Title: Riding Brakeless, For or Against
Post by: lodge on January 29, 2009, 09:34 PM
I know this thread has been done before but after the "how low can you go" thread provoked such a strong response to slammed seats and riding brakeless I thought it was worth debating again.

Love or hate it lets here it.

Daz you know me too well  :LolLolLolLol:

I have told him that if he has no brake then he`s not allowed out in the street on his bike, but he got around it by taking it off when he was at a skatepark  :knuppel2:

And to make it worse it`s a mint Fly brake, and he still hasn`t got it back yet  :knuppel2:

I'm going to sound very old and sensible saying this but I'm against it - think its dangerous not to the rider but to people around them.

Seen too many close calls at Skateparks - someone changes their line at the last moment, incoming rider unable to stop. Wham!!!

Sorry forgot to answer the original question, overall I say against brakeless. Been to rOm and seen the kids riding round brakeless, some of them should still have stabilisers let alone take there brakes off and they ride to and from the park.
There are some great riders that can do it and make it look good. Suppose it's the age old argument 'How do you get experience without doing it' :)

i'm against it.......just don't see the need.  i know people say that it stops them pulling out or slowing down for tricks but just don't pull your lever!  i've been to a few parks with my lad on his skate board when there where kids there with no brakes......they were worst riders than me (and that's saying something!) so i asked them why didn't have brakes...their answer was "because that's how people have them"  :idiot2:  i told him to put a fookinjg brake on or he'll get killed riding around the streets like that!

yes i sounded old and just like my dad  :LolLolLolLol:

well I run two brakes, however I believe for the new school kids riding brakeless probably teaches them better bike control and judgement of the spped they are doing and the spped they require.

Mark Atkins will be along saying how it wants to execute the next brakeless rider that runs into him in a few minutes I expect, but perosonally I've never had any issues or even close shaves with brakeless riders, let's face it, they aren't reckless are they, they don't want to get hurt anymore than anyone else.

So I'm neither for it or against it, however I'm pro-choice, if it's your choice then go for it, if not who cares, it's ALL good.

i hear what your saying Joe.....but if i come off my bike and hurt myself, that's my fault......if someone runs into me without brakes and i get hurt....that isn't!

mind you saying that, the good riders that do it are fooking superb!  and a joy to watch  :daumenhoch:

still think nose picks look much better with a front brake (ALEX)  :4_17_5:

its bloody dangerous  and should be a law to get brakes back on even in private venus
there is no real need not to have them even if they dont use them .

brakes or no brakes, it's all good, no brakes makes biking more like skateboarding and means new levels of bike control need to be developed

i disagree , even with the urge to pull them suckers, they can/should still be attached.
they can be working only a little but will stop you safer.

Ashley Charles, no brakes, ridiculous control

Personally, I don't have many tricks, and I'd lose most of them without a back brake, so I'm keeping mine

Im all about 2 brakes but I can kinda see some point in having none. It makes things simple, only one way to try stuff and thats to commit (eg, disasters to 180 ... should I pull the front brake?)

I also really like the idea of having no levers. I ALWAYS have my finger on my rear lever but it would be better if I didnt, no question. Apart from it getting in the way when you tweak tricks, there is always the chance it will catch you when you crash or when on your clothes to make you crash.

Then there is the brake Tourettes. Im very guilty of rolling up to something and thinking Im going to fast. I give the brake a little check, maybe a nice little skid ... and then find im going too slow!  :idiot2:

But above all, I leave both brakes on because, like Evamidea said:
I don't have many tricks, and I'd lose most of them without brakes

still think nose picks look much better with a front brake (ALEX)  :4_17_5:

Oh, and thanks for the props, but you dont see many front brakes around these days.

plus points

1. neat looking bike
2. no levers to catch your hands/clothes on
3. lighter bike (although not by much)
4. need to learn new way of riding

negative points

1. unsafe - more likely to crash or loop out
2. need to learn new way of riding

i tried it on 2 occasions about 3 years apart i guess  for about 1 week  just needed more time i  but was scarry.
bmx wouldnt be where it is today if it wasn for people junking them ,i still think riders could dial in so much more wih them
so i dont rearly have the answer  a bit of both but that doent work either.

but i can do more tricks with the brake than without so i would rather the brake

your brake levers can injure you. FACT
(see my manky yellow hand for proof)

but then how many injuries might you get without brakes?

i think bikes look better without brakes and as others have said there are some very good brakeless riders out there,

and i admire as much anyone who can operate two brakes.

as for me i found i am having enough fun with just my rear brake, not enough skill to go brakeless or two brakes yet.

