Title: Has every one given up on old school racing?????????????????
Post by: Tony 1-4 on January 06, 2009, 09:25 PM
Is it me or does there seem to be a lot of negativity about old school for the coming year? Most threads seem to have replies that people are not gonna bother with it as they are moving up to cruiser.

It would seem a real shame after having fought for so long to get the class recognised for every one to suddenly ditch it.

My little brother got me interested in the sport again but not until the end of the summer. I know it's not the same in winter and I admit to having not gone to some race meets because it's bloody cold but I am (or was) really looking forward to my first full summer series with the old school boys this year.

Can we have a little poll jsut to see roughly how many are still interested? Just relpy even if you're unsure as to whether you're gonna race old school or cruiser in the summer.

I'll gladly start it off and it doesn't have to be a huge reply, just something like this

Yes - old school - East Anglia/South region

(Just interested to see guys and gals, that's all!)

and attract the new too  :daumenhoch:

I'm just about to start, so it would be a shame if there wasn't any racing in the future  :(

I went to the Southern Series Race at Dagenham just before Christmas, and there seemed to be a good old school turn out. It's what made me think it would be good to have a go.

I didn't realise there was a problem ?

Doing it big style in 2009.

Northern Region - done two races already in the winter and it's cracking - like meeting up with old mates already.

I can personally see the attraction in Cruiser - I like new technology but this wont stop me putting a full year in Old School.

well for me

i aint raced for a few months for personal reasons and have secretly been hoarding the odd bit here and there to build up the ultimate north region smoothy splatterer

so with a bit of luck and a lot of love from the northern guys i hope to be back on the gate in march

i now have 2 months to get my big fat ugly ginger ass into some sort of competative condition

i used to race cruiser ,but slowly turned to the dark side for a laff there is no pressure on how brill or how shite you are ,,,itys who you are and the love you have for ridin the bikes you love from yesteryear

see all you guys up north soon

love and peice love and piece

russty knacker :-* :-*

Everyone needs to stop worrying about it - the vibe is still there, the weathers shite and the winter series are never as popular as the summer ones....

come spring everything will be cool as fonzy!

Title: Re: Has every one given up on old school racing?????????????????
Post by: moley on January 07, 2009, 12:58 AM
We only had 12 races at Bradford!!

With most classes lumped in with each other!!

Winter is shite for racing.  No one wants to do it!!

Even the die hards have a good whinge!!

Summer will be better and people should start coming out of the woodwork!!

The North was always recognised so we always had the expense of joining BCF.  The extra few quid they are forcing on us now, to buy silver memberships haven't gone down well either!!

But everyone who wants to race in the summer is in the same boat!!

The craic is still there and as always the racing is great!

Hopefully interest will start picking up in spring!  :daumenhoch:

in the real up north. we have a small but faithful band of bmx brothers. summer or winter

believe it or not we have attracted more riders this winter than last summer.

last week we had a full OS gate  :LolLolLolLol: and that was with 3 of us not riding

we'll be at it no matter what. even planning a few north region pillaging parties as we did last year

keep the faith lads it will come good when the weather improves.

marc :daumenhoch:

p.s any of you guys are welcome to join us at anytime of the year, just let us know. ask JTSmooth i'm sure he'll tell you we made him very welcome when he came to play ;)

I'm not planning on racing any old school meets anymore. Not to say I won't, just not planning on doing it. Unless the wife decides to race at Hersden then I'm not planning on racing there anymore.

Old school will attract new racers and the series will be still enjoyable to watch but the thing with it is for those of us that have done it for the last 4 years it's time to progress. It's a bit like this site really, it's more about new school now than old school because everyone has progressed.

BMX is a journey we all make, with the starting place being old school, it's just that some of us have been travelling longer than others and are further up the road.  ;)
Title: Re: Has every one given up on old school racing?????????????????
Post by: dialledbikes on January 07, 2009, 09:03 AM
I wish the old school series had existed when I started racing again in 2006 as it would have been less of a baptism of fire than going straight into 30-39 cruiser and coming last every lap.

I love watching the old school races and seeing those lovely old bikes getting used.  However, I can understand why most of the top OS riders from the last few years have now decided to get new school bikes and race cruiser.  Those guys will make 30-39 cruiser a really good class again, as it's been a bit flat for the last few seasons.

