Title: Spines!
Post by: Bushwacked on February 19, 2009, 08:49 AM
Dead keen to get my ass over a spine (successfully).

Can do the Volcano at Corby reasonably well now but still not getting as much air over it as I would like.

What do I need to focus on to progress from this to doing spines comfortably?

yeah Barnaby, two minis with a spin between but a volcano to one edge if that makes sense.

Pickle: i'm some way off considering a spine, today I'm hoping to peg stall or grind one though, you have to get it right as there's no where to put your foot down. lol.

i hate spines tbh had a few bad runs on them in the past so have given up i cant say they really hinder my riding to much tho as my heart belongs to the flat banks/driveways :LolLolLolLol:

fooking love a spine me, can't get enough.

For me, the only way over them to start with is straight over to flat on the other side, that's the mental barrier of getting over it done, then you can work on your technique.

Jumped my first spine in '92 at leigh-on-sea, straight to flat, bars slipped the works

Evamedia - nice one - my big thing is getting over and wanting to be as close as I can to the coping coming down the backside but just going for flat could be the way forward!!! Just need a small one to try it on...

... hold on there is a 2ft Spine near my house!!! BONUS!

2 Fukin foot!  ;D

Thats not a spine, thats a crease for fuks sake.
It will do you no good learning on that bro, its not preparing you for a real mans spine in any way.  :-\

3 and a half to 4 is ideal for learning on.

just my 2 bobs worth like  :daumenhoch:

I love spines, bigger the better, more air time!If you have never done one it can be pretty scary at first. Its nothing like the volcano at Corby, that you can just ride over.If you try to just ride over a decent size spine your gonna ditch it.Is there a spine at creation? If so bushwacked its spine o clock lol
Title: Re: Spines!
Post by: Bushwacked on February 21, 2009, 09:17 AM
Yeah - theres a spine and a big (compared to Corby) volcano with a narrow top and an even bigger volcano.

spines are awesome, but scary, no time for daydreaming

and need such a different technique to how we used to ride bitd

watch MrAtkins on a spine, bonkers

and if you can get the hang of pulling your feet up and tuicking a bit its cool.

I find carving them very very difficult (ie I cant do it...)

Right guys - I'm after your encouragement to get over a spine on my own.

Went down to my local park wiht a spine on Monday for an hour - it has a 3.5ft spine

I was building up to it by rolling up to it and popping the front wheel above coping then stopping by putting my foot down. I was doing really well and felt on it until my foot slipped and I landed the other side to flat on my back -

Don't know why I can get my ass over it. Evamedia said just jump to flat but I've got it in my mind that something will go wrong and am bottling it.

What are your thoughts on it? What should I do? Am I worrying about nothing?
Title: Re: Spines!
Post by: Voodoocars on March 04, 2009, 08:21 PM
Practice on a jump box by jumping up and landing on your front wheel about 8" from coping-this is the technique needed. Just roll up a spine and duck the front wheel by leaning forward then lean back so the bike tucks in to your arse. Its only a bit daunting 'cause of the drop the other side.Do it once and you will wonder what all the fuss was about... he says....

Jump it to flat, it's 3.5ft

its 3ft and therefore dont count!
next week we'll go barhill then man up and ride it.

I've been rad this afternoon - not quite to the power of sick but I almost got some old granny pregnant who was giving me grief for using the park during school hours!!! (She said - "are you supposed to be here" I replied "Yes", not much she could say to that  ;D )

On a right buzz - Finally got my ass over the spine which apparently can't be classed as a spine - although its grown overnight and is now nearer 5ft ->

 :D  :D

Spent 30 mins doing a volcano and getting a feel for it, then went down to the park with the spine and pulled it first time!!!  ROCK ON!!! :daumenhoch:

Did a few starting from flat, then from the flatbank then from the qtr - qtr was a bit sketchy to say the least but I was properly beaming once I'd done it. had a few nose wheelie landings but no offs, so a good day all in all!!!!

Cheers to everyone for the advice - especially the constructive comments. I think a combination of Evamedia's "Its 3.5ft" comment and Jedi and Sean2000's taunting that it isn't really a spine, really sealed it for me.

Onwards and upwards!!!

I get this too... people just don't understand it. Why is having fun = having midlife crisis!!!

Don't know about you but since getting into BMX at my ripe old / young age (depending on how you look at it) I feel a sort of "yeah this is what its about!!" kinda feeling.

Got my ass over the spine at Skaterham on Saturday, 5 footer. Not been over a spine in nearly a year. Was having loads of grief with the volcano at Creation, ask JT71 nearly ran him over. Was at skaterham for 2 1/2 hours before I went over.  Was rolling up to judge speed, even small air aerials. Did what someone else said earlier and was popping out onto the deck nose first. Eventually with 1/2 hour to go just rolled in and straight over it, popped out on the deck and was cheering myself, no other fooker was watching, so had to do it again and again. In the last 1/2 hour I must have gone over about 20 times, even managed over the spine, tyre tap and back over the spine. Also managed a 340 and rode away on the jump box, still cant clear it.
