Title: tyres - how much difference do they make
Post by: JT71 on April 15, 2009, 08:04 AM
okay, now I've always been a bit sceptical as to how much difference the weight/construction of a tyre could make.

I have been running the super grippy cheng shin double V with kevlar bead, cheap as chips from Spasda, but since they had started to look a bit worn on the left side I decided it was time for a change.

I got the Revenge Industries fatty (perfect for me in more than one way, lol) front & pinner rear combo with kevlar bead (thanks again to Stodgy  :-* )

Swapped em over, pumped em to the same pressure 90psi and off I went to Corby.

First thoughts as I lay in the bottom of the bowl were "ooops didn't scrub that front in enough" so that sort of shot my confidence, anyway got up went out sdie and scrubbed the front a bit more on the concrete and tried again.

Not really tested the grip yet as I wasn't really trusting the tyres, my own fault, but I noticed straight away if I pumped my usual pump to get my pegs on I was way too fast.

Anyone else noticed this extreme difference simply by swapping tyres? My bike actually feels lighter and a touch more responsive and is definitely faster rolling.

it's an age old tried and tested trick that lighter tyres = lighter rolling weight thus a more responsive ride.  been doing it in the MTB world for years.  although they go one step further by making feather lite wheels and tubeless tyres  :daumenhoch:

tut tut though for not scrubbing them in........i'd never do something as silly as that  ;)

I didnt find that with my khes. They needed scrubbing. My mates did also. The difference from maxis miracles was amazing and I cant ever see myself putting slower tires back on.

My khe's needed scrubbing in, changed the rear not long back and forgot.... down ya go...  :-[

Great tyres though...  :daumenhoch:

Everytime the subject of 'making my bike lighter' comes up i always say, light wheels/tyres...  :daumenhoch:

tyre pressures can make a crapola tyre 2 different rides   get the pressure just right on a cheapish tyre it will out perform a good one pressured wrong.
just like brakes rearly

im runing fly rubens front and rear and they are evil tyres from the go fast/light and dont need to run very high pressures to roll well so saves on the wrists
will definatley be replacing with the same model
other than that i ued to run a v monster on front and a dirt monster on rear and that was prety sweet.

Got Fit FAF aswell, mega fast but if it rains don't brake suddenly! I ended up in a bush. lol
Dont think their gonna last too long, yank the brakes on and it tears them to shreds!

I am running Shadow Undertakers, and chuffed i am with them.  Talking of rubber i remember putting Mongoose skinwalls on me Team Murray 28 yrs ago and that transformed that 2.    :4_17_5:

Glad you asked, I've been wondering what a whip is (or why a bike is called one) for a few days now.

Whats scrubbing in?

if you don't know what that is, you don't deserve to know.

all tyres are different, running fatter tyres will make your bike slower. having 80psi in a 2.25 tyre wont make it feel like 80psi in a 1.75 tyre.

brian castillo always used to run 2 x 1.75's because it made his bike quicker. i still prefer a fatter tyre up front for a bit of sidewall flex and a more gradual loss of grip, as opposed to the sudden breakaway of a skinnier tyre.

We The People "feelin" s for me.

Hardly any scrubbing in required.
And yes they did make a big difference, the first time i hit the volcano i went about a foot higher than normal.............which was nice!  :daumenhoch:
