Title: Tips please - getting a bearing retainer on a new set of forks ?
Post by: brass monkey! on January 18, 2009, 08:53 PM
any tips on getting one of the little round retainers that the lower ballrace sits on (forks/headset)? this one is tight and i don't want to damage the forks with a hammer and screwdriver, like i normally do....forks cost a lot you see  ;) :D

sorry for the hopeless explaination, hopefully someone will know what i mean... ::)

:) The good old crownrace problem. If you have a tube/pipe or even an old 1 1/8 stem that fits over the steerer, then give slide the crownrace on & give the tube a good whack or 2...

Plonk it in a cup of boiling water for 5 minutes, the metal expands just enough for it to slip on. Use pliers so you dont burn yourself :daumenhoch:

If its too tight, it will split, they are not as tough as you'd think.
Both methods suggested are the best option tho.
