so we were out last night at our local and got talking to another couple.
after about 10 mins it turned out that the bloke used to race as a kid BITD and
even better his dad used to own a bike shop in Cornwall
the night got better when his parents joined them for a drink. i couldn't help myself and
had to start grilling him ;) apparently his shop was in mousehole in Cornwall and he sold
everything from rippers to kuwi, skyways, rickmans he just kept reeling the names off
i was like a little kid ;D
the best bit though was when he told me he was a GT agent and his son always raced them.
i was telling him that i was restoring a pro performer when he told me something that nearly
made me spill my pint !!
apparently in 85 or 86 (he couldn't remember ::) ) GT was about to launch the "eddie fiola" signature frame
he seems to remember they had built prototypes and was going to release them but never did :'( :'(
he seems to think there was problems between gt and fiola so they never made it to the shops.
but there was at least 2 bikes built one yellow one and one blue one.
anyone ever heard this before? its news to me??
-
don't spose your talking about Dave Harvey are you?
-
to be honest i never got his dads name. the son was called mark :)
it was just a random meeting of a couple in a pub on a saturday night ;D
-
The bloke was talking out of his arse! :idiot2: :uglystupid2:
-
The bloke was talking out of his arse! :idiot2: :uglystupid2:
he seemed to be genuine and had no reason to lie ???
what makes you think its bull ?? ??
-
are they in his loft?
-
let's put it this way,Dave used to have the Mousehole bmx centre, then moved to Bread street in Penzance and later moved to New street in Penzance.Dave is about 5ft 4 and is an ex miner.
-
Ex miner? - he'll be keeping them in his cellar then :LolLolLolLol:
-
he did used to go quite deep!
-
sounds like it could be genuine, why not? they must be hundreds of stories like this that have wilted away with time...
-
if it is Dave we're talking about, trust me,he knows his stuff!
-

It's kind of like saying was there ever any discussion of welding fork and chainstay standers onto the frames. Lots of things were discussed. But were NEVER going to happen.

I didn't say I think it was bull

sounds about right :daumenhoch:
we are an old mining town so he could have links up here ;)
who ever he was it was really nice to sit and chat to someone who was
in the know BITD. I have no reason to disbelieve. and in retrospect i cant believe
fiola never had a sig frame ??? ??? so does anyone know why he never got one??
id love to see a pic of these mythical frames :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:
-
Doesn't sound like bull to me, that bloke sounds like he knows his stuff! ;)
-
why not ask fiiola when he's on facebook tonight?
-
Dave Harvey certainly does know his stuff. He was the first bloke to invest in BMX as a sport in Cornwall, not just in terms of money but in massive amounts of time too. Whenever I had a spare quid or three I would talk my parents into taking us down there as it was only 15 miles away from where we come from in Redruth and his shop was a true Aladdin's Cave. The last frame I got from him was a used Kona mtb about four years ago just before he sold up the shop in PZ and he was still the same straight-talking bloke he'd always been.
I wouldn't be surprised if what he said was true as Dave's links within off road sport go back way beyond BMX. He'd been a champion MX-er in the seventies (and is again now in the classic twin shock class) and was really trusted by those in the industry. Graham Merry used to flow stuff to him way earlier than to many of the bigger shops so we saw stuff from VDC, Hyper, LRP and so on as early as anyone in the UK, even though Cornwall was a small player in the larger British BMX scene. I don't think he'd really have any reason to tell you a tall tale as there'd be no point in it - that stuff is old history now, why make it up?
~ Craig
-
fiola never had a sig frame ??? ??? so does anyone know why he never got one??
Depends if you just refuse to believe to truth or not.
Doesn't sound like bull to me, that bloke sounds like he knows his stuff! ;)
Is it impossible for you to believe any other people might know their stuff?
why not ask fiiola when he's on facebook tonight?
Whatever he says at the end of the day the decision would not have been his. Richard Long would NEVER had done a Fiola (or any other) frame. It would not even be something that would have been dared mentioned. If something had been attempted behind his back I would have seen or at least heard of it brewing.
I don't think he'd really have any reason to tell you a tall tale as there'd be no point in it - that stuff is old history now, why make it up?
There seems to be no possibility that I am not making it up? Why is that?
The guy may have believed this to be true, I don't doubt he was told stuff like this, but it simply is not!
-

JT Racing is 6ft5" of solid fighting muscle thats diciplined in every martial art going !!!!!!
Well not really but he gives that perception :LolLolLolLol:
-
I dont care at all if GT were going to bring out a banana man frame, but if I was going to listen to anyone about what was going on at GT in the 80s, it'd be Username, for sure :daumenhoch:
-
username 1 Jt Racing nil
-
sounded like a good story down the pub, in perfectly innocent surroundings...
why's everyone getting so uptight... :D
anyone for a bit of gay dancing?

we need to hook up and get pissed,
flip some pub tables and shit,

I have been enlightened, we are in the presence of great knowledge and handlebar design.......

