Here is a little something I found over the weekend. It’s a modification I did to a stem. No big deal now, but it was new at the time.
I never really liked the top plate on a gyro so when I changed over to a 1 1/8th frame, my old 1” gyro top plate didn’t fit the forks and I was forced to do something about it (“oversized” gyros weren’t all that available at the start of 1 1/8th, hence the 1” clamp-on forks). I got a stem (an early, square edge clamp on redneck, without the curved cut-out underneath for gyro clearance), and drilled and tapped the sided of it for cable adjusters. It was no where near as neat as the gyro friendly stems (with the built in gyro plate) that came out a bit later, but I really didn’t want to use the gyro top plate.
The only mistake I made was that I put the adjusters too high on the stem so the lower part of the gyro cable was too short to reach the gyro itself! Luckily, I used to shorten my lower cable anyway using clamp on nipples (well, spoke nipples and a vice), so I just left more inner cable above the nipple to cope with it.
Like I said, not a big deal now but I liked it at the time. Once the gyro friendly rednecks were out, I got one of them and they were much better.

cool i like homemade stuff :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: sharp edged rednecks are 8) 8) 8) alex as you like to make/modify things to solve problems with your bike do u rekon you could make a cassette that engages and feels like a freewheel? its the only thing about new school bikes that i dont like :knuppel2: :knuppel2:

alex as you like to make/modify things to solve problems with your bike
Na, not any more. No time, and not the same need as back then. My bike works, straight out of the box so Im happy to go with it (Even if the cassette does click like its going to slip from time to time)

was your stem inspiration for gyro friendly rednecks?
No, I dont think so. I didnt really show it to anyone, and I dont think rednecks were the first stem to come with a built in gyro plate. I forget what stem was, but I do remember being pleased that S&M did a GFR Redneck .... although that might have been just so I could get rid of my home made one! :-[

Mr Leech yet another of your quality solutions/inventions.
This should be in the 'British Innovations to the BMX industry' thread...
I honestly believe you are more resposible for the state of BMX components that are around today than you give yourself credit for.

Hey, come on. Who hasnt cut down their bars and accidently cut the SAME side down twice? :crazy2:
(Well, no one nowadays as no one cuts their bars down any more)
