After seeing Pickles lovely chrome Hyper I want to remove the purple paint to reveal chrome :smitten:
or is there any reason, i haven't considered, not to do it?
loads of people have told me nitromors is the tool for the job, but how long for????
and is special prep required, other than full strip down of bike?
sure i've seen threads about it in the past, but just had a search through and kind find anything :'(
-
Nitromors is the stuff but the equivalent homesbase B&Q stuff is just as good. just slap it on and leave it for a few mins - you will soon see it work. get a wire brush and away you go....
dont get any on your skin!!! shed paint that flys off when you are stripping it also burns!!!!
agree the chrome will look better than that purple - thats so 1991!!! :LolLolLolLol:
-
Hmmmmmmm chrome Hyper! :smitten:
i have decided that i'm keeping mine......i have managed to pull back my xmas spending so no real need to part with her. i think they're a lovely bike but not very well thought of over here.
i am going to do mine up a little too for the coming summer season :daumenhoch:
-
would like to upgrade a few components, and make me enjoy looking at it as much as i enjoy riding it, but lack of pennies, makes nitro the cheapeast and easiest change
and does anywhere do day glo coloured cables and lever covers, looking at pics of my ta from 85-86, and would like to inject some cheap colour
-
i'm sure you can get Oddy cables in day glo colours? as for lever covers......PM Firebird and have a word with him :daumenhoch:

si wont the wire brush scratch the chrome, and don't tell me the obvious....gently...everyone knows i'm a bull in a china shop with no patience :LolLolLolLol:

Is it deffo chrome underneath? Seen a few cases where people get chromoly and chrome plate confused, then get miffed after stripping thei9r frame to reveal nice dull metal!
-
have it on good authority that in the 90's was a bit of a thing for painting over chrome to get like a pearlescent finish???
but to be safe will try under one of the rear drop-outs first in case.
I know in dull weather it just looks like a gay purple colour, in the summer sun its like a brilliant purple, thats really nice, but i don't like the colour when its in the garage, and can't colour co-ordinate anything, as purple parts are hard to source and when you do very expensive.
thanks for the tip off.

some one told me they are the same as the free agent limo - which makes them pretty dam good in my book :daumenhoch:
also if your having the paint off with nitromoors and its chrome underneath
i wouldn't use a wire brush to get the frazzled goo off
as that prob would mark the chrome
need something softer or less likely to damage the chrome surface
have you thought about just stripping the rear triangles paint off ?
see how that looks ?

i put mine up against Lee Shureys old Limo and the front triangles were exactly the same! in fact it was just the seat stays that were slightly diferent.
i love mine and it rides real nice! :daumenhoch:
-
cool
cheers for confirming that
prob all out the same factory then
i love my limo too :daumenhoch:
-
I think stodgy has those cables in the rad shop
-
Don't use a wire brush! should only need a lil poking and proding with a stiff paint brush etc :daumenhoch: dont use a wire brush you'll scratch it to fook! :'(

how do you mask against nitromors, surely it'd eat through masking tape???
and pickle....i love my hyper rides fantastically, wish i could get the thumbs up to bling it up from er indoors, then i think i'd probs love it more than i did my TA bitd :smitten:
-
have stripped it, just washed Peckham regional off the frame, there are quite a few battle scars in the paint, looking around rear dropouts paint has worn away, and i'm not sure its chrome under there....unless its gone dull, or the paint dulls it
anybody got any ideas on this, cos don't look like chrome to me, and only chrome polish i got is the crap stuff from halfrauds, which wouldn't bring it up if it was, as i thought i'd have a check on the naked bits
-
Keep it purple, Neil. There's thousands of chrome bikes out there but not that many purple ones. Purple shows a bit of character and reflects the era quite well.
-
Mike, the colour bugs the crap outta me, would give my right arm for a decent shiny chrome finish, might be different if it was like intense blue, then id be larry with a huge smile, easy to polish up and nice on the eye, but purple????
-
just polished up quite a large area of paint flake on brake bridge, appears to be chrome :smitten:
and if not, will have no choice but to get an SBD intense blue job on it, apart from the arguements about cost, win win situation ;D
-
What you should do is put a small blob of nitromors on your finger and gently tap the back of someones hand - so they dont realise- wash your hands then sit back and laugh ;)
-
:LolLolLolLol:
tested under brake bridge....yippe chrome, stripped one rear chain stay, yippee loking good
stripped one side of rear drop out :'( :'( :'( :'( bare metal
can i spray that with autosol to stop rusting and leave raw, or what suggestions are there??????????
-
save up get it chromed...
-
finally done, and thrown back together, just waiting for decals from del, then decide on the chrome crank of my cruiser or a twin pinch flite
what do you all think????