Id be very curious to know why you are so certain its not true. i suppose GT did do things
back then without consulting you didn't they?? ?
-
Errrr No? ??? Anyway... what's your background with GT then Username?.... :)
Is it impossible for you to believe any other people might know their stuff?
-
bloody hell.. get in the know people. username, and i won't name him, was in the worst ad ever made by GT Dyno, lying on his back on a numberplate.
as alex says, if anyone knows, he knows.. GT and signature frames wouldn't have been right methinks!
-
OK.. certainly a GT expert then. Anyone got a pic of that advert? :)
-
Are we talking about this or a stillborn idea? ???

If you dont know who username is you cant ever of read a copy of bmxaction :2funny:
-
look at me.
-
I know that I have a one off skatepark bike (1-3/8 rims). I did have a signature model. It was just a Pro Performer that had my signature sticker on it. The RARE thing is the STICKER . I have two of them.
Later
Eddie Fiola
-
-
I wish it was Eddie.

no,
you'd explode.

If you dont know who username is you cant ever of read a copy of bmxaction :2funny:
Steady there, "BMX ActionBike" was the UK magazine that had Username all over it.
"BMX Action" was the USA mag, Im not sure if Username was ever in that.
-
so i suppose username IS THE eddie fiola, or his twin bro'.....
-
(http://www.23mag.com/mags/bab/bab8502.jpg)
Dave Curry, get with the program fella's
-
dotn know what the big secret is.
some bloke who's been involved in bmx's at sometime in his life, who has an apparently informed opinion, who people wont name...
i was hoping it might be kaiser soze
-
Ah, at least use a photo of him on a GT!

::) yawn
-
I love industry movers and shakers. :LolLolLolLol:
-
i still dont understand how he can be so certain of the daily commercial workings
of GT BITD?? there must have been decisions made that dave wasn't privy to ::)
I run my own business and there is a lot that goes on that my staff are not aware of.
why would a team rider be told about business dealing that involve other riders?
and as the advert shows maybe he's not that clued up :)
the reason for starting this thread was to find out if such a bike existed and it clearing did!
i think the one we were talking about in the pub may never had gone into production but from reading the advert
it shows there WAS plans!!
-
Eddie does have a prototype 1 off performer still that was designed specifically for him to ride parks...weather this was a proto for a fiola bike etc who knows
I am a BMX Authority!
I know everything!
I am BMX!
You know nothing!
Bow down in my BMX presence.

I remember Dave Curry from the old magazines and Action Zone and all that. I think I even coloured in some of my bike parts using those paint markers cos of an article he did in Action Bike.
But why would Dave know everything about what was going on at GT in the 80's? Did he work for GT over in America?
-
He just knows stuff
-
Lets face it....Dave Currie isnt Eddie Fiola. Not being disrespectful to Dave. Eddie WAS the man at GT for freestyle. FACT!
At the end of the day i am sure Eddie had alot of influence over decisions made.
I was led to believe that he helped design the Performer by introducing the bend in the down tube and also the idea of using thicker tubing to get more grip on.
From a commercial point of view i think that it was an opportunity lost that they didnt create a Fiola bike. :P
-
Maybe he had a trans-Inter-continental-bmx-transmitter implanted in Fiola's and Gary Turners Head to keep abreast of business operations.
-
From a commercial point of view i think that it was an opportunity lost that they didnt create a Fiola bike. :P
According to that ad a few pages up, they did create a Fiola bike.
-
But why would Dave know everything about what was going on at GT in the 80's? Did he work for GT over in America?
Yes :daumenhoch:
(As far as I knew, anyway)
-
From a commercial point of view i think that it was an opportunity lost that they didnt create a Fiola bike. :P
According to that ad a few pages up, they did create a Fiola bike.
Yes but it was known as a World Tour. Not Eddie Fiola World Tour. Only the adds showed Eddie Fiola World Tour.
Basically this is what the guy may have been on about. For Gods sake it is over 20 years ago! :)
-
Fiola is doing an interview for RAD so I have just emailed him and asked I'll keep you posted. :daumenhoch:
I don't discount wether there was or wasn't and aint really bothered either way :D
-
chaps ..cmon no need for personal insults play the game..
-
Keep up Dan, that's the way this place works now. If you have an opinion that differs from a certain element then it's time to get flamed and abused. :LolLolLolLol:
-
Could you please ask him if he ran a single piece crank on the 'other bike' he didnt use at KOS 84. Apparently he told a bloke over on the museum through myspace that he did. Takagi apparently. ??? Would love to hear it from the horses mouth otherwise ive gotta buy some 2nd gen profiles. :D
-
infact can you remove your own posts if they are insulting to other members or youll be in detention :police:
flame yes zippy personally insulting NO half the reason i locked the other thread.
-
Eddies reading the thread! ;D
-
Made me laugh, in a freestyle way :D
-
thats cos we is rad.... :daumenhoch:
-
yes it was eddie i was emailing him on face book and told him about this subject and gave him the link for it
-
are you the guy on the museum that pm me about this?
username = b_koenig
-
i agree sometimes you lot take the mick out of each other and say stuff ,names even sexual innuendos
for a laugh do as you may to apoint but not to people you dont know even if you dont agree with what they say..
-
:daumenhoch: you can argue jt that will always happen , it was just the personal bit i was concerned about nowt else.
-

