it was never going to be perfect but at least someone had a crack at it. As Lazarou said the years when it was dead as fook, those were the times when things really, really kicked off. I returned to it at the end of 93 and was, and remain astounded by what is possible. There is a whole filmsworth just following 1989-90 onwards, and a completely different sort of film also.
I thought Joe Kid was good, just like I thought Dogtown was good. I bet there's plenty of skaters out there who feels similarly towards that film..., but i think its cool that these films were made at all :)
I'd like to see 'The History of Rider Owned Companies' - now that might be the film we all expect to see 8) :)
-
Joe Kidd is American, they started this game long before we did so what do you expect? if you want a film about the British scene you're gonna have to make it yourself.
I think Hoffman's book encapsulates the dead years somewhat, i rode a bit through the summer of 91 or 92 i can't remember which and i still kick myself for not keeping it up. That whole underground scene. i used to see a couple of the guys that i rode with as a kid still out and about on their bikes in Dartford in the late 80's early 90's and i'd always say hello and ask them how the scene was going and where they were riding. Trouble is i was to busy being cool and getting high to really commit.
BMX was always in my heart all the way through but i think i was more worried about what others thought about it and it took me till my 30's to grow up enough to not give a monkeys what others thought. hehe now i want to do it but my body says no. mid life crisis, you gotta love it.

Prolly off topic here lads but BobAcid strikes a chord with me here. I sold my pride and joy to buy an Armani jumper just cos all my mates were becoming "casuals" back in the day. I never wanted to give up BMX, it just happened. Peer pressure I suppose. I got into motocross three years ago by mistake, broke a leg, found ebay now I love the bikes without an engine. Still love my football (off to the game later today) but bikes are in my blood. I find the whole stigma thing about 20inch bikes fascinating. Some guys on here go out after dark to practice tricks! Sod what everyone else thinks. Ride. It's the best fun you can have with your clothes on. Not seen this dvd so I'll shut up but a Brit flick about BMX would be great. Christ, I can't get enough of Road Fools! Would love to see some footage from 1980s. Cheers, JB
:)