Old school is a great way to get back into BMX and hopefully there'll always be enough to fill a gate at every race as more people come back.  I'll still do the odd OS race here and there if I get chance.

I think Zippy sums it up nicely actually.

I haven't given up old school but main focus will be on Cruiser this summer, but am hoping that once the fitness level is up I'll be OS racing in the south again later in the year.

Its still going to be a strong part of the series at Hersden. No liscence needed. Just pre register on rad, turn up and have a laugh. Shame there are one or two didillusioned with the group. Maybe when racing gets going in the summer those guys will change their minds.

So you are retiring from Hersden full stop?  these are the only summer OS meetings i will defo do (though I may do the odd round in the OSS Summer) also the missus is defo up for it (once she is competetive - her words not mine) and has a shiny new steed waiting for the dust. So we will be defo making the trip down to the Kent coast again this year.  Come on mate you've got to defend your title.....  those berms have your name on them.... :LolLolLolLol:

the rest Zippy - very poetic mate....

lytham, manchester and bradford was extreme weather at its most fookin miserable, below freezing, horizontal rain swimming pool finish lines  ;D and at worst we had a full gate (bradford) but the dudes just keep this northern series rockin, we are by far the biggest class at every meeting, its fookin smashin up north :daumenhoch:
Title: Re: Has every one given up on old school racing?????????????????
Post by: moomin on January 07, 2009, 12:30 PM
The simple answer to this is NO

As Si said there's a natural progression on from Old School, and thats exactly what has happened, there was bound to be surges and lulls for weather etc, as riders become more confident they will move on, it's got nothing to do people losing interest, more broadening their horizons.

I dont think recent fallings out have helped in all honesty hence why we have taken time out and tried to allow some time for the dust to settle :-\.

We will probably be at some of the races this year but have pretty much decided that we want the boys to enjoy this year hense we wil be taking them to the Nationals and Brits. :daumenhoch:

Old school's still good for me, with injury, yeah got the cruiser bug now, but i believe 30-39 class is a lot tougher than people realise - sure up your game and move on, if it wasn't for the knee thats where i was heading, but now prob old school till surgery, then old school till fully healed...depends which is easier and more comfortable to ride with a busted knee.

come the good weather they'll be out again :daumenhoch:

but gotta admit ive been looking at cruisers for next year i know im the slowest at old skool and will be at cruiser but i love the sport and just wana ride also my harry races so i gotta get involved rather than just watch

fingers crossed its not just the 3 of us u sam me each week in the ea or else cruiser it shall be  :daumenhoch:

you lot can always come back to the south.... we still love ya..

this is the other problem that no one has raised is that Sam (quite rightly) wants to support the EA region and therefore the 3 of you will be racing that series along with John Paul of the Braintree track  - its just the way it is - there arent enough riders to spread over two regions that are pretty close to each other...

Ya can still race with 2 riders!!

In the North any class with 3 or less riders might be merged into another class, then points are split back out into each class!!

So there is no reason not to race.

And if you merge with a girls class then eloopnai might try a bit harder!!  :LolLolLolLol:

Ade!!  are you coming to Crewe?

Crooch needs his ass kicking!!  :knuppel2:

Are we just talking Regional/National or Club racing?

If it's club racing I'd say don't be put off from riding your OS bike if you want to amongst the rest of the riders in whatever your age bracket is.

Particularly if your just getting back into it the actual bike won't be your limiting factor anyway.

As for me I'll be riding my OS bike whenever I feel like it in whatever class will take it.

All the best

Steve

I'm hoping it's just the cold that kept you from coming to Braintree on sunday Ian. You live just down the bloody road Sam tells me. It was just the 2 of us again at Braintree. I was gonna race but went round twice in practice with a sore throat and after the two laps felt like I had razor blades in my throat. Sam took both his bikes and was busting to ride his new Redline cruiser so I pulled out and let him go it alone on the cruiser. He mixed in with the seniors and very well he did too!

I'll come out to play when I can. And come last sometimes. I don't care who slags it off or whatever. Life's too short. Might have a play on a cruiser too. Wife is having a baby in two months so I'll be out less over the summer. But still doing what I can. Let's not worry about it - old school will always have a place providing people have the right attitude.

And new school bikes are all a bit toss anyway aren't they? Better a bit of chrome around the place.