Sweet :D loving the way this thread is panning out ::) ;D

-
Fook me get with the program you lot :
Username is Dave Curry, Eddie Fiola is Eddie Fiola :daumenhoch:Dan, i sort of agree, but if i read this back...username was the person getting a bit shirty with what other people were saying, in response to his statements, like he was right, end off, and we all just had to accept it.
that prompted comments from some as why that would be the case.
???
anyway, my concience is clear...i've apologised for my innapropriate reference to bumming :daumenhoch:
What is it with you and bumming, every thread you ever post on ends up with you talking about bumming, gay sex ect, that was Eddie Fiola who signed up and one of the first things he see`s is someone accusing him of having gay sex, just what is your problem, do you want to be a part of this bmx comunity or not ? :police:
-
You have to admit it's as funny as fook that one of most people all time bmx heroes joins up is instantly accused of dry bumming an english nobody and then never comes back.
Keep up the good work guy's, it could only happen on the good ship rad. :2funny: :2funny: :2funny: :2funny:
-
its an embarrassment .

J.T you really are a grade A twat mate.
Dave was a massive influence in BMX in this country and stateside where he rode/worked for GT for some considerable time. Do you remember Action Zone from the mid 80's at all?
That was Daves company, somebody who actually done something for BMX in its fledgling years. What did you do for BMX?
Sean. :daumenhoch:
-
its an embarrassment .
Correct, its sad as fcuk.

Well JT seeing as you don`t feel the need to remove your posts as requested by Dan Harris then I`m going to do it for you, and you can have a 7 day ban to decide whether this is the right forum for you :police:

Eddie.... It's great to have you on board mate, think its amazing that one of my bmx idols is actually part of this site :D And its also great to hear that the signature model actually existed.
I'm sure everyone on Radbmx will welcome you to this site.

one of the oddest most bizarre and random threads i've ever read on RAD,
you need a classic thread section for these pearls bill,
we are all quite mad.

can blokes take evening primrose ?

Those decals did in fact exist for the Eddie Fiola signature models, check this thread on OS BMX.
http://www.os-bmx.com/forums/index.php'showtopic=32779&st=0
Flick through the pages, see Fiola himself and the GT that was built and all the NOS parts used to build the bike including those decals.

-
Good find that Matt :daumenhoch: i think we have a conclusion
-
can blokes take evening primrose ?
blokes - no
Wardy - yes
so let me just get this right.
Dwain dibbly chatted to some bloke over a beer, there might have been a couple of proto EF Gt frames
then the whole thread snowballs, an ex GT rider by the name of "username" and the legend EF himself sign up to RAd
obviously dry bumming get's mentioned somewhere inappropriate
and we end up where we are now with one of the most bizarre threads ever, still it is essential reading it would seem.
and after all that the thing that made a GT world tour and Eddie Fiola Signature World Tour was a sticker...which is rare.
wicked. :LolLolLolLol: :LolLolLolLol: :LolLolLolLol: :LolLolLolLol: :LolLolLolLol: :LolLolLolLol: :LolLolLolLol:
and was it really EF? how will we know?