Some great comments dudes here's my take:

I love the brakeless thing even though I ride with two brakes myself I would love to go brakeless but I'm just not good enough to justify it.
I think good brakeless riders are just awesome to watch so much flow and the rate of progression is incredible.
I dont think any riders should start out brakeless or go brakeless untill they have a high level of ability such as being able to manual consistently without touching their brake, the amount of brakeless riders I see rolling down a transition on their back wheel and ending up on their arses makes me laugh and think why are you putting yourself through that.
I love the clean look of brakeless bikes.
I'm on the fence with the collision thing because as long as I can remember riders have been smashing into each other even when they run brakes, is it not just skatepark etiquette that causes many of these collisions? also most skateparks do have a at least one brake policy but they dont seem to enforce it I'm guessing because they can't afford to.

Please have a look at Chase Hawks riding in this vid (red bike) now thats brakeless flow as it should be :smitten:

I will fit TWO brakes to my forks, TWO to the rear, and add a coaster brake too.
And also do footjam nosepicks while having both front brakes on at the same time.
Anyone care to join me?

I've been wondering about removing my brake for a while now cause I like the clean look of a bike. For the past few weeks I've tried as much as I can to ride with the 'death grip' - without a finger hovering over the lever. Its really difficult to get used to.And absolutly terrifying on vert or going a bit lairy on an air.For some reason having the hovering finger makes me feel safer. Its just like my blanket.I think I'll stick with a brake.

I took my brake off 2 years ago as an experiment because of brake tourettes!, i got fed up pulling it in an air or approaching a quarter and would end up talking to myself annoyed after pulling it!

i spent a couple of weeks riding my local park when it was empty to get used to it, it didnt take that long and it was so much more fun. Give it a try you might enjoy it, plus relearning ice pics, tyre taps etc is fun and makes them easy if you decide to put your brake back on.
I really try hard not to stick my foot  on the tyre, you dont really need to stop that way you can depump or skid or just plan where you are going better in the park

i can see why everyone gets fed up with brakeless riders, all the young kids copy and do it and they have no idea how to control a bike, let alone one without a brake

theres a lot of negativity on here towards brakeless riders, its obviously not for everyone, at the end of the day riding is about having fun and curently i find having not to think about pulling on a lever more fun (except if riding dirt, then it goes back on :LolLolLolLol:)

I think for bike handling its a great thing to do and when I am less shite than I am now I will be tempted (perhaps), but in a crowded skatepark with people of all abilities then it could lead to accidents, especially for those who are new to park ettiquette or have no ability on what is the ettiquette.

This debate will run and run....

I've a lot of admiration for the young un's that ride brakeless and are good with it, some of em progress in leaps and bounds without brakes but there are always the few that are just copying their mates and are proper sketchy... an accident waiting to happen...

A couple of  brakeless riders at interact...

Agreed they need a brake to start with then take it off when they feel confident enough to do without

I've held off talking about this, 'cos I felt I didn't really have enough experience to comment, but the more I've thought about it, and the more recent vids I've watched, I've developed an appreciation for no brakes.

For me, the best thing about (good) brakeless riders is what they can do on the front wheel.
Watched the Levi's DVD a few times and there's one of the dudes (excuse me for not remembering who!) who hang fives this massive ledge, must be over 100 feet long, at full speed (cos he can't dab a brake) -  truly amazing -  and some of the front wheel manuals are brilliant too.

I can see how brakeless will make you better - more flow is one thing - but the front wheel balance is just awesome.
Personally I'm not sure if the look of a brakeless bike is better or not, but the skill levels it produces get my vote.
Since I've got a spare bike at the mo, I might just give it a go....

Lets face it, I doubt if there's one of us on here that hasn't ridden brakeless at some point in our lives, it just that, like me, most of us have got brake biased riding hardwired into our brains and bodies, and that's the real problem for older riders, not whether it's 'cool' or not....

Awesome dude...  :daumenhoch:

From the vans uk tour dvd, should have been more footage of him shredding the bowl at unit 23

On the subject of brakes/no brakes my lad had a collision with someone at interact on wednesday night, both of em were ok but it would have been a shitesight worse if either of em had no brakes...

Every bike I've ever had has been fitted with brakes, I've only got one bike with a single brake and that's because it wasn't supplied with the other one.
I am used to having two brakes, or at least brakes and have no wish to go brakeless, partly due to what I'm used to and partly due to fear.
If someone wants to go brakeless then fine, but they clear their own mess up when they crash...if they crash into someone as a result of having no brakes and get the shit kicked out of them, then tough, I have no sympathy.

If person is not in full control of their bike, or skilled enough to ride brakeless safely then I would suggest, brakes might help.

And for those who go brakeless because everyone else does without regard for the consequences, I suggest a new trend to go Bikeless as well as brainless  :daumenhoch:

on a safety point of view, i would say unless you take your bike to the place to be ridden in the back of a car it's a definate no. 2 lads round here on mat black bikes with dark clothing fly around without the ability to stop at all in the dark. I have nearly mowed down a granny swerving to miss the skinny fookers and they have nearly mowed me down at the end of my own garden path. It will be sad to hear about one being flattened by a bus or something.