i love it, but makes it look even longer :crazy2:
chrome wasn't as good as i'd hoped, but no worse than a survivor.
-
ive seen that seat before lol looks good mate
-
yeah didn't wanna overdo the black if i'd put the black gt seat and post back on......also hopefully got my old DK black rims spokes and hubs coming end of this week, 48 spoke so bit heavy, but strong, having 14mm axles lathed down to 11mm then new thread put on em. Lets hope they know what they are doing.
-
got a chrome 901 rear brake here if you want it
-
thought that was on the Navajo???? otherwise i may well take you up on that, as pitbull works very well, but get grief for it :LolLolLolLol:
-
no taken off navajo getting black one for that
-
leave the pitbull on - no one gives you grief for it..... its a caliper brake - it works - end of!
think i prefer it purple though.....
-
pitbulls fine :daumenhoch:
i've never had anyone moan about mine

i prefer it chrome, or would do if it was chrome all the way, and chrome was perfect :'( you know one of them moments, where its too late to turn back, but you realise maybe shouldn't have done it......but i think its nicer to look at now then when it twas purple, can look at purple anytime, not many races i come back from without bruising somewhere :LolLolLolLol:
-
looking good there Mr Magoo! very nice frames the Metro :daumenhoch:
-
chrome work is survivor cond, but think its much better than purple.........love my Hyper now :smitten: and the welds, really nice build quality too.
-
and other than yours and mine i don't know of any others on here?? ???
-
dunno about yours pickle, but think mines been round the block on here a few times :LolLolLolLol:
-
not sure on mine.....i bought mine from Russ (MADDOG) but don't know who had it before?
i must get better pictures as these don't do it justice

heres mine latest photo, after changing the wheels....................................
BUT I HAVE A MAJOR PROBLEM, AND NEED ADVISE :'(
after i stripped it i went to a wet race meeting, and all the "chrome" tarnished and pitted badly. I had to strip her down and spent 8 hours with autosol to get her 90% nice again, and took the above photo................but it was spitting when i took the photo, three hours later go to the garage and those few minutes on the drive and she's all tarnished again :'( :'( :'(
I'm told its cos its nickel coat and not chrome, can't afford a re-chrome, don't particularly want to powder her, but will at last resort, but wondered if there is any product i can put on her to stop this happening again.
I do have one other thought, i may part company with frame and forks, cos although i think she's a lovely ride, at 5'10" she is a little long for me.
So any good, cheap, advise out there???
-
Well thats the first time ive heard some one say an old school frame is a little too long.....
have you thought about lacquer? or how ever you spell it...
-
yeah, sonic told me to clear all marks and laquer, but some one else told me it wont stick cos too shinney???
probably wouldn't be so long if i changed that redline stem, but can't be arsed, easier to change frame and forks....lol
but would rather keep as is, but cant keep wearing out my w@..king arm polishing off the marks :LolLolLolLol:
-
kind of got mine sorted now
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/b339/robertbransby/metro015-2.jpg)
-
very nice, just wanna make me jealous, cos you can play in the wet :LolLolLolLol:
-
Have you tried a carnuba wax or something similar like Meguiars Tech Wax? A good few coats should give it a quality seal and retain the shine :daumenhoch:.
-
never heard of it....where would i get that from, and i'll give it a try...cheers.
-
im sure a boat shop sells the wax as they use it on em