I am sure he didnt find it offensive what J.T said. You dont have to have half a brain to realise that if you read through it! It was just a bit of fun. Besides if he found it offensive then surely he would have said. :-\
Anyway, as i said, i think that it is brill news for Rad if Eddie has joined this site. :4_17_5:

However, Eddie, if you are reading, you are a total legend, everyone on here loves you, hope you don't mind some british banter, we're all queers here! You inspired so many of us with your flying banana antics on the Kelloggs. Please stick around, you'll have some laughs for sure!

Welcome Eddie! Here's a pic a friend (chris fowler) sent me a while back on myspace...he's got the pudding bowl on the right. It's from a visit to a shop called Dragon Wheels in Cardiff (Wales) in '85 before the World Tour show in Methyr Tydfil. Happy days.... :daumenhoch:

I had the pleasure of meeting Eddie, Dave Breed and Mike Dominguez back in 85 at Livi Skatepark. He was a genuinely nice bloke from what I remember and even managed to get a signed vid which I still have to this day. I have watch it a kajillion times over the years. You could say my Vanderspek rep was also inspired by Eddie in a strange way.
anyway, heres my bit of memorabilia. welcome to RAD Eddie you still rock in my book!

Chris, these guys are a bunch of jokers sometimes so it wouldn't be unheard of for someone to register as a famous person (such as Edde) and post a comment, I think people thought it might be a 'wind up' so tell Eddie we would be honoured for him to hang out here now we know it's legit, as you can see he has a ton of fans here!
-
cheers gossa i no people log on with other names just trying to clear mine ? as i sent him the link
-
Dave, it's all in the first comment
The bloke was talking out of his arse! :idiot2: :uglystupid2:
Fair do's mate you know your stuff but instead of coming straight in on the attack maybe you could have posted in your wisdom and put your opinion over a bit better.
Otherwise it just looks like you're giving it the big 'un and people here like nothing more than giving it some of that.
-
whos talking out there arse??????/

lol, you would have to start on page one chris, but i'm pretty sure it's not worth it. :D

Chris you might want to go back and re-read the thread.

Arses, bumming, god what do we all sound like!
Chris, don't read ten pages mate, Eddie is a legend and very welcome (and admired) here, thank you for bringing him over.
Dave Currie is also a legend and some comments get taken the wrong way so let's all bum each other, er, i mean kiss and get along......
Come one Eddie, I know 'what happens on tour stays on tour' but tell us some stories!!!!

You might like reading nonsensical drivel but I do not.
I can't expect you to spot where sweetbeats edited his post but at first he didn't answer my question at all. It would have been better for me to just not respond to you but I come here to hang around and read a bit, what is your problem?
I post very little because it is obvious to me I do not fit in with the vibe here. Have you got some special privileges that allow to post such utter shite and allow you to discourage me from sarcastically asking a question about a failure to follow a basic thread and point out how oblivious to JAY's post the response was?
A lot of people have put the boot in here already, it seemed to me that the comment I originally quoted tonight was a reference to the two prototype Eddie Fiola frames from the 1st post.
If I followed your pathetic advice would I be permitted to return another day?
-
On a lighter note, note for ADMIN that is...
Eddie Fiola "Riding with Stabilisers"
Hardly... couldn't we upgrade him (at least to an air) as an honourary gesture even though his post count is low... ;D
I'm not sure Eddie realises the effect he had on thousands of British kids when he came over... I hated Freestyle (mostly because I was crap at it....) but that man mesmerised us when we saw him at Kelloggs.. I'd have gone out and bought a "Fiola Replica" if there had of been one...
-
Yeah I posted that earlier in the thread Jay turns out he has two  :coolsmiley:

Yes yes yes!!!!!!! Thanks Eddie. Was this on the other bike you had at KOS 1984? A guy over on bmxmuseum reckons he was there and that you had 2 bikes at the event. I didnt believe him until i saw the event on youtube where your bars fell forward. In the background you can see that you did have 2 bikes there. He mentioned you ran both profiles and a one piece on both. Im just happy that you have confirmed this.
Ive gotta put this up. I loved that bike at KOS 84 that i did my best to copy it. I sound like a starstruck kid!
Pleasure to have you here. :) :4_17_5: :4_17_5: :4_17_5:

Yes it was KOS 84 at the combi-pool,Upland round 3,if you look at his first run, thats his last air he does.
Thanks for the comments on the build i done, think it was 2005,could never get that seat at the time and a few other parts that i knew weren't correct, but got it close as possible at the time....
just noticed you have just noticed that air,yes about 3m30sec :daumenhoch:

Maybe they arent profiles. They look thick but i have just looked at my Takagi on that bike and thats quite fat too around that area. Maybe when you pause it on youtube it looks out of proportion.
Soooooooooo happy now i could crush a grape!