I havent raced any OS races yet, Im in the south (london) so im planning/hoping to do as many as possible that I can get to.  I dont have a car so am relying on a mate to drive me there.  Its been 14 years since I was on a track.. Im ready and my bikes ready.  So yea im keen, ready to rock!  Hopefully the 25th an January will be my first one!
Whos coming to that?  I cant remember where it was and http://www.ossbmxracing.co.uk/ hasnt been updated.

Glen, there's a winter regional at Royston on the 17th (weekend after this one). Its about half an hour from Enfield. If you can get on the overground to any of the 3 Enfield stations (Enfield Town, Enfield Chase or Gordon Hill), I can pick you up and take you there.
Tony.

as so many people are going on to race cruisers,i think a o/s shootout at the home of oldschool  (hersden)is on the cards for the  end of the season.once nationals and brits are out of the way you can all come and ride the bikes that got you back into this great sport.think a trophy of whopping proportions will be in order.

I must've neglected to visit this for too long, as I didn't know there was a problem. I'm one of the ditherers, who fancy racing a bike but can't decide between 4cross, old-school or cruiser :-\. I was advised to go for cruiser, but have started commuting to work on a Brompton so am getting used to a little bike again ;). Add to that an amount of pussyness on a bike to be expected of a 36 year old barrister :'(, and an unshakable desire to buy one of the 25th anniversary Super Tuff Burners, and you''ll see I'm in a state :crazy2:.

Old School appeals because it would give me something to do with a Super Tuff, and I imagine it's guys like myself who fancy racing a bit without it becoming more than just a bit of fun. So, can anyone give me arguments to help persuade the wife that it's a good idea?

Stick a Wanted advert in the Wanted Section.

If your a lanky then a longer TT might be in order as they are more stable and the geometry is more forgiving!!

What region are you in, barge?

South - Portsmouth.
I've got a cruiser and a mission to get fit enough to do some club racing at Gosport this year.
I also have a re-issue PK ripper looptail that I'm putting mostly new school stuff on. Hoping to race this in the 20 inchers as well! I'm riding to work now, so getting 15 miles a day in...

I'd like to do old school, cos I am and also cos I'm not the full-on race type, I'm happy just doin the stuff.

Thanks for the encouragement. East Anglia a bit far from Cardiff for frequent trips though.

Don't mock the Brompton - very cool bikes, good for one's bike handling 8)

Are there any tracks in Wales?

There's one at Parc Bryn Bach, Tredegar, but it's not too newby friendly - quite tough :-[

I'm told that Bristol is better - not Wales, but close.

That's encouraging, insofar as it goes, but is this person signed up to this website?

Are there any other expressions of interest from people in Wales or South West coming through?

Do people bring bikes for sale to the races?
Just wondering where I get a reasonably priced OS (£300) bike from?

I was beginning to think I was the only one around here.

My trouble is, I'm undecided between OS and 4X. OS has a number of things going for it, but I'd need to buy a bike (just got an MTB and a folder for commuting at present), which would be happy to do if there are gonna be some races within a reasonable distance.

You riding much? If so, where? I did a trip to parc bryn bach, which I subsequently learnt was tough for someone who hasn't jumped over anything on a bike for over 20 years :-[. I've heard that Bristol's track is better.

Any more people in Wales/South West here?

Start a new thread calling for welsh OS Riders!!

Maybe one on BMX Talk too!!

See if you can generate some interest.

How many regions are they and what are they called?

Hi mate

I have a little pedal about when the weather is good, but only got my bike out the attic last summer after 22 odd years.

I went to Bryn Bach one sunday with the enermy, but there was a meet there so only managed a quick roll aroud the track, but must abmit the second half of the track was a bit much after such a long lay off....& Im far from being fit  :2funny: Got to talk to a fe of this site there, as ther was a lot of interest in my OS bike, even the youngsters knew what it was which suprised me, & some warned me not to ride it as I would brake it on the new track  :2funny:...peskey kids  :D

Ive ment up with an old mate from BITD through this site (Welsh Denny), but he rides freestyle, so have been to a couple of events local...great to catch up, & his memory for name etc is amazing...a propper trip down memory lane  8)

Where did you used to ride BITD & what area are you in ??

well you're one up on me having an OS bike already. I've heard that the Bristol track is easier for a beginner (forgive me if I've said that already).

So, if I get an OS bike and learn to get over the jumps, how many of us are there for OS South Wales/South West?