You need a copy of Freestylin,fall84,shows other pics of eddies chrome performer with blue tuffs, its a great looking bike aswell,it also runs a 1piece crank.Hope you don't mind me sayin ,but the front cable should run under the down tube aswell, its a weierd set up,but you can clearly see the way it runs better in the magazine,Ido know he ran the brake like that to improve performance as he could never get a good front brake(set up so the calipers run forward against the forks),but not sure why he ran the cable like that, the way you have it is the obvious way,but he didn't run it like that, maybe he can tell us.here's a pic of the bike i built, check the cable :daumenhoch:.........looks like you were correct on the post though, definetly looks black to me now,i don't have the pics from years go,but looked like a chrome post from pics a guy emailed yaers ago, don't remember who it was and i've lost all those pics now :'( :'( I also went for A'me grips as he was sponsered by them at hat time, but can't see the grips to be 100%..........hope this info helps........

username-like I said in an earlier post in the thread it is a forum based around bikes that where ridden by us as kids eons ago that we all have different views, thoughs and opinions on that we share on the forum.
For most people it's a fun place, good vibes and sometimes pretty funny too.
Unfortunately some people take both themselves and the kids bikes way too seriously and instead of adding to the good vibes of the community they start becoming egotistical, obnoxious and that causes a backlash.
By all means inform people and share your knowledge just try and have a little more tact and remember to have fun along the way. :daumenhoch:
-
Wicked JAY! :4_17_5: :4_17_5: :4_17_5: :4_17_5: :4_17_5:
I will change the cable now! ;D ;D ;D ;D How the fook did you notice that? I knew i had them on the right sides.
I was told about the seat and seat clamp being Shotgun and Cycle Pro respectivelty. You also told me it was a Shotgun seat.
He was also sponsered by Oakley and i was told over on the museum that the bike had Oakleys. There is a Q and A that Eddie did somewhere and he mentioned Oakley as his sponser too, although the AME hat he wears in a pic on this thread also indicates AME sponsered him. He will tell us i hope. Would he REALLY remember though?
I guess the whole BMX World bitd wanted to sponser him! On the footage you can sort of see they were oakleys too as they have a round inner circle on the ends.
Seat post does look black too which is why i went for it.
Loved that bike of yours. That was my inspiration. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

It was either before or after the show at eldon square at kawasaki yup.

Personally I care not for people throwing their toys out of the pram. Everyone and his dog knows that I wasn't a rider BITD and that I've only come into this sport and collecting hobby recently. But even I know how important Eddie Fiola is to people on here. I would not want to see Eddie (a busy man, no doubt) passing us by due to anyone engaging his mouth before his brain and getting the whole of RAD in :10_2_12:
Many of you no doubt will be gagging for 'old stories', which I despite my 'inexperience' will also be interested to read.
I will echo many others in saying welcome to Eddie :daumenhoch:

I think the chrome yellow tuffed bike in the Kawasaki pic is dave youngs, very nice looking bike.
Yeah Dave's performer was cool as BITD...Think kawasaki where his co-sponsor not so sure so don't quote me.
-
The performer was just as influential as the Gen 1 in terms of taking a freestlye bike to the next level. They actually thought about it. The most UNDERATED bike that there is in old skool bmx.
However i didnt like the Performer from 86 onwards though. Just my opinion. :-X Although these are the most sought after in the US.
-
Really Iconic they are and look cool in so many different colour combos,Think the later ones are really extra like the neon blue and pink stickers etc and look a bit gaudy and daft.prefer the early ones nice and simple and understated.
You know the candy red one with black tuffs is that 85? or later?
-
85 i think. poss 86.
-
Cool I like that one as well...when did the performer go all weird was in 87? Where the geometry is all over the top etc not struck on them.
-
I do like that candy red one too. I just didnt like the mags and colours that they introduced. Then they changed the geomatory.
-
Alrite i couldnt let this go on much longer with out showin my old 84er, i have another US chrome one that is in the development stage
